I've only been to The Slade Rooms twice, both times to see Richard Herring, so I can't comment on…read morethe sound quality for bands but as a comedy venue it's pretty good. Slap bang in the middle of Wolverhampton you can't really miss the place, access is easy - we drove from Brum both times and had no trouble parking. Handy tip - Broad Street Car Park is £2 after 17:30 until 5 a.m. The bar is, well it's a little gig venue bar. So it's a bit of a dive. Which I love, the decline of the dive bar in Birmingham saddens me a little so it's nice to go somewhere with sticky floors and splinters. But it's reasonably priced. We got a couple of pints of Fullers New World which cashed in at only £3.10 a pint. Much less than the £4+ I've paid for it at a certain joint stock in Brum. The main room is... cosy for a comedy gig, they squeeze you in as much as possible. It's always been unallocated seating when we've been so if you dare sit at the front you'll benefit from much more leg room! Nice little venue, much lighter on the wallet than other comedy venues I've been to.

The Slade rooms isn't far from the train station and across from the Chubb Works building. The bar…read moreis a large open area with limited seating, the drinks are reasonable and the service is quick. The only thing that really disappointed was to do with the gig. The bands were so loud that you couldn't tell one song from the next and the buzzing from the speakers was awful . I think at least one of the speakers were blown, the sound was terrible. In fairness, I don't know if the bands use their own sound engineers or if they were the venues? (Rock City has the same problem but to a lesser extent and isn't as noticeable). The room itself if a good size with some seating round a corner if you want to get out of the way a bit. I would go back for drinks and I like it as a bar, I would give it another go for a band but I wouldn't expect too much.

This place is now known as The Robin 2 (I'm guessing due to a change of management or something?)…read more Prepare for some innuendo in this review! To enter the main music venue you have to go around the back (oh-er missus!) and apparently there's a bar next door, that you enter around the front! We didn't visit this part of the bar so I can't comment on it. There's a good size car park at the back, and it's free! It's one of those places where EVERYTHING is sticky (make your own joke there!!) Not just the dance floor but the walls, tables, seats etc. So try not to stay in one place for too long. I guess it's a good excuse to get dancing! They didn't have lots of seats so some people braved sitting on the floor. They may still be there now, stuck forever... They have a great line up of music acts, from tribute bands to proper bands, across lots of different music genres! I went to the Dames of Darkness festival, which was a two day event consisting of 15 female-fronted metal/rock/goth bands from all over the world. Well worth the money. On the Saturday the mike was a bit squeaky (did it need greasing up?!) but the sound was absolutely fine on the Sunday. They serve food all day and was I assured their vegetarian burger was suitable for vegans, but I had my doubts after trying one on the Saturday. The chips were very nice though. On the Sunday I confused the woman behind the bar by asking for chips and a plain bun. I had to explain that I wanted to make myself a chip butty! My friends said the pizza was good, and people seemed to constantly have their lips around pizza and wraps so they must've been tasty! The bar staff were friendly, despite it being very busy. In my tip, I mentioned napkins. People seemed to be constantly walking passed with these stuck to the bottom of their boots, I found it rather amusing! The toilets are upstairs. The stairs are also sticky, making it seem like a mountain hike to get to the top! (there is a disabled toilet downstairs). The ladies toilets stayed fairly clean the whole day/evening and for some reason they reminded me of secondary school toilets. There's plenty of them and I never needed to queue. I'd definitely go back here. It's not an outstanding venue but if a band you like are playing then GO!

I remember going to the old Robin back in the early 90's and not much has changed since then…read more The Robin always seems to have decent acts, both domestic and imported. Some of the names that have played here are amazing. Then... they let me on the stage. What were they thinking? So, the sound was very good - tending to lean toward a "Rockier" sound due to the dimensions of the room. It is a little bit of a "sticky-floor" type venue, but without a doubt has plenty of guts and integrity in it's credentials. One point that I will speak of was the food that we were served. I am not sure if the band food is from a menu that is on offer at The Robin, but it was first-class and home cooked. I went for the lamb shank and it was fantastic. All in all a great venue with some brilliant acts on the roster. I will look forward to returning whether it be onstage or off. Let's be honest, eating dinner at a garden centre usually sounds like the sort of things your parents or grandparents (depending on your age!) would do, however, this little slice of African themed heaven is a far cry from what you'd normal expect of such a place! I've not made it to Africa, though have traveled widely in Asia, and the outside felt totally authentic, being similar to bars and restaurants I've eaten in abroad. Even outside, you are sheltered from the rain, and inside, where the buffet is served, it's warm and cosy, with live music of an evening, and the most amazing spread of food. I've been a number of times since that first dinner, having returned in the day with my dog, as it's dog friendly if you're happy to sit outside - they even bring a bowl of water for our four legged friends! I've had lunch there, and the most fabulous afternoon cream tea, and cake, whilst the choice is limited, what they offer is very tasty (and I'm a fan of cake!) I loved it that much the first night, that I've refused to go there for a meal again, as I'm going for my 40th, which happens to fall on a Thursday, and looking forward to sharing the experience with close friends. The service is always friendly. It's not always super fast, as it runs on Kenyan time, so this isn't the place to go in a rush. Indeed, why would you? It's such a delightful experience that it deserves to be cherished. Oh, and the shop is pretty fab too! So yes, dog friendly, fab food, great shop and friendly service!
