I don't think I've ever done a review on a mechanic and honestly, I didn't think I ever would! But I'm taking a break from food reviews to share my experience at Tran's with anyone who cares. The owner is very honest. He could have easily told me that my car had 27 issues that popped up on his diagnostic run and urged me to repair all of them. Instead, he completely reset the light, told me my car was safe to drive for the next few days and to pop back in when the light came back on so that he could find the main issue and just fix that. Like who does that?? The guys that change my oil are always trying to get me to fix extra things but here at Tran's? Didn't happen. He even told me he didn't have time to deal with extras because he had so many cars in his yard to take care of, so he's only taking care of the main issue. The owner was extremely nice too. He didn't charge me for the diagnostic but told me what he believes is the issue and gave me an estimate on the spot. But of course, we won't know for sure until my light pops back up and he's able to dive deeper into my (car) problems. Would definitely recommend Tran's to anyone! read more

My car started doing some funky things, sounding weird, struggling to turn on, and then just shutting itself off randomly. My girlfriend recommended I take it to Mike at Tran's Auto. He was able to get me in right away, took a look at my engine for free and recommended first that we change out the battery (which was nearly a decade old!). Refused to take any money for the diagnostic. After we got a new battery in there, it was running again but still seemed a little off, so we took it back for a deeper look. He recommended an alternator replacement, and also pointed out that there were rats in my engine! He showed me under the hood where there were big piles of poop! He replaced the alternator and a belt, cleaned out the engine, showed me how to keep the rats from coming back, and got my car fixed and back to me in one day, and the final tab was less than he quoted for just the alternator! It's been running great ever since, we just took a long road trip and had zero issues. Mike is fantastic, no bullshit, just gets it done at a fair price. Would recommend to anyone. read more

Tran is the man! My car wasn't accelerating properly & when I was looking up auto shops in my neighborhood that could look at my car same day, Tran came to the rescue. Got my car back the next day, (a little over 24 hours) and the repair for leaking transmisión fluid was below the average price on google. Definitely found my new mechanic! read more

Mr. Tran performed an oil change. He checked and filled all fluids, filled the tires and diagnosed a few know issues with the car. His pricing is very very competitive. A nice honest mechanic with no pushy upselling. You can't beat that. read more

So i had to go do an oil change and i wanted to it somewhere i could walk around and check out the new sites. I choose this place out on belmont so i could walk around. I got a really good deal on my oil change. Especially because i'm so picky about what i put in my cars. While there i was talking to his other customers and they were very happy with his service and confident that if there is a problem he's the guy to fix it. good prices, competent mechanic and within walking distance of places to hang out and eat. this is a place for me. read more

My daughter took her car for a check engine light. They quoted her price to fix Air Fuel Ratio Sensor of $425.00 which seemed reasonable but they also wanted $250.00 for a DEQ set-up fee. I wanted clarification of what that was so my daughter asked them to give her a copy of the written estimate so she and I could look at it. They told her they are not a high tech shop so they don't provide that. We called other local shops to get confirmation of the DEQ set-up fee and they said there was no such thing, My daughter paid $45.00 to get car out of their shop and only received a hand written receipt after insisting. I have since tried to call to talk to shop but they hang up immediately. I will contact the Attorney General of Oregon to file a complaint as they will not try to resolve with us. read more

On Friday night, my alternator went out on my way home from work and Tran stayed after hours to wait for the tow truck, then he stayed even later waiting with me for my ride. I wish this site had a less than one star rating! Trans is the worst mechanic I have ever taken my car to. My car broke down last week and I had it towed to Trans shop because they had good reviews. He looked at my car and told me that there was one problem, then called me the next day saying he fixed that problem, but there was another problem. I never gave him permission to fix the first problem so I said well go ahead because you have already started. the third day he called me and said my engine was knocking, I did not bring it in with a knocking engine! He said I'm not working on this car anymore get it off my property or I will charge you $1000. I had it towed to another mechanic. Trans had dismantled the engine and left the parts in the front seat! The other mechanic could not ever diagnosis the problem because Trans did not put the car back the way it came to him and he has messed it up so bad that the other mechanic cant get the brand new battery to work or figure out what is wrong with it! Now I have to find a mechanic that will put it back together just to diagnosis it and fix it! I am beyond pissed! Terrible business! read more

I have known and dealt with Trans for over 20 years. Your first impression when you see the shop might be - "this place looks like a junkyard". Get past your first impression (come on, look at your desk), this is a good shop. I have sent many family members and freinds to him for years. He has worked on many different brands of cars for me and has always done a great job. The truth is he seems like family now. I ONLY recommend him. He is honest and fair. Tran's does not give "service with a smile". Tran might think you are dumb (and when it comes to fixing cars, I am). But Tran will only fix the things that need fixing, will do it at a very reasonable price, and will do it right. If you want service with a smile, go get ripped off at a dealership. If you want your car fixed quickly and fixed right, go to Tran. He won't try to sell you a new flux capacitor, he will fix your car even if he thinks you are dumb. I went to Tran, saw that he had some good reviews, and his quote to fix my AC was a little lower than the place I usually take my car to. Well, he did some repairs and supposedly it was fixed. I paid him $250, and thought it was a done deal. About 1 month later the AC stopped working. I took it back in, I don't drive the car very much so it didn't really even last that long. I told him it stopped working, he took a look at it, said he'd call me the next day. 2 days went by no call, so I called him, he said $360 to fix it. I told him that I already paid $250 and that seemed high. He said, oh you're trying to screw me out of money, we went back and forth, he told me everything that he did completely different story from what he originally told me. I was very confused. Finally, he told me to come get my car and he didn't want to work with me ever again. I took it to my usual shop and they fixed it and said there's no way he could have done the work he claimed, since there were a couple holes in a couple of the different hoses. He really upset me, since I kept my calm and didn't really get angry with him, until he told me to basically fuck off. I will never go back. read more

I recently drove to Portland after finding a used car for sale on Craigslist. I called up Tran's, explained my situation, that I was nervous about purchasing the vehicle, and told him I had planned to wait until Monday morning to have someone go over a pre-purchase inspection. He instead suggested I come to the shop on a Sunday (his day off) and he would take a look for me. He was personable, clearly explained everything he found, and most importantly, was very thorough. He ended up finding a possible serious problem with the transmission, potentially saving me a load of headaches and money down the road. read more

I was stuck and on the recommendation of a friend contacted Tran (who works on the weekend). Unfortunately, I found him very rude and brusque. He pretended he did not hear me several times. He was also sexist when he said "you won't understand," when I asked him questions about my car. Would he have responded the same way if a male had asked him about their car?He also overcharged me by at least $130.00. I checked later what it would have cost to have the exact same thing done at 3 other mechanics. When I later told him that I had compared prices and that all 3 mechanics came in at about $130.00 less than what he was charging, he told me I was lying. Unbelivable! Tran told me mechanics would often quote one price, then charge a lot more when they actually did the work. Wow. Maybe so if you go to a shady establishment, Tran! Tran also said my engine looked like it had twice as many miles on it than it actually did, because "you have not taken care of your car" by having oil changes done at Jiffy Lube. When I later asked other mechanics about this, they smiled and shook their heads. The part that Tran put in my car broke within days and I had to set up an emergency appointment to have him put another "new" part in. He did not apologize for the inconvenience of me having to go back and wait two hours for them to put another, hopefully not defective, part in my car. I was offended by the attitude, lack of professionalism and treatment by Tran and will NEVER return. Obviously, had I not been stuck on a Saturday I would have gone to my regular mechanic who never quotes one price then charges much more later, and who also answers questions and acts curtious and professional. A no-brainer if you want to have customers come back, right? read more
