Since then, I moved away and came back, and came here again yesterday. They're still excellent! Dr. Appy addressed all my questions about my odd couple of eye conditions. They still had my records from 2006. He knew all about epithelial basement-cell-membrane corneal dystrophy (where the outer layer of the cornea bunches up), and was able to advise me on where to get the right stuff to keep it from flaring up. He also explained how the ointment works--something my previous eye doctors never had time for. Then I sat down with Jeff in the front room to see about getting new frames and lenses. He said, "I'm not a salesman." He was just there to advise me. And sure enough, we found that he was able to adjust both of my last two pairs of glasses so that I had really good acuity--no need for new lenses! No pressure to buy anything, just helpful advice and service. Everyone here was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to.

Then she left a message saying she can't send my glasses off till she gets the full amount, and she said she did all the math wrong. So I had to pay a lot more money. Not cool. I'm definitely going to Costco next time. I do like the doctors they're good.

In another practice, Dr. Gibb is amazing as well, but he is retired now. My Cataract surgeries were a total success last year with the amazingly calm and most professional Dr. Mizoguchi preforming them at Mad River Hospital. With Medicare and Partnership Medical Taxi got me there and back home. Now I can see the TV, the computer print, normal sized print and most restaurant menus without glasses. I can see to drive as well, but DMV small print on the eye test says I need to wear glasses. I did get glasses at Six Rivers Optical (Medicare reimbursed about $120), for small print and to see small street signs in advance. There is a shortage of Ophthalmologists up here. If you are fortunate enough to get an appointment with Dr. Mizoguchi, I highly recommend him. Besides being very nice, he explains everything in layman's terms. Years ago, I was diagnosed with macular degeneration in the dry stage. Keeping it at bay with eye vitamins (Ocuvite plus extra C, plant-based E, melatonin, a variety of organic vegetables, Wild Caught Salmon, etc.) has kept it at bay for 10+ years. Dr. Mizoguchi was shocked to see a Macular Degeneration Drusenoid had shrunk as well. He showed me the blown-up picture showing that. I believe Acupuncture helped too, but we need more studies on this. As far as all these negative reviews, I have never heard of any of those Ophthalmologists at this Humboldt Medical Eye Associates practice. Perhaps I was not paying attention or maybe they have this practice mixed up with someplace else. Everyone has ALWAYS been kind, efficient, and knowledgeable with assistants and the office staff as well. Let's hope we get more Ophthalmologists up here, as Dr. Mizoguchi is taking care of 4 counties. This does not affect his ability to be an excellent surgeon, to be kind to everyone and to give each person the personal care they deserve.

I very much appreciated the excellent and thorough exam and education the Dr. does. I would offer…read moretwo small changes to ensure better patient experience. There is NO sign or any direction when you walk in WHERE the front desk is, just a very tall counter area, and a narrow divider wall, where a desk is. So check-in could be in two places. A sign would help. I asked the girl who does NOT greet me at all "Is this the check in area?" NO answer...just asks for my name. Period. Then hands me the forms and says "fill these out" I have to find a pen on my own, and she sits back at her desk..no other communication, and there was no other customer needing attention or a phone ringing. I just waited out in the lobby and did not return the clipboard...she did come and get it and apologized, not sure why. Greeting ANY patient, new or not, and giving YOUR own name prevents awkwardness of the patient having to say "Hey You" to her...which I had to do. The Dr. does not give his name either, no lab coat or name tag. He COULD have been a tech or some pre-exam staffer who checks your glasses, etc. as is typical in MD offices. So in both cases friendly Introductions are better. Humboldt is too casual in just about any social or business interaction, mostly because staff are never trained in etiquette. Wearing an MD's white coat is not necessary, but clearly saying a 'difficult' name helps the patient not be stuck just saying "Doctor".

I should've been told as soon as I got there that he was an hour behind but I was told it would be a "little bit of a wait" The doctor was amazing and so nice. After the appointment I had asked for my glasses to be tightened and she came out and told me that she broke my glasses and didn't have the color in stock. She could loan me a pair or tape up mine for 2 weeks while she ordered another. I settled for a different color. She said sorry but had a very rude tone. Love the doctor but wouldn't recommend this place. It's really unfortunate for Medi-Cal patients in the area.
