On the spur of the moment we decided to go away for a weekend and chose West Wales. I wanted to stay in a relaxed pub where we could have good pub food, proper beer and use it as a base to explore the West Wales coast. The last thing I wanted was formality.
I remembered (from living in Wales 25 years ago) that Nevern was a beautiful village and that it had a pub called the Trewern Arms so we phoned and managed to get a family room for £95 including breakfast.
The Trewern hasn't changed much in 25 years (last time I visited), it is set in the beautiful secluded village of Nevern a couple of miles from the beach. The accommodation is dated but it is spotlessly clean, quiet and comfortable with great service. We stayed on a bank holiday weekend in a family room (one room but with two separate sleeping areas) there was no shower but loads of hot water, fresh towels and cable tv and free wireless access.
The breakfasts were fantastic, all freshly cooked with great ingredients and we all looked forward to them. We ate off the bar menu and again the food was great (perfectly cooked steaks) and home made.
Went running in the morning in the beautiful countryside and after a day out we sat and read the papers, the boys played pool and explored the village and we all generally relaxed. We stayed 3 nights, had two evening meals and all our drinks and the bill was £430 which was exceptional value for a great family weekend.
So it might be a bit dated but in some ways that was its charm and it makes up for these shortcomings by being extremely well run and we achieved our objective of a relaxed family break and we all agreed that we would return. read more
