I'll be staying in the lodge for the end of my trip but the restaurant is good. Country store has all your gear and poughy bait, ice and fire wood. There's zip lining on site and watching a group go it's really fun. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Compared to some of the national parks I've visited, this is much nicer. Really glad I can't up here for the week to unwind.

This hampered our enjoyment considerably because it was difficult planning our days to research the area for things to do. We had to make 2-3 daily trips to the office to connect to WiFi. If I parked even 100' away from the office there was no service. And don't expect GPS accuracy. We often went into town about 8 miles away, but we were detoured a few times in the wrong direction trying to make our way back to the park - not the parks fault. If you have a mobile router, you will be fine and be able to enjoy all that Lookout Mountain has to offer.

We were not sure what they were until we read the informational historic signs about the park. There are picnic tables and parking, a restroom but no grills for the picnic.. History: The Chickamauga coke ovens are located just north of downtown Chickamauga on Highway 341. The beehive ovens of the Durham Iron and Coal Company were designed to turn coal into coke for use in the Iron and Steel Foundries in nearby Chattanooga Tennessee. The coal was shipped by train from the Durham coal mines on nearby Lookout Mountain on a winding, precarious railroad constructed around 1891. Train hauling coal to Chickamauga Coke Ovens Two trips a day were made by the trains delivering the coal to be burned at high temperatures without any oxygen present to remove the impurities from the coal. The remaining product was called Coke which burns hotter, longer, and steadier than coal and was what foundries needed to make steel and iron. By 1904, the mines were producing 700 to 1000 tonCoke ovens in Chickamauga Georgias of coal per day. About 1/5 of the production was manufactured into coke. The coke ovens operated until the Depression years when the seam of coal ran out. The railroad was abandoned in 1951. In the late 1990's, the coke oven area was reclaimed and restored to its original appearance with train cars and the actual beehive ovens. Wetland demonstration ponds were added and the area cleared to present a quiet, relaxing park like atmosphere. Each year in September the Ovens are transformed into an Arts and Crafts Festival, held in conjunction with the "War Between the States Day". For more information on either event click HERE. Plans are ongoing to create a bird sanctuary and nature trail near the coke ovens which are open daily. Parking and admission are free.

It is built on the hill and the entry is at the top and there is a secondary entry at the bottom. There is a bench and a picnic table down the hill under the tree to sit on but other than that? There is a water spigot and a poop bag dispenser and the place does not seem to have a lot of biological landmines, which is always a plus. There is plenty of parking at the top of the dog park. And there are some old growth trees. But mostly there's just room for your dog to run and a few agility items for their enjoyment!

I occasionally afford myself the luxury of visiting places without really knowing what to expect…read more This park just wasn't that clear to me in its purpose, but it became more so after arrival, with a visitor center focused on Native American history and identifying this as a Cherokee Nation headquarters. A spread of recreated buildings outside offers opportunities for perusal. The most aesthetically distinctive site is a large spring of the sort that seem more common in Kentucky than Tennessee, which evinces a robust blue color and empties into a clear stream. The spring itself is off-limits, but the stream is open for wading. All of these sites are within sight of the initial entrance, but a trek uphill reveals picnic areas, an amphitheater, and a couple of mile trail through the woods. Between the different elements of the park, it was easy to spend a couple of hours there, and best of all, it's free, though the gift shop warrants examination.

Red Clay is not the type of state park that I would normally seek out. Why? It's not in the…read moremountains and the trails are tame. Nonetheless, something about it lured me in for a visit and I'm glad I ventured out here (on Indigenous People's Day coincidentally). Historically, it's really interesting that this was the last meeting site for the Cherokee tribe's council. The signs claim it is "where the Trail of Tears really began." I was really intrigued by the natural Spring called "the Blue Hole." I've never seen a spring that appears bright blue in a forest setting. Seeing this cool natural sight was pretty awesome. Also, I could just imagine the Cherokee using this spring water and being here hundreds of years before. Trail wise: Pretty flat and easy trails. It's not very challenging. But, it makes up for it because it's a calm place with beautiful forest. I loved walking around. Also, since this is small and off the beaten path, it's not crowded at all. Overall: highly recommended. Worth a visit!

Amazing trails, hiking, bring your own kayak or boat, great wildlife. There is a small fee for the day I believe it's $5.00 it's alcohol free park and there's always plenty of Park Rangers there that are very nice and very helpful.

I came to Sloppy Floyd State Park expecting a peaceful day of scenic views, childhood nostalgia,…read morefamily memories, and wholesome outdoor recreation. What I got was all of that plus a biological weapons incident in the men's restroom. The hike up the wooded hill was lovely. Trees? Beautiful. Scenery? Gorgeous. Birds? Probably having a fantastic day. I made my way inside the facilities, and within approximately three seconds my eyes began watering and my nose started filing a formal complaint. The combination of B.O. and B.M. was so powerful that I'm fairly certain the air itself had become a solid. Thankfully, the bathroom was actually pretty decent once I got past the atmospheric conditions. The stall was mostly clean. There was plenty of toilet paper. The toilet itself performed admirably. The real problem is that there appears to be zero ventilation whatsoever. Whatever smells previous visitors leave behind simply remain there, marinating beneath the fluorescent lights like some kind of Appalachian sourdough starter. And here's the kicker, I walked back outside, inhaled deeply, and thought I was finally safe. Then the wind changed direction. The exact same smell came floating through the trees and followed me back down the trail. Despite this, I still love the park. It's beautiful, nostalgic, and a great place for families. The kids were playing, the scenery was peaceful, and the whole place reminded me of childhood weekends spent outdoors. I just have one modest suggestion for park management: Please install a plug-in air freshener or two.
