I first went here in 1999. My professor from Miad told me to go here for stuff because it is independently owned and about 25% less for art supplies. It looks like a little White House with black trim. It looks more like an artist studio than a craft store. If you are there for the supplies you will hardly notice. Tradewinds does framing and they have traditional art supplies (no glue guns or glitter). Framing- a lot of artists go here to frame shows. From what I have seen, the work is perfect and the prices are very good. Art supplies--go here for Windsor & Newton watercolors!! Even the Series 4 (the most expensive) paints were REALLY reasonably priced! They also have sheets of watercolor and printmaking paper, well priced sketchbooks, paintbrushes. I found a rather exotic specialty watercolor brush that I didn't even know existed...and I've consumed a lot of art supplies. John/Jon is the guy that has generally been there and helped me. If you talk to him you will find him kind and funny. I wish more artists knew about this place and supported it. It's a gem. read more

How can I be the first one to review Tradewind??? It is by far the best and cheapest place in town to get custom framing. I tend to buy a lot of posters at shows and concerts. Most of the time they're unusual sizes. Instead of paying outrages prices at a chain framing shop, I take it to this small, local business for great service and even better prices. I'm tempted to knock them down a star because the hours are weird (I think they're only open until 5 during the week and 9-noon on Saturdays), but I love the place so much that it's not worth the deduction. For an example, this morning I took a poster that's A3 sized 16.5in x 11.7in to get framed. They're going to dry mount the poster, cut a custom piece of glass and I choose a simple black matte, metal frame (there are tons of options of sizes, materials & colors) that will be custom cut. The entire frame is costing me $30 and will be ready by Thursday! The only thing I'll have to do is put it together (a very simple task). I highly recommend if you have anything framed you make the trip to Tradewind! They also sell standard frames and art supplies, but I've only used them for custom framing. read more

I have used Tradewinds to mat and frame dozens of photographs over the years - one order a few years ago had about 50-70 frames with glass for a show I was doing. I put the frames together myself to save on cost, but that part is easy. The staff is helpful and they know what they are doing. I got help choosing mat colors and again, they have the experience to know what looks good. The prices are excellent - very reasonable. Yes, the hours are not into the evenings and the place isn't built fancy like a Michael's craft store - it's rather small and crowded - but the quality is much better than Michael's and the prices, too. I have been shopping at Tradewinds for 25 years and just never thought to do a review on it until now. This place is one of Milwaukee's best kept secrets when it comes to art supplies and framing. Their prices are always discounted. This is where the universities send their students, or should be. They have everything you need for making fine art. But don't let that scare you because if you are a novice and just doing collages, art journals, mixed media or whatever, check this place out first. read more

I know that last word seems weird, but it is such a community gem of bay view. I am going to echo the other review and say that I could not be happier with the framing services from Tradewind! I've brought them a few odd size concert posters, and they've done an amazing job every time, and at a very reasonable price.
