Although she attempted to balance her school work with caring for her dog in the dorm, campus rules made it difficult. As a result, we made it our goal to find a no-kill shelter... We were not aware that this shelter was still "working" towards this status. Mind you, we disclosed that our dog will bite when agitated or if her personal space is breached when she's resting/tired. When my daughter dropped off Roxy, she was told by a member of the staff, "we love all dogs, we accept all dogs." A lady named Carlie, or a similar name, said they make every effort not to euthanize. This includes sending dogs with behavioral issues to other shelters or rescues before they would let something that extreme happen. My daughter felt secure with this answer. Also, her initial impression was that the people she met seemed to genuinely love animals. My daughter called them frequently to check the status of Roxy. She bought additional supplies to the shelter as well. One day, she was told that our dog had been quarantined because she bit a member(s) of the staff. This would have been an excellent opportunity to tell her that there is a possibility Roxy may be killed soon if this behavior continues. So, what happened in LESS THAN A MONTH after dropping off Roxy to cause the fatal reflex of euthanizing her? Did she bite someone with a short fuse?? Was it too much to ask to give Roxy adequate time to adjust to the very different routine of being in a shelter? Was a $15 temporary muzzle too much to ask? Roxy was not a rabid, out of control dog. She was a dog that loved car rides, loved to curl up next to us on the couch. She never gave us an ounce of trouble at home. She was house-trained and slept most of the day away. She was super smart - She knew when my daughter would take her on a walk before grabbing the leash and would follow her, jumping up and down with excitement. You killed a beautiful, 3 year old dog, who was precious to us beyond anything I could ever express. The only thing we were clinging to is that we left her in good hands... That one day a family would love her as much as we did. But instead, when my daughter called to check on her, she was simply told, "Roxy's deceased", in a cold dead tone, with no elaboration, no sympathy whatsoever. My daughter was so shocked and devastated, she immediately dropped the phone and started wailing. We know this was an extreme, premature action because Roxy has had numerous appointments with our veterinarian over the past three years (Cedarcrest Animal Hospital). This includes multiple boarding appointments, and doggie playcare, without one incident of biting. The staff at Cedarcrest absolutely loved her and embraced her each time she entered. I challenge anyone to call Cedarcrest and verify what I'm saying - They know Roxy Williams very well! Again, she adjusted to the routine at Cedarcrest, and NEVER bit a member of their staff. Before killing our dog, knowing how much my daughter cared for her, you would think Athens Clarke Animal Services would have the decency to call us as a courtesy. They are familiar with my daughter and her concerns about our dog being killed, but I guess that was too much to ask. I'm not saying they had a legal obligation to do so, but given the circumstances, anyone with a heart would have a moral obligation to do so. Without hesitation, we would have reclaimed her and looked for another shelter/rescue facility. We certainly don't think it's okay for a dog to bite a visitor(s) or a staff member(s), but coldly putting her to death in LESS THAN ONE MONTH is beyond belief. Our hearts are severely broken today. When I called for further details, one of the coldest ladies I've ever talked to (Cathy??) acted as if they had merely squashed a problem bug. Bottom line, if you are forced with the painful decision to surrender your pet, ignore this shelter, ignore the language online concerning their goal to become a 100% no-kill shelter. This is clearly a goal that hasn't trickled down to their staff.

Being charged a fee for an exam after an exam was just completed 3 days prior at the same location…read more( Athens Area Humane Society) Is unethical. The only valid charge should be for the Bordetella vaccine. This is flat out gouging !! It's frustrating to see an organization that promotes compassion and care fail to extend those values to the people who support and rely on them. Receptionist was truly understanding and empathetic whereas the salt n pepper haired manager wavered her decision after asking "is it for the person standing there" . Don't patronize, use your Vet for $4 more . Yelp needs negative numbers for reviews- this would definitely be a -1 rating .

I would recommend AAHS to anyone looking for a new pet, whether it be a cat, dog or small animal. They really take the time to make sure you get paired with the right pet; they use the ASPCA's Meet Your Match Program to help with this pairing, plus the adoption counselors really know all the animals so well that they can steer you to the right animal for you! All adoptions include spay/neuter surgery, updated vaccines, a whole adoption packet to take home, collar, etc. plus lifetime advice and assistance from the staff. They have so many services available in addition to adoptions, too! They have monthly Pet Care Clinics with low cost vaccines, flea treatments, microchips and nail trims; their Spay & Neuter Center with low cost, high quality spays and neuters as well as other services at the time of surgery; and several other programs to help animals in our area.
