During the drive he would tell us interesting historical facts & stories. I do wish we'd had more time at each stop. The longest time we had was at Cape Spear, about 25 minutes. Hubby & I only had enough time to go up to the gift shop, take some pictures of the lighthouse & views. It would have been nice to get a chance to hike around some more. Also the van we were transported in fit 4 couples comfortably but it looked kind of worn. Some of the upholstery on the backs of the seats was fraying & the van smelled a bit musty. There was another tour group shadowing us & their bus looked much larger & newer so I was wishing we'd been in a nice bus like that. Other than that though, I would say the tour was enjoyable. The price of the tour was fair.

It rises above bronze figures of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, Royal Naval Reserve, Merchant Marine, and Forestry Corps. The monument is in Downtown St. John's and was an easy walk from our Hotel. It's located near the harbour where troops departed and returned from the war and it remains an important site of remembrance. Across the street you'll find a monument to the 2 iconic dog breeds named for this Province - Newfoundland and Labrador.

But as we rushed off to the airport 3 hours later, we were wishing we had more time to spend at this beautiful place, and talking about all the things we'd like to do there the next time we visit. We started our morning with a tour of the truly excellent Interpretation Centre, which is the perfect size to get a great overview without being overwhelmed. The information is presented in a very accessible way, and there are plenty of things to touch and buttons to push to keep children engaged. We were also provided with some additional information by a Manuels River facilitator, Madison, who was very knowledgeable and great with our kids. She also provided us with a map and directions to set us up for our hike. The trails are well marked and well groomed and perfect for families - we even brought our stroller along. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. But the highlight for me was searching for trilobite fossils in the shale beds - and actually finding (a small) one! Very unique experience, and my dinosaur-obsessed kids loved every moment.

The views along the coastline and out on the water were stunning, and we even made it all the way down to the beautiful Cape Spear. I have been planning this trip for several years, and to have the moment cheapened with reference to exactly what I was trying to escape about our sad, consumption-bound existence ruined what should have been a transcendent moment. For just…read more$55 (adult) for two days, you get driven from Downtown to all the key tourist destinations like Signal Hill, the Geo Centre, Quidi Vidi, The Rooms, and Cape Spear Lighthouse. You can hop on and hop off at any point. They make a stop at each of these locations each hour until around 3 pm each day (check their schedule on their site or grab a pamphlet at their booth). You'll find their first pickup stop right in front of the Alt Hotel and that's where you can also buy a ticket. We stumbled across them while walking by, initially considering Ubering to our destinations, but after comparing the prices, this seemed worthwhile. For reference, an Uber ride to Cape Spear from Downtown is $40 one way, so it seems like a no-brainer to use this service for a couple or small group, especially if you're not using a rental car. The driver also acts as a tour guide while driving across town, providing a bit of history. Coincidentally, Bobby was our driver both days; each time we hopped on, it was him, and he was friendly and added to the enjoyment of our ride to the destination.

Best of all, it's just a quick 2.5 km trip from the heart of downtown. This site holds immense global significance; it is the exact spot where Guglielmo Marconi received the first-ever transatlantic wireless signal in 1901, changing global communication forever. Another major highlight is the Noon Day Gun ceremony at 12 PM sharp. Hearing the cannon boom and learning how it served as a crucial time signal for mid-19th-century ships navigating across time zones is fascinating. Entry was free in Summer 2026 thanks to Canada Strong pass. Parking is always free. The top lot fills up fast, so get there early. In case it is already full, you may need to park below the hill in the overflow parking and walk 20 minutes to the summit. There are no toilets at the summit tower, but the small gift shop and the historical museum make it well worth a couple of hours of exploration!

There's a bus that goes up or you can drive. There's a large parking lot. There's an old tower on top that looks like a castle. Nearby are plaques about the hill's history. Then there are several trails to get different views of the area. I did the long one and it was worth it despite the many stairs.
