I wanted to do something fun before the weather turned on us, so I decided to look up stables with trail rides for all levels of riders. I ended up finding Tower Hill Stables, only a short drive from me. Tower Hill Stables is exactly what you'd expect it to be. There are stables with beautiful horses and lots of land to wander around. The guided tours are, in my opinion, priced appropriately for an hour long ride. (There's a coupon on the website!) Basically, you walk around the large property on your horse, guided by an experienced rider. Our trail ride was basically private, since no one else had decided on our 11AM weekday time slot. It was really nice and calming. Glory, my horse, was a bit tired that morning, so we went a bit slow and occasionally had a bit of 'take out' from the trees on the path, but it was still lots of fun! After the ride, you get to hang around the stable and see the other horses. They're all too cute! The only thing this is lacking is an element that might extend your stay. I want to go with friends, but if we wanted to sit and chat, there's no place to do that, so we'd have to go to the neighboring town to find somewhere to talk about how awesome the ride was and maybe enjoy some food. Otherwise, this is a great place and I fully expect to go back before Winter hits! read more

This stables is a place that will create life long memories. My wife and two daughters ride and love the all the stuff they can do. Our thoroughbred mare lives here. There's an Indoor arena, 3 outdoor arenas, round pen, trails all over the property, lessons, trail rides, share boarding and more. The owners along with the staff are very nice. I don't even ride however I still come up to visit my mare and to enjoy the peacefulness. I may sneak in some groundwork here and there. All the photos I'm sharing are from the stables. read more

We are not "horse people" and so I can't tell you anything about boarding or how they care for their horses. What I am is a parent with a daughter who is interested in riding and today my wife and I took our 5 year old to try riding a horse for the very first time. Everything went extremely smoothly. The instructor was very sweet to my daughter and though my child often has attention issues she was absolutely captivated throughout the lesson. I sat with my wife in the observation area and watched while the instructor taught my daughter to guide the horse this way and that and how to ride properly. For a little while they took the lead off the front of the horse and gave my daughter the feeling that she was in control (gently correcting the horse with tugs on the halter or voice commands when it wanted to go off on its own regardless of what the rider, my daughter, had to say). My kiddo had a great time and loved it. She'll be going back for lessons several times over the summer and I hope each time is as fun as this one. read more

My absolute favorite place to go. Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming. I take lessons every week with Thea and she is amazing! I've learned so much from her in such a short period of time. I'm a very experienced rider but I haven't ridden much recently, so I knew what I was supposed to be doing but just out of practice. I found a Groupon for a lesson here so decided to try it out. I told the trainer that I had ridden before but played down my level- I just wanted to see how the barn treated an average new rider. My trainer just seemed so unprofessional, I was completely unbalanced on the horse with flat work but she had me do some jumps. She kept adding more lines to jump and eventually had me doing a course, she kept adding these jumps without correcting my balance. Me and the horse weren't even hitting the correct stride counts or coming into/out of the jumps smooth. She offered no corrections during the lesson just added more jumps one after the other. I was so unbalanced that I actually fell off which happens to all riders but it seemed like she was just trying to cram as much into the lesson without actually teaching anything. Very happy to have found Tower Hill Stables - they did a fantastic ride for myself & an 11 year old novice rider. This place is amazing in size and all of the horses we saw looked very well cared for. The staff that we encountered were very friendly but my heart breaks for the animals in the petting zoo. There are way too many animals in one pen, the ducks have barely any room in their enclosure, the rabbits were very stressed and breathing hard from the heat. Most of the rabbit enclosure is in the sun. It was a very hot day when we went and I couldn't see any water troughs for the animals in the large enclosure. Not to mention that over HALF of the animals were clearly emaciated. The new cow calf was skin and bones and I could see the pelvic and rib bones on most of the animals. This is not how animals should look. My heart breaks for them. read more

I have boarded two of my own horses and shareboarded three others at this farm. The facilities are expansive. Large stalls, big indoor with new footing, three outdoor rings and numerous large turnouts. Four outdoor sand rings with cross country jumps placed around the property as well. Grass track and trails too. My second horse was brought to Tower hill directly off the racetrack. In less then a year my trainer and I took her to her first rated horseshow. Within two years she is now showing Jumpers on the 'A' circuit. Tower caters to a melting pot of riders. From pleasure to show jumping, they have trainers and care for all types of horses. I have watched little people ride their first walk trot lessons and learn all the way up Junior show riders at this barn. First rate care and knowledge makes this a great place for a horse. My horse is happy and thriving there. read more

I would definately NOT keep my horse at Tower Hill Stables in Hampshire IL for several reasons all coming from my own personal experience. The first being the owner, he is "hot headed" and seems very unethical. From what I can tell, I"m pretty sure not only does he not "like" horses but he "dislikes" them. Many boarders there share this same opinion. A few things: 1) They cut the feedings in 1/2 and then raised the monthly fee and DIDN"T tell the boarders. I found out from one of the workers. My understanding was this property was paid for so it wasn't like it was for "survival" for the stables and even if it was I don't think that's acceptable with out first telling boarders that you have removed one of the feedings. 2) There was a horse that "attacked" yes "attacked" several people (at least 4 that I know about), knocking 1 to the ground and almost getting another in the head with his back hooves. When they told the owner at Tower Hill, he said "it must have been something you did". 3) When shareboarders came to pick up my horse, they physically refused to let them take him even though October was paid for and he was leaving "before" the end of October. They tried to include him on a "stall agreement" requiring 30 days notice which he was not in, he was pasture board and there was no such agreement. If he was in a stall and I signed an agreement for that, I wouldn't have a problem, however, they were was no agreement as such and he was just tossed in with a bunch of other horses. When I asked for a copy of the agreement, it took them a long time to respond and then they just sent me a BLANK copy. The Shareboarders just paid so they could leave but he told them the amount they were paying was 1/2 of the board which was a COMPLETE and TOTAL LIE. He really charged them the entire month! 4) Several horses got cut by old fencing in the pasture, which they didn't do anything about and then my horse got a cut. I understand things like that sometimes happen at a stables but after that many times it should really be addressed. 5) They charged me for care of my horse after I got him stitched up, even though, I took care of all his needs (which were minimal, he only had 2 stitches and we all questioned if it even needed to be done but I figure better safe than sorry) . So they charged me for something they "claimed" they did but didn't discuss it with me whatsoever and I saw no signs at all that there was any care for him when I went out there. I just saw the extra charge on my credit card. The bottom line is, even though they clearly see it as just a business and $$$, they don't even do well at that piece of it, but above all, we always want our animals to be cared for by people who actually "love" animals. I just don't believe that to be true here. read more

We have had multiple trail ride parties at this facility and every guest has always enjoyed themselves with no safety issues. The trail guide was skilled, matching rider skill with horse, leading the group away from potential issues like oncoming trains. There are age limits for obvious reasons but we have never encountered anything but professional and cheerful attitudes from the staff during these rides. It's a beautiful 140 acre property. The only positive about this facility are the large turnout areas. Otherwise, there are a lot of down sides that you will find- the horses are not turned out if it is rainy or if it has rained. So, during the rainly or muddy winter seasons the horses may be in their stalls for 4-5 days at a time because they do not have a mud lot to accomodate all the horses there. Really detrimental to a horse's health and sanity! Also, I would have to say the owners are definitely there for the money, care very little about the horses. If you do not spend money on lessons with their instructors, your horse is just a number and any healthy or injury concerns are ignored. Plus they nickel and dime you at every turn. The hay is most often moldy. It also is a high traffic, non-stop gossip barn. This place made for a big headache. If you're looking for a place where your horse will receive the best in care-daily turnout, quality hay, and managers that will pay some attention to you horse (which is really important when they bring them in from turnout with an injury) then I would recommend going somewhere else. read more

Our school used them for a petting zoo. They were on time, polite, and the animals seemed to be treated well. I would recommend them.

My 6 year old daughter has been taking riding lessons here for a year now and loves the barn. The schooling ponies are great, with a wide range of skill levels available. The instructors are willing and able to work with the kids, getting to know them, helping them through the rough spots and occasional drama. She also loved the summer and winter pony camps and we'll most likely be signing up for those again. Ask for a 10 ride lesson card and your 11th lesson is free! I can't speak to the share boarding options as we currently do not lease or board there, but I have not seen any direct mismanagement, deliberate or otherwise in the care and maintenance of the horses. Actually, if the school horses are any indicator of care and level of professionalism, I would say the care here would be excellent or they would not still be in business this long. read more

Today while at the Schaumburg Convention Kid Expo with my grandson I came across a pony in a crate. No room to turn around or even move. I was horrified. After reaching out to a horse owner she advised that those conditions the pony were in are unacceptable. His halter is way too tight and his eyes are dripping.. doesn't look healthy. The experience a horse or pony feels in a situation like that is this..... this looks like a concrete floor, he very little shavings in there, to a horses foot that's like standing in heels all day one spot on concrete floor. If you love animals or even just care about how they are treated stay away from this place. read more

I have had my horse in pasture board since he was a yearling. There isn't a better place for him to be! He can live like a horse in a herd free to go where he wants when he wants. The staff is great and like another person mentioned, always willing to lend a hand and know there stuff when it comes to injuries and riding. The board is a fair price. Great property. I was referred to Tower Hill by a very reputable private stable for casual trail rides. This is one of the only stable in the area that owns enough property to have trail rides without insurance problems. I made a random call on a Thursday and was given a private ride less than an hour later. Brad was great. Good trails, great discussion, and helped out with the idea of expanding my riding experience. We talked about the reality of owning a horse. I am now tempted to plan a purchase in the future. Impressive after 1 visit. I don't know others in the area but after today, why would I need to? Everyone here was smiling and pleasant, much better than expected. read more

i used tower hill stables for my childs 5th bday party, the ponies were great and cute that came to our house, how ever the employees were not what i would call professional. the guy had tattoos and several piercings and was rather inappropriate with the children, the girl wore an extremely low cut shirt and was far more interested in flirting than leading the pony around. There is no better place for horses for the money and I am the worst kind of potential critic. I left boarding barns for my own lovely horse friendly property in Barrington Hills years ago and enjoy giving my horses ample turnout, great deep bedding and the special care they now need. However, I could not face another long, ridiculous winter without an indoor arena to exercise my horses in when the pastures froze or snowed over months at a time. My horses need many little extras. I brought them to Tower Hill almost a month ago. I have a 33 year old special needs gelding, a 23 year old with some special needs and an 11 year old. The stalls are big, well- bedded and airy and the horses are fed and watered multiple times each day(reduces the chance of colic). Moreover, this stable believes in turnout (not just lip service) and my horses get out for at least 6 hours every day unless it is storming, snowed in or sliding muddy. This makes for calmer, safer and happier horses. Amazingly, you can pay to have your horses hand walked or longed when going out (or getting to the barn yourself) is not an option-and they do it when they say they will!! A testament to their concern for all horses is that their school horses are provided with the same roomy, well bedded stalls and turnout. This is not something that you see every day at other places-unfortunately. The place is big and I was concerned my horses needs would be overlooked but it has been the opposite. The place is VERY well managed. Carrie Sibley the barn manager is on top of everything and has an excellent staff that she somehow manages to a tee. Carrie is the best barn manager I have ever seen. They have been able to transition my horses feed slowly as my horses don't react well to sudden feed changes; to twice daily mix up beet pulp(and let it sit for an hour before feeding)and add 1 tbsp. mineral oil for my old guy with no teeth in addition to his grain. (they charge a reasonable extra monthly fee for this); make sure my 23 year old who wears high heels(he was previously foundered) has his bell boots on every day for turnout. For a nominal extra monthly fee they change blankets/bell boots etc. as the weather careens between 40 and freezing. The grooms are kind to the horses and careful bringing them in and out. They call you if they notice something amiss. Basic board is relatively inexpensive so it does not break the bank to pay for the little extras that my horses need. I miss being able to observe all the things that a horse owner should but I know my horses are in the next best place. Diana J. read more
