Very nicely and thoroughly restored property from ~1910 in a cute, well-placed town for recreation…read more The Weiser River bike trail is just a short walk away, and it's close to the Snake River. Sunny summer days, cold winter nights - all is well at the Cambridge House Bed & Breakfast…read more This is our fourth time staying at the Cambridge House, and so I feel like I can finally write a thorough review. Let me first say, I'm not generally a fan of B&B's. My generalized experience has been that I feel like I'm intruding on all of the stuffed animals that have taken up residence in a bedroom. Being a man, I generally feel out of place and confused about where to sit, and what exactly I'm allowed to touch. In the case of the Cambridge House, I actually feel like I'm at home. The house is beautifully appointed and recently renovated, so it has all of the charm of the 1916 Craftsman that it is, without all of the pains of scalding water and creaking walls that I've come to expect from older homes. There are many cozy nooks in the house and finding a nice place to read a book is a true pleasure. Breakfast is prompt, tasty, and simple and the proprietor, Sheila, is a gem. It has some nice modern conveniences like free WiFi that make it easy for me to get work done while up visiting family. There are five lovely rooms, some pictures of which I have posted here. The rates are ridiculously reasonable. In short, if you're in this part of the world, this is the only place worth staying within 100 miles. We've been coming up here for almost ten years to visit family and we've tried every hotel and B&B within that distance. This is without a doubt the finest accommodation in the area, and is in a beautiful setting with some nice walks in all directions. Highly recommend anyone traveling through, or looking to get away for a quiet weekend. You won't regret it!

The Mundo Hot Spring Debacle…read more Nancy has been wanting to visit Mundo Hot Spring for quite some time so she got us a reservation several weeks in advance for Oct. 15. She reserved a small cabin with a private tub and a privacy fence. Check in was 4 p.m. and check out at 11 a.m. Nancy said there was a cafe and we'd eat there. We got there and we were showed around. It was a nice looking place. There was a microwave, a small refrigerator and a small heater. We got into bathing suits and into the hot tub we went. It was pleasant enough. When we got out I went across the street looking for food and came away with some very overpriced snacks. Nancy said there was a restaurant and left to go get a menu. It wasn't quite a restaurant not even a cafe. She came back with a menu for Turkey, Beef or some other kind of sandwich and a chef's salad. Pretty piss poor pickings. I had beef she had turkey. I could have made a dozen sandwiches in the time it took to get two. They were mediocre at best. We filled our bellies and bedded down for the night. About midnight, I got up to turn on the heat, no joy, the damned thing didn't work. At 3 a.m. we were both freezing. I plugged the heater into every electrical outlet in the place - - nada. By 6 a.m. we'd had enough. I started to truck to warmup while we gathered our things. Heated seats were never so good as they were that morning. We made a quick stop at Dutch Brothers for coffee and arrived home a little after 8 a.m. Nancy called the hot springs and was given a "We're sorry to hear that." No offer for a day pass. No offer for a free night - - nothing. So we had a reservation, waited weeks to go, and for all of the trouble of freezing our butts off, we got a "We're sorry." That's about as close to "We got your money and you can screw off" without actually coming out and saying it. That was Thursday morning. Nancy said she thought the lady she dealt with, after having some time to think about it, would come around to make it good. So this morning, Monday, I asked her if she had heard anything - - Nada! There was a time when no business would risk their reputation on such shoddy public relations. I guess that time has long passed. Take a Hard Pass on Mundo Hot Spring.

Like Jami W., I was surprised to read the bad reviews for Mundo. One clue as to the authenticity of…read morethe four one-star reviews is that the four reviewers have a grand total of 21 reviews, an average of seven apiece. One has only one review, another has four. Not very prolific for Yelp users. We brought our camper trailer to Mundo for a Thanksgiving weekend trip. Because it was late in the year, we knew they wouldn't have water or wastewater hookups. All we needed was an electric plugin, which worked fine. The hot springs pool was well-maintained and the warm water was refreshing. Employees came by frequently to ensure the water temperature remained within acceptable levels. The staff was friendly and they even refunded our hot springs fee for the final day, after we decided to leave a bit early because the forecast called for a snow storm before we had planned to leave to go home to Boise. We're glad Mundo is near an entry point for the Weiser River Trail, an 84-mile former railroad path between Weiser and Council. We plan to return in the summer to ride the trail.

The Elkhorn B&B has, if anything, gotten even better since my last visit. Debra, the…read moreowner/innkeeper, has expanded her flock of goats and now is mastering the art of goat cheese and milk-making, selling her creative chevre combinations at local farmers' markets and offering advice to would-be artisan farmers (or wannabes) along with her signature ranch house breakfasts (think fresh eggs, hash browns, melon, sausage, and excellent dark rich coffee). She's also a fountain of knowledge and great conversationalist, and her elegant ranch home quickly feels familiar within the first few minutes of arrival (once you open the gate and bounce along the gravel driveway to the barnside parking). This time, I decided to get creative and took a sunrise hike before breakfast to the summit of nearby Council Mountain (8126 ft.) in the Payette National Forest. Admittedly, it was a bit of an adventure, with fallen Ponderosa pines (the good Samaritans have chainsaws in their trucks up here), black bear cubs, a great grey owl, kestrels, and a herd of free-ranging cattle, and I didn't get back until 11:30 am, so my breakfast was an early lunch. But the chance to see the mountains from an exquisitely rugged vantage point made the 12-mile morning trek worth the effort. The food and company that Debra provided after were most welcome. You don't actually need to do a hike like that to have a good stay at the Elkhorn (or bring along French wine to drink on the patio while watching the lightning and rains come in at night). You could just hang out for a while and soak in the hip ranchhouse atmosphere while goats, horses, sheep, mules, chickens, dogs, and other creatures wander about. It's definitely a pioneering sort of place - a 21st century version of a Western American classic, with WiFi and goat cheese included.

I love #2 as well it's great if you have a larger group. All of the trailers have everything you need from a blender (wink, wink) to a barbeque. The décor well, the name says it all lol.
