I remember when this was a dirty unkempt building on one of the most famous landmarks in Central Birmingham, Victoria Square. Then there was the scaffold... endless scaffold that seemed to be up for years and years during construction. One momentous day, the scaffolding came down and the faux greek columns could be seen in all of their glory. Finally a fitting piece of architecture worthy of gracing Queen Vic and the fabulous floozy in the jacuzzi.
Town Hall is now used as a community hub and event space hosting plays, comedians, live music and meetings. Affiliated with Symphony Hall; the capacity is slightly smaller than the aforementioned venue, but the acoustics are still fantastic (and you get a good view of the stage from every corner of the hall).
I have attended stand up gigs (Stewart Lee), promotional evenings (Jameson's showing of "Back to the Future"), film events and plays at this venue. Ticket prices depend on the event (obviously), so you're not going to grab a cheap deal if you want to see a big star; but it's pretty standard price compared to other big venues in the UK. As a top tip, tickets for shows can be bought from the Town Hall box office (saving the extortionate booking fee) and sometimes Symphony Hall too.
Again, as expected, the bar here isn't cheap. As with most venues, you're going to pay over the odds for a pint of beer or a glass of wine - but it's normally a treat to go out to big events anyway (that's how I justify it to myself).
Inside the venue is impressive. The attention to detail in the decoration and design is in-keeping with the pompous exterior. It's always kept clean too (and the toilets have never been anything less than immaculate).
As well as great events IN the venue, I have also seen some fab events ON the venue... Let me explain. As part of the Hippodrome's initiatives in Birmingham, I have seen two massive outdoor performances (totally free of charge), which have projected on the side of the building to make the columns into a fiery inferno, a raging sea and a huge equalizer.
It's well worth keeping up with their Social Media so you don't miss out on upcoming events at the venue. If you haven't had a mooch inside before, it's open in the daytime (to allow you to look at some of the art displays or grab a coffee at the little cafe). read more
