I really, really like the Basecamp workout! I signed up for a 7-day trial, and all of the staff…read morewere so accommodating and easy to work with. Definitely a great start. I honestly did not like the workout my first 1 or 2 times -- I got a bit confused as to where I was going... but by the third visit I totally had it down (it truly is simple once you get a rep or two) and actually started to LOVE the workout. It's a high intensity heart-rate pretty much the whole 35 minutes with some weight work snuck in between minutes on the airdyne bike. It's a killer. In just 7 days I noticed my cardio abilities improving. There is a lot of weight/strength exercises during the workout, but I wouldn't say this is where you'd go to gain power strength and bulk up. More like muscular endurance while gaining some strength. You're done in 35 minutes, and you can choose to stay for 7 minutes ish of ab work and 3 minutes ish of stretching (and then you actually have time to stretch on your own in the studio without being pressured out for the next class... woot!). All of the coaches were great, too and fun to have as a workout guide. They do all kinds of fun recognition for members who hit certain milestones... while that's not totally my thing, it really did bring some comradery to a large group of strangers working out together. It's fun to be excited for somebody else! If I had to find a negative, it is that you absolutely DO NOT have sufficient time to transition from the bike to a weight station in most cases... and you're often running into other people running all over doing the same. I wish there was a more systematic transition... but I learned to get over it. All 7 days that I went during my free trial, not one single staff member tried to sell me on a membership or give some rehearsed pitch. Totally different than any other chain gym I've gone to and it was kind of a relief. I actually had to contact Basecamp to talk membership because after the 7 days, I really was interested (I did not start this trial intending to continue with a membership). This was at the very end of February when the mask mandate was expiring, and I'm just not ready to be in an indoor room with a large group of unmasked and only-maybe-vaccinated people breathing heavily for 45 minutes. If things go well for a few months, I'll totally join. If the masks coming off doesn't bother you... you definitely need to give Basecamp a try!

Everyone was so nice and encouraging, and even if you're new to working out they make everyone feel completely comfortable. It was really fun and effective I'll definitely be sore! The foot injury I came in with and had discussed with the trainers during my initial assessment has recovered very well. They designed a stretching program for me that helped tremendously. I can do cardio and high impact exercises again with no issues. Huge progress as I honestly thought my foot would never be the same again. Also, regarding my fitness goals, my goal was to build muscle and training sessions have been a nice mix of progressive strength training and conditioning. Workouts are always challenging, but doable, and leave you feeling like you exercised every single muscle group in your body. I now have muscle tone that was not there a year ago when I started. I feel stronger and can lift and squat weight that I never thought I would be able to. All the trainers are excellent. They are very knowledgeable, correct your form, and are very supportive, giving you the extra push you need whenever you feel you cannot possibly do another repetition or set. Also, I never cease to be amazed by Jake and his ability to detect muscle imbalances that may be causing difficulty with a certain exercise. If there is a certain exercise you cannot do, they will modify the exercise, and work to build up the weak muscles so you can eventually do the advanced version of the exercise with proper form. Orange Shoe is well worth the investment if you can manage it. I consider it an investment in my long-term health. I would recommend them 100% to anyone looking for some help with their health and fitness goals, whatever those may be, whether it's building muscle, losing weight, running a marathon, etc. They will design a program tailored to you and set achievable goals that will help keep you motivated.

I'll maybe get a pass instead to make sure it's not like what I just experienced.

New in Madison area and wanted to find a good studio to jumpstart. I've always preferred hot classes, Bikram style, like 105'F with 50%+ humidity. I'd love a good sweat and I found easier to relax and stretch in the heated environment. Learned there are 4 locations and Middleton was the one I attended. Initial impression was cute place with vibrant color. They offer showers and a waiting area to read/decompress with hot tea and filtered water. I signed up online and showed up for my 1st hot class. Parking wasn't hard and it was free. Walked upstairs and checked in at the counter. I saw members can get free towels; otherwise, it's $1 or $2 depending on the size. There were about 20 students in the class and I ended up towards the opposite side of the entrance which it isn't the best spot. I had a hard time hearing the instructor (no mic and loud music). Given it's my first class, I thought the instructor should ask who's there for the 1st time and if there were any injuries. No one asked so I just have to modify as needed due to my herniated spine. Given this is my 1st class in almost 2 years, I took it slowly and participated as much as I could which was still over 80% of the class time. I didn't sweat at all. The room was warm but definitely not hot or humid. My mat towel was dry which was different from all of my previous practices. I later found out the temperature was set to around 90'F and no one knows if a humidity level was turned on. I'm glad that I went as it was a good way to try out but I'll go back again to try a couple more classes before deciding if I want to be a member.

They have a special of 2 6-week sessions for $140 so it's a pretty good deal. This class definitely helps you be more comfortable in your own skin and become more confident. I could see that in myself and in a lot of the other women in the class. The studio itself is one big room with 8(?) poles evenly spaced from one another. The mirrors are a little wonky so sometimes is hard to see yourself. There are changing rooms before you walk into the big room and a bathroom on the very opposite side of the entrance. No outdoor shoes in side and you can be barefoot or in socks while in class. The 1 hour classes would start with check-in (which sometimes took longer than needed) and about 5-10 minutes of stretching. We would then go over what we learned the week before and learn 2-3 new spins and a sequence of lap/floor/chair moves and then the last 5 min or cleaning your pole and stretching. Our instructor Melissa was great. Really friendly, super knowledgeable about all the moves. 1 hour to practice and then remember was really difficult for me though. I felt like it was not enough time to really perfect the move and grasp the choreography. I'm a perfectionist and wanted to practice it until I got it down. We learned a routine on the last session but I feel like it would be fun to learn a routine at the end of the every class or do like a routine add on with each class so that you could keep re-practice the moves week by week. They do have open pole hour for you to come in and practice but they're right at 5 or 6pm. Right now during Covid-19, they are offering virtual donation-based classes which is great for those lap/chair moves! I'm excited to start Pole 2 and keep honing in my skills!

I had only done a college mat Pilates class and struggled a ton (but liked the challenge). It is really great that they require the intro class. Although the reformers are nicely spaced, but I still preferred a smaller crowd due to the Omicron situation. Everyone had to wear a mask properly while working out. The instructor wore one as she walked around the room. Nice work-out with clear instructions but any corrections. Sometimes I wonder if I was doing the pose correctly. I was glad to take another class but probably will wait out until the virus situation is more controlled. It wasn't easy to work out with a mask as it was hard to breathe (have mild asthma).
