The town itself is over 200 years old but was documented to have inhabitants around 1598. This was even before the arrival of the Mayflower, making this one of the oldest European Settlement in North America. In 1992 the Canadian Government declared an moratorium restricting cod fishing in Newfoundland. For generations after generations cod fishing was the major income producer in the region. This was devestating for the local economy and especially for all the fisherman whom relay on the cod to survive. Today the fishing industry is still very important to the local residence of Peggy Harbour, but tourism is also becoming a very major factor in the survival of this small town. Peggy Harbor is now home to Airbnb's, hotels, wonderful seafood restaurants, cafes, bed & breakfast, mini aquarium, charters for whale watching and fishing, walking trails and even boast to have the longest zip-line in Canada ( North Atlantic Ziplines). Due to the picturesque beauty of the area , There has been many television series and movies filmed at this location too. Small town with so much history , Enjoy ! Live/Love/Travel !
