If you decide to drive the pot-hole laden, austere Irish loop all or part of the way, or simply out to Cape Spear the Mini Aquarium in Petty Harbour is worth a stop or small detour.
First of all, Petty Harbour has to be one of the largest and most picturesque towns in southern Newfoundland. You can actually find a bite to eat and some scenic photo spots here.
The Mini Aquarium is indeed a small place. As you come into Petty Harbour you will see its sign on the side of the building and have little trouble getting there. Inside there are two small rooms with about 20-25 tanks of various species of Newfoundland Marine life. Each room has a few tanks where you can "pet" various creatures such as star fish. Washrooms are available here as well.
The cost for an adult was 8-9$ (I can't remember exactly). This price was worth it to me, if in some small way to support this educational place. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and helpful with information.
I came rather indifferent to making the stop, yet left glad I did. read more
