One of the largest hospitals in the area, but may feel under-appreciated or underused with the Manchester Royal Infirmary only a short drive away, which is the largest hospital in the country by the number of beds. The hospital was redeveloped in the early 2010s which was much needed, and the refreshed look still feels modern to this day, it is fairly easy to get around the hospital and find where you need to go, the environment is clean, and the staff are friendly, with overly good standards. I did find a huge contrast between certain areas and wings of the hospital, even down to the modern features and comfort of the chairs, but it is the NHS... you can't expect too much. It's surprisingly easy to get through to someone at the hospital's switchboard, and I was passed to my consultant's secretary and appointment line in a matter of minutes, which is how it should be, while other hospitals can be much more inconsistent. Mobile Signal in the hospital is weak, likely down to equipment interfering with the connection. 4*

It's one of the most respected research and teaching hospitals in the UK and it's chest clinic one of the best (with some of the country's best professors working within the units). I was there last year (once in the chest clinic as it happens, and once in A&E) and given the usual negativity NHS hospitals receive, my experience was nothing but highly positive. The care and understanding and expertise of the staff is outstanding in what can often be unnerving places. It's a sprawling site and facilities are improving all the time (they're currently building a large health campus on site). I think the majority of people having to visit here would be equally positive.

I had a long an exhausting labour (with epidural) all night and finally gave birth to my daughter at 6.20am on the Sunday morning in Nov 2008. I could not fault the midwife or the student midwife who looked after me, they were amazing! If it wasn't for them, I probably would have wound up in theatre, having my daughter by C-section. The doctor who delivered my daughter (she had assisted delivery) was equally fantastic, and very professional. They looked after us so well and made coffee and toast for us after I had showered and freshened up after the birth. Sadly, I can't say the same for the ward I was on after having my daughter. The put me in a 4 bedded ward opposite a 15 year old who had the most annoying boyfriend and about 50 familiy members come to visit at visiting hours. Having had no sleep for 3 days and an exhausting labour, all I wanted to do was curl up and get some sleep, but I coudn't. The midwives on this ward basically left us to it, and after 1 night's stay there, I'd had enough and discharged myself and my daughter. Needless to say, we both recovered at home very well and the community midwives were very pleased with our progress.

As a result of the laser eye surgery, I now suffer from recurrent corneal erosions, which is like being stabbed in the eye with a needle when you wake up. My eyes are so dry that I have to wake up every few hours to put eye drops in. This has meant that I have not had a good nights sleep in the last 5.5 years, as I am always afraid that I will have an erosion. I WAS NOT INFORMED OF THIS. I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE SURGERY IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS RISK. As a result of the laser surgery, I now have permanent corneal neuropathic pain. This pain is unrelenting and there is no known treatment or cure. I WAS NOT INFORMED OF THIS. I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE SURGERY IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS RISK. I also now suffer with glare during the day time when looking at sources of light, such as a TV screen or a computer monitor. I WAS NOT INFORMED OF THIS. I WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE SURGERY IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS RISK. My life has been ruined. I found 6,100+ people on Facebook on a group called LASIK COMPLCATIONS FACEBOOK GROUP who also suffer from symptoms similar to mine. Some people on there are relatives of people who have committed suicide. Even people who think they have had a positive outcome from laser eye surgery, actually have weakened corneas. The tensile strength of the eye is reduced to 2% of the main surface area. They can have corneal ectasia, a devastating complication, many years later. The LASIK flap can be dislodged by being poked in the eye by a child. Mr. Ikram never told me any of this. I am very disappointed that Mr. Ikram did not discuss these potential complications with me. I also asked Mr. Ikram where my complications would be recorded, so that future patients can fin out about how often these complications would occur. I was told that they would only be logged in my patient record. SO HOW ON EARTH ARE OTHER PATIENTS EVER GOING TO KNOW ABOUT THE RISK AND RATES OF THESE COMPLICATIONS THAT YOU FAILED TO TELL ME ABOUT? These complications made my life as a pharmacist unbearable, and I had to give up this job as my career and retrain in something else. My story was also featured in the Daily Mail. It can be found by googling 'Sohaib Ashraf Daily Mail' and the article is called "Thinking of laser eye surgery? Yes, it could transform your life, but for some the results can be devastating -- and leave you with bitter regrets" Have laser eye surgery at your own risk.

Located adjacent to the Angel Centre, a place so lovely and charitable you feel better about humanity just walking past, Trinity Medical Centre has a good vibe to it from the get-go. The staff here bend over backwards for you and make you feel safe and comfortable. An example is when I realised I'd run out of something, I called in to get my blood pressure taken for a repeat prescription and although they were mega busy, when I explained the situation and said I needed it for tonight, the receptionist said, 'Ooh, you are cutting it fine aren't you!' and managed to squeeze me in with a nurse. However this meant that the prescription was only an emergency one and some pharmacies wouldn't accept it - not only did the receptionist know of a pharmacy that probably would, she rang them up, checked, and when they confirmed she told them to expect me in about an hour. She was doing her job and then some. The nurses here are spot on. When I went for my first smear, a well-known uncomfortable experience at best, the gentle, calm lady with a terrific sense of humour talked me through every single step of it and told me what to expect. As a result, I don't fear my next one. She was both professional and reassuring. She even talked me through what would happen to my sample and how they'd analyse it, with medical knowledge and enthusiasm, a winning combo. Trinity Medical Centre exudes an aura of tranquillity. Even if you're stressed out you'll soon be put at ease. When I returned from France having been in hospital there for a knee operation, my mother was obviously somewhat frantic about getting my aftercare and physiotherapy sorted. Again, the superb receptionist (Paula) sorted it all out. We were worried about the French medical notes, she said they have translators at the hospital as 'this sort of thing happens all the time'. She rang the orthopaedic ward at Hope Hospital on our behalf and bagged us an appointment for literally the next morning (this was done the day I'd flown back from France). With the sheer amount of students that descend on Salford every year, any that need to visit a doctor regularly for prescriptions should register with this local one. I did, and I still use it to this day. Heck, even if I move I'd probably jump back up here for appointments, I trust it that much.

I was referred to a GP by a dermatologist at the local hospital. She advised me to pick a GP near to my house and go there until I found one that was taking on new patients. In hindsight, this wouldn't have been the Oswald Medical Practice. The Doctor I saw was friendly enough but seemed quite incompetent and for some reason I didn't trust a word he was saying. He told me to come back the next week to pick up my prescription. I went back on the day he had told me, only to be told that the Doctor no longer worked at the surgery, they had no prescription, none of the records that had been faxed by the hospital, no record of my appointment and couldn't help me any further... thank you and goodbye. Although I could tell that the receptionist was inconvenienced by my presence, I couldn't leave it at that. After some persuasion from myself she agreed to go and check with 'the lady upstairs' to see if there was anything she could do. 'Computer says no,' was basically her answer, and as I finally gave up and decided to leave this joke of an establishment she told me not to bother coming back. I swiftly registered with Chorlton Health Centre around the corner. To this day even walking past this medical centre makes me shudder.

Getting repeat prescriptions ordered is simple and the reception staff are now a lot friendlier and more likely to go the extra yard for their patients.
