The hotel had several buildings arranged intimately and irregularly on a plot of land tucked behind the main row of shops on High St. The facility had been refurbished to create a rather favorable impression. The short corridor leading through the entry from High St. provided anticipation of what was coming. The walkway fanned out to house a patio full of tables serving the bar and restaurant. The small lobby featuring the check-in desk set unobtrusively to the left. The car park was in the back and not easy to find when trying to navigate there. I was glad I did not have a vehicle. I was checked in on arrival by a very polite and friendly woman who assigned me a room in the back (Bewick) building. The nostalgic appearance of this lovely inn was well matched to my room, which featured pleasant décor. I was pleased to find that it was more spacious than the average European hotel room. It was clean and neat in appearance. The bathroom was also roomy with adequate space for maneuverability. The work area was also suitable for productive activity. The moderate-sized TV was mounted to the wall and featured extensive program offerings. The one downside was that the room did not have enough outlets. Given the age of the facility, this was unsurprising. The morning meal was housed on the second floor above the bar and restaurant. The room presented a relatively elegant atmosphere and the buffet offered a goodly number of choices. There were hot options including eggs, meats, beans, etc. There were also several cold choices including fruit, yogurt, breads, cold cuts, cheese, etc. The coffee was served in a small French Press and was relatively good. The service was more than adequate. The rates on this place were not bad considering the quality of the accommodations and the location. The average daily bed-and-breakfast room rate was 122.50 GBP. This was a worthwhile value in my estimation. Overall, this was a very positive hotel experience set against the backdrop of a charming town in Leicestershire. The facility were nice, the rooms were pleasant and the staff were polite and helpful. The breakfast offering was well conceived and the room rate was more than fair for the product they deliver. If you need a place to stay in the area, this is a great choice.

Failing that, there is a multistorey car park next to the hotel for which there is a discounted fee of £15 for hotel residents. It is a shame that the pool has been closed for a number of years, but I understand the reason as it primarily due to the running costs. All the staff I met were great. Slight problem was that my credit card hadn't been requested to add extgras, this was rectified later. I paid for a stocked minibar, it appeared to be chargeable to the room any items removed. It ws only just before checkout that I found that this wasn't the case. The signage in the fridge was confusing. Nevertheless a good size room and a comfortable bed. Although, my wife complained about the hard pillows.....I didn't find them to be a problem. I'm sure the hotel would have rectified them for my wife, if she had asked. I was recognised as a Diamond Elite member and breakfast was therefore included free of charge. The breakfast offerings were great, unfortunately, I didn't see the porridge in time and had cereal. Not the end of the world. Would I stay there again? Yes.

The parking is great, you can park your car in the secure car park and leave it there for your stay, the car park is shared by the bus station and shopping centre I believe. The room was good, can't fault it. I didn't have much of a view but it doesn't really matter. They offer smoking rooms which is a rarity these days, I had a smoking room myself and they are situated a long, long way down the corridors from non-smoking rooms. So if you want a smoking room, prepare yourself for a long walk. The staff were very polite on the desk and in the bar area. The receptionist had good knowledge of the local area and was able to help us get around. The breakfast was excellent, probably one of the best hotel buffet-style breakfasts I have ever had. If you stay here I highly recommend making sure you make it to breakfast.

The team there has made my stay very enjoyable, they look after everything - future room bookings, information around town, events, busy times etc. The hotel itself is new, modern and clean. The food in the restaurant is good (breakfast and evening meals). The location is great - close to restaurants and bars ss well as a good running track along the river. I would definitely recommend staying here if you need to be in Derby.
