This is by far the most beautiful home my husband and I have ever stayed at. We are so glad we…read moredecided to stay at de Preaux Lodge instead of a normal hotel in Matamata. The luxury B&B and Farmstay experience was unique and definitely made our honeymoon in New Zealand much more memorable. In the morning, we drove from Auckland to our Hobbiton tour at 1:30 pm. From Hobbiton, we drove about 10 minutes to check in at de Preaux Lodge. After parking in front of their home, Joy greeted us at the door and helped us get settled in. Their home looks like something photoshopped from an interior decorating magazine. Our first thought was, "This is a farm? OMG." The home was decorated with beautiful furniture and our room was very clean with a comfy bed. We were impressed their home has solar panels and motion lights which was especially nice when we walked through the halls at night to the bathroom. Joy and Ian are very kind hosts who were so friendly and welcoming. I appreciate their flexibility and how they customized our farm stay to our schedule. For example, they made breakfast and gave farm tours at different times since one family wanted to leave early and we wanted to sleep in. The farm tour was so much fun. Ian gave us a ride on his tractor while feeding the cows and let us watch him while he gave a sick cow a shot of medicine. My favorite part was giving Daisy, their friendly sheep, a treat and taking a selfie with her. We learned so much from Ian during our farm tour about sustainability and being able to live off the grid. After seeing Joy's garden, we definitely want to grow our own vegetables once we get back home. If you're planning a trip to Hobbiton or Matamata, I definitely recommend staying at de Preaux Lodge. You won't regret it.

This seems like the kinda olace where human traffickers would bring their victims. The night we were here was a holiday weekend and there were literally no rooms between hamilton, rotorua and the coast. We got the last room. It was more of repurposed closet. Had a terrible margarita at the bar. Was supposed to be spicy pineapple. Can recommend the cheesy garlic bread though, it was almost good enough to merit the one star. Other high points were the staff- Raj and his team were genuinely nice to me, but when my buddy came down to ask for soap he was literally told to F off. We asked if we just left if they would refund our money. They offered to call the police and have us thrown out. Good times!

Haha, this was kinda my introduction to New Zealand. My best friend moved to NZ and I chose to…read morevisit him for my 40th birthday. After that wonderful trans-Pacific flight, I landed in Auckland and we pretty much came down to Matamata to go to Hobbiton the next morning so we needed a place to stay and Horse And Jockey Inn was a great price for us to crash for the night. As Tom C. (currently the only other review for this 'Inn') mentions, it's a cross between a motel and a hostel. I knew that when I booked the room. BFF and I were college roommates so sharing a room was no big deal. It was pretty cozy to say the least. It had 2 beds, a heater, and I think there was a chair. That's it. Down the hall was the bathroom. Everything was kept clean, but they probably haven't made improvements since this place opened in the 60's or 70's to the rooms. Not sure what the age of the bathroom was. I was pretty tired and it's all a blur now. However, for 2 guys who needed a place to stay for a night, it worked just fine. It's located right off the main drag of this otherwise very quaint town. Staff was super friendly when we checked in and very helpful. They had some sort of rule about coming in late with keys, but I can't remember, but the key situation with getting to the rooms was different than I've ever seen before. There's a bar at the bottom of the inn and a grocery store that has seen better days across the street. I can't imagine spending more than 1 night here though. I think it's okay for a just-passing-through type of place.

I emailed (on a thread they had previously replied to) that I needed to cancel my reservation on March 23rd. I emailed again on April 6th. I have since been attempting to get refunded. I only got responses after complaining on Facebook posts. I emailed them and said I was about to get very vocal if they didn't refund me well over a week ago. They asked for my bank details and I told them that was shady and there was no way I was doing that, that they could refund my credit card. I never heard another peep. I've just reported them to The Commerce commission along with all our correspondence.

Nice initial impression. But I then noticed that the bedside table was not wiped, I could see the residue of a cup that was previously placed there, so we wiped that up. Not a big deal, the reason why I'm giving the room 3 stars was the bathroom. And really, it's my own personal preference. There was no separate shower, meaning there wasn't a bathtub or a wall to seperate the shower from the toilet and sink so when you showered, over half of the bathroom floor got wet which was aggravating. The service at this hotel though was excellent. The people are very pleasant. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant, (Breakfast was included in the cost of the room). The food was pretty tasty, the prices were very reasonable, and the service was excellent - everyone was so nice, helpful, and pleasant. If you're not picky about your bathroom, I do recommend Okoroire Hot Spring Hotel. We had a nice experience here.
