I really, really like the Basecamp workout! I signed up for a 7-day trial, and all of the staff…read morewere so accommodating and easy to work with. Definitely a great start. I honestly did not like the workout my first 1 or 2 times -- I got a bit confused as to where I was going... but by the third visit I totally had it down (it truly is simple once you get a rep or two) and actually started to LOVE the workout. It's a high intensity heart-rate pretty much the whole 35 minutes with some weight work snuck in between minutes on the airdyne bike. It's a killer. In just 7 days I noticed my cardio abilities improving. There is a lot of weight/strength exercises during the workout, but I wouldn't say this is where you'd go to gain power strength and bulk up. More like muscular endurance while gaining some strength. You're done in 35 minutes, and you can choose to stay for 7 minutes ish of ab work and 3 minutes ish of stretching (and then you actually have time to stretch on your own in the studio without being pressured out for the next class... woot!). All of the coaches were great, too and fun to have as a workout guide. They do all kinds of fun recognition for members who hit certain milestones... while that's not totally my thing, it really did bring some comradery to a large group of strangers working out together. It's fun to be excited for somebody else! If I had to find a negative, it is that you absolutely DO NOT have sufficient time to transition from the bike to a weight station in most cases... and you're often running into other people running all over doing the same. I wish there was a more systematic transition... but I learned to get over it. All 7 days that I went during my free trial, not one single staff member tried to sell me on a membership or give some rehearsed pitch. Totally different than any other chain gym I've gone to and it was kind of a relief. I actually had to contact Basecamp to talk membership because after the 7 days, I really was interested (I did not start this trial intending to continue with a membership). This was at the very end of February when the mask mandate was expiring, and I'm just not ready to be in an indoor room with a large group of unmasked and only-maybe-vaccinated people breathing heavily for 45 minutes. If things go well for a few months, I'll totally join. If the masks coming off doesn't bother you... you definitely need to give Basecamp a try!

I went to my first class today taught by Amanda. If you're looking for an incredibly fun,…read morechallenging, and welcoming workout check this place out. Everyone was so nice and encouraging, and even if you're new to working out they make everyone feel completely comfortable. It was really fun and effective I'll definitely be sore! I can't wait to go to another class.

They have a special of 2 6-week sessions for $140 so it's a pretty good deal. This class definitely helps you be more comfortable in your own skin and become more confident. I could see that in myself and in a lot of the other women in the class. The studio itself is one big room with 8(?) poles evenly spaced from one another. The mirrors are a little wonky so sometimes is hard to see yourself. There are changing rooms before you walk into the big room and a bathroom on the very opposite side of the entrance. No outdoor shoes in side and you can be barefoot or in socks while in class. The 1 hour classes would start with check-in (which sometimes took longer than needed) and about 5-10 minutes of stretching. We would then go over what we learned the week before and learn 2-3 new spins and a sequence of lap/floor/chair moves and then the last 5 min or cleaning your pole and stretching. Our instructor Melissa was great. Really friendly, super knowledgeable about all the moves. 1 hour to practice and then remember was really difficult for me though. I felt like it was not enough time to really perfect the move and grasp the choreography. I'm a perfectionist and wanted to practice it until I got it down. We learned a routine on the last session but I feel like it would be fun to learn a routine at the end of the every class or do like a routine add on with each class so that you could keep re-practice the moves week by week. They do have open pole hour for you to come in and practice but they're right at 5 or 6pm. Right now during Covid-19, they are offering virtual donation-based classes which is great for those lap/chair moves! I'm excited to start Pole 2 and keep honing in my skills!

If you're interested in getting fit, losing weight, feeling better, and joining a community of…read morelike-minded individuals, then you need not go any further than TFW Madison. Although not "CrossFit", the TFW gym might be considered CrossFit-ish and their approach to training shares a lot of the same elements. Functional fitness. Nobody cares how much weight you can bench press through a very circumscribed 24" range of motion. Increased flexibility. Building strength through exercises designed to strengthen your core, supporting muscles, etc. No machines. Ropes, resistance bands, medicine balls, body-weight, kettle bells, dumb bells, and free weights. An open area used for stretching, interval training, and so on. There are at least 6 mentored workouts a day, 5 days a week (plus one Saturday morning). If you're the kind of person whose idea of a workout is jamming out to your iPod while you walk or jog on the treadmill for 30 minutes, followed by 30-40 minutes of weights, this is not your gym. But the truth is that I used to be one of those -- I liked going to the YMCA and sweating it out. The big weight room always seemed like a plus. But I didn't see nearly the results that I've seen in just a few weeks with TFW. As an added bonus, the owners, Jonathan and Jenny, are friendly and will help you stay accountable. Sometimes life can intrude and despite my best intentions I just didn't make it to my workout. Within 24 hours I've heard from Jonathan wanting to make sure I wasn't injured, or know whether everything was OK, and when was I coming back. At least a couple of times that's just what I needed to get me back on track and back on schedule. And it's hard to argue with the results. Down 13lbs in my first 3 weeks. Able to touch my toes without straining for the first time in probably years. Sleeping better. Excited for my next workout, instead of dreading it, even when I'm sore. Training designed to make you stronger, and more importantly, healthier.

I joined TFW in September 2017 after several years at some other local gyms. TFW has been a…read morefantastic experience for me physically, mentally, and spiritually. Prior to TFW, my experience with the whole gym scene in Madison was not positive. I went to the "gym" because I knew I needed to but frequently skipped days (I always gave myself excuses because I didn't really want to go). Even though I was going to the gym somewhat regularly, I continued to gain weight and my fitness level was not improving. When I started at TFW, I was very skeptical. All sorts of promises but...In the last year, I have dropped my fat (I am now roughly 20% bodyfat - I started close to 30%) and I have gotten a lot stronger. For example, I recently was able to do 305 pounds on the back squat - a year ago I was only able to squat 230 pounds and that wasn't even a full squat). More importantly, my mental attitude to life has changed. I have a deeper belief that I can fight through adversity and it shows in my training and in how I deal with challenges in life outside the gym. I enjoy going to TFW and really feel off when I miss a session. The coaches work with you to help you get better. They offer alternative movements that fit your individual needs (bad shoulder, bad knees, etc.) so you can grow and get better despite physical limitations. One big difference that I have experienced is that students also encourage and help each other in the gym and help with accountability. I recently missed a session because I was ill. I had 3 fellow students send me a note to make sure I was ok. It is a great community for personal growth. Check it out!
