However, the constant rotation of teachers, having students working primarily on a tablet, and pairing students of widely varied abilities to learn from 1 teacher just wasn't what my child needed to succeed. (This may work just fine for your child.) Unfortunately, it took me a while to realize this after spending quite a large sum of money that could've been directed elsewhere. That being said, I have a friend whose child thrived quite nicely with Sylvan's tutoring so the expected results from this learning environment are likely very child-specific. It is worth a try if your child could use some academic enrichment. Figure out your child's learning style and cater the help you seek to their individual needs.

First, if you want a good idea of what your testing experience will be like, check out this video: https://youtu.be/1kK-QuuZeuw While this video wasn't taken at the DC center, it is very much the same layout, decor, computers, etc. The testing center is what you can expect it to be, a quiet and somewhat secluded space with a few workstations where you take your test. Security is tight, you will have to check-in at the lobby security guard, who will then direct you to the elevator that takes you to the Pearson suite. Once in the testing center, you will have your picture taken and your palm vein scanned. The palm vein gets scanned every time you enter and exit the testing room, including breaks. Be advised that if you do need to use the restroom during a break: the restrooms are located outside the testing center in the hallway. You will need to borrow a key from the front-desk in order to use it. While the restrooms are a short distance away, keep in mind that you do lose about a minute of your break just having to walk to and from the restroom. There are two employees at the test center, one at the front desk to check you in and one who is the "proctor": s/he is stationed outside the testing room and can monitor each test taker through a large glass window and video cameras. When I took my test the first time, I would agree with the other reviews that both test employees were very strict and followed the rules to the dotted i. They weren't nice and didn't smile at all. I felt that one step out of line would have had me kicked out of my test. But on my second visit, I encountered two different employees who were the opposite: they were both laid back and very friendly. They were still professional and certainly harped on the rules, but they didn't do it in a condescending sort of way. It was as if they understood that you were stressed out about your test, and they wanted to make you feel comfortable. So overall, I would say that your testing experience might vary based on the testing center employees you get and how their attitudes are. Pearson's primary competitor in computerized-testing is Prometric. I took a different test before at a Prometric center (not in the DC area though) and I can say that Pearson is a lot better. At the Prometric center, I had to wait 45 minutes(!) from my scheduled appointment time before I was even seated at a computer to begin my test. The Prometric center was setup completedly different from Pearson, with the center stuffed with I'd estimate 30-40 test takers sitting in a large cube farm (the Pearson center seats about 12 max, I recall). The Prometric center was definitely not run very well, which certainly added to my testing anxiety. I can therefore give Pearson credit for at least managing their test center much more professionally and sanely. At the end, I would give the Pearson testing center 4 stars. One star off simply for the restroom situation, and maybe for the inconsistency of the staff's attitudes. But, compared to the Prometric testing center I think Pearson is very good at keeping everything organized and professional. Just one less thing to worry about on test day.

They'll leave you with the class to watch fast paced videos you won't understand and expect you to understand the 50 skills you just watched, then in the last two weeks speed through all the skills. in addition to your $1200-$1300 tuition they don't mention the other fees required like $110 cpr certification, $180 physical done by them 2 days before clinical and charging you extra for a fast TB test when they could've done it at the beginning , and $60 for criminal background check. the reviews for test are also very bad timing, so make sure to do it all at home so you don't have to catch up. they'll start review 30 minutes before you're supposed to leave and expect you to stay after...It's up to you to keep up but they make it hard to do so without feeling like you might have to repeat the course.

February 6, 2020 I…read moreleft in the last two weeks due to no more new material, poor instruction due to three instructor changes, and choosing a job in the industry. Pluses First we'll start with the positives from the physical to the logical and qualitative. Location The GA campus in DC is clean, serviceable and well stocked with excellent Frontlines support. I would give it as near as 100% as possible. Classrooms always have working projectors, enough seats and whiteboards. Coffee, Peanut Butter and Jelly and tea bags are always plentiful. Outcomes The outcomes team gives the students most of the skills I learned in this industry at dozens of customers and clients over 20 plus years. As much as the students complained about the long sessions to me, those that follow its rigors will secure a position quickly. Curricula The curricula as defined in the GA SEI Syllabus compares well with Flatiron, CodingDojo, Trilogy and others. Instruction All lead instructors seemed knowledgeable of the material covered. All instructors were approachable and inviting of the material. Delivery The Google calendar was updated weekly with relatively accurate material to be presented and learned. Labs and software functioned as expected. Installfest saved the students trouble that they will quickly learn in the field. Compatibility and libraries are key from development to deployment. Minuses Now, some constructive guidance Location Those stairs are extremely steep and elevator access restricted. Heat in these historical buildings often has trouble on those frosty days. This one is no different, a space heater or two might help if compliant ones are available. Outcomes Only one thing I might recommend here are interview dry runs. We had one or two examples of interviews, and I imagine hiring panel next week will be equally excellent. But as mentioned below, practice, practice practice! All candidates I have ever met benefit from practicing the interview questions and the discomfort. I mentor all of my charges in this area. We even do professional development sessions on it. Curricula The curricula was not taught completely. For example, one of the reasons, that I, an experienced Engineer chose GA were the Algorithms and Data Structures courses as shown in the screenshots below. These courses were not available until after the course opened and even worse were never addressed. This pattern of missing core material as we moved forward forms part of the basis for my letter and departure. Instruction Our lead instructor changed three times. None of them covered all of the material separately or together. For new students this gap will carry over into their new careers. Although I mentioned this before and in tickets, it has not been addressed adequately. It cannot be rectified at this late stage. Delivery Furthermore there was often a lack of respect for the difficulties that the students faced. Comments such as the students are "lazy," "do not want to work," or "do not like to read have been heard." While I encourage constructive criticism it must be backed by instructional excellence. Instructional Excellence Although very personable as a whole the instructional style was far too loose to give new students the comfort they need in this difficult, challenging and dynamic field. Like sport and music, training for novices is about learning patterns and executing them repeatedly and in combination. As the student grows, these patterns or katas inspire the artists to create their own symphonies. Not enough structure was provided for training the students muscle or neurological pathways to allow for confident improvisation. This is my number one guidance. When teaching new material it is vital that it is taught, demonstrated, practiced and reviewed. Although much of the material had this character, it has not been consistent enough to train the students. On my final day I was directly criticized for the instructional failures of this cohort. I was told that I was pushing and telling the students what to do when in reality all that I did was: Describe the concept. Demonstrate the concept. Allow the students to choose issues to tackle. Reviewed them as a whole. The instructor who arrived later to try to guide us was disrespectful to me and to the classroom in his behavior. Summary I chose GA over the alternatives for several reasons. First, the curriculum met most of the baselines of each of the other bootcamps in the area, although it was slightly pricier, the vibe and location seemed worth it. I was 100% accurate on the location and vibe, you are a warm and welcoming team that open your hearts to all students. Please structure the courses more. I mentioned this in my ongoing ticket

3.5 stars, but b/c of the critical work being done by this org, it's an easy bump up to 4…read more patience, patience, PATIENCE. if you don't have this key trait, do NOT try to teach or help someone with reading. write a check or donate some books to WLC, or something of that nature. they are a good program and can use support/assistance in whatever way you can provide it to help adults in DC learn to read. but if you opt for one of the many volunteer opportunities they have that deal with working with literacy students - PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE. i know this b/c i volunteer in the 1-on-1 reading tutor program. i truly enjoy it ,but i will not say it's been a breeze. i definitely had to warm up to it, and it is WORK. you get a little training that, while helpful is also somewhat intimidating [at least IMO] b/c it's less than 2 hours of jam-packed information...and then you're given the workbook + tutoring materials, assigned a student, and off to start. they do try to match students & tutors based on temperament, need/skills, schedules/availability and location, so that's nice. but do not for one second make the mistake i made in thinking that if you love reading and love helping others, this is the perfect volunteer gig for you. again, you must be PATIENT. (patience is something i tend to reserve for my kid, my office, and/or my family...so i sometimes - okay, often - run out by the time it gets to other areas of life.) lucky for me, my student is a sweetheart. i'll admit i was concerned about tutoring someone older than me, but it's worked well w/o any issue WRT our significant age difference. in fact, it's added a nice dimension to our relationship as we learn a lot from one another. the set-up for the 1-on-1 volunteering is fairly simple. meet once a week and do reading/writing exercises with student from the materials provided by WLC. sometimes it's instruction and work-checking, other times it's assistance and working on exercises or new words/grammar together. the student is enrolled in one or more programs at WLC besides the one-on-one tutoring, so you (as a tutor) are a supplement to service, not THE service. for example, my student is in a weekly reading class @ WLC. other students may be in the GED program, the family literacy project, the job/career training program, or something else. (the programs listed are also areas in which you can volunteer, i believe.) once in a while WLC has community events for contributors, volunteers, staff, students and interested parties, so that's a great way to check them out if you're unsure of where the best fit for you would be, or you just want to see their work in action. you can also call the office and schedule an informational interview where you can meet staff and learn more about the programs offered/volunteer need. however you choose to get involved, just please get involved (or donate)! remember, if you are able to read this, you: -likely owe it to a teacher [of one kind or another] -are a minority is many places -know the importance of literacy

I am proud to be a Certified Professional Bartender with confidence to continually improve my craft. Not only that, but I made friends and connections at the Academy and the staff are excellent. The Academy also offers other industry continuing education classes, including proctoring the four-year valid responsible serving certificate test.
