    Sauchiehall Street, City Centre

You may very well think if you've been in one Pound shop you've been in them all but if you think…read morethis then you are wrooooong my dear fellow. Some are of the chain variety (think that big ol'green beast Poundland) & others are of the 'Is this REALLY a Pound shop...I saw something for £5 over there?..' and then some, like Pound Shop (great name btw; simple yet to the point) are just a good old fashioned £1 shop where everything is actually just £1. This one nestles within the heaving bosom of Sauchiehall Street and I'm sure it's been a few different things before it found fame as the Pound Shop. It is of GOOD SIZE and is darn well stocked. As you enter they have delightful 'Are you SURE they're not real?!' faux flowers (what do you expect for a quid) and then onwards, depper & darker into the shop more household goodies arise. Toys of questionable origin (and safety) nuzzle against pet items (You want a toy gun for your child or a lead?) which then take place against food/cookery ware. Mmm...now I may mock (slightly) but only because I actually really like the gear in here. It's one of those shops you definitely enter looking for 1 single item and end up with your arms laden with plastic nonsense & kitchen craziness. Past visits we picked up some tres chic & funky 70's inspired glass mugs, some cup & spoon cooking measures, a creepy looking bearded Santa, colouring books, pens, gift tags & all matter of other lovely shiz. Especially at Christmas time this place is brilliant if, like me, you are a fan of the more 'Retro Christmas' or you just simply like cheap stuff. Also if you have any family of friends 'darn saaarrrf' or elsewhere that is not Scotland then this place has a rather jaunty line of Scottish themed tat, I mean souvenirs. A-hoy there lots of tartan & little cuddly Scottie dawgs! If you are looking for something in particular then give this place a whirl as you never know, they might have it in stock here and okay, the quality might not be AS good as somewhere else but you know it's only going to cost you one shiny gold nugget.

The gift shop does have some amazing products and kitchen decor, so I have to keep my bank card firmly in my pocket! The food selection is vast, your typical cafe with soups, sandwhiches, burgers, paninis etc. There is also a buffet that looks to run during weekend lunch times. The individual tea comes in a silver pot, which is so much nicer than a tea bag being placed in a cup! It's a little detail, but makes you feel like you are eating out. My Grandpa had a ham and cheese sandwhich, which he didn't remark on which is a good thing. I had an incredible open chicken, coleslaw and pineapple coronation sandwhich. Would drive the 25 miles again just for that. I didn't partake in any fine pieces but the selection is vast and looks incredible. The afternoon tea seems like good value. The staff seemed a bit flustered, when I went to pay the bill the lady asked if everything was okay whilst sounding worried?! So not sure, if a bad day, but we had a great time so she had nothing to worry about.

House of Darrach is a bit of an oasis... well, that's not a fair comparison considering it's beside…read morea road with stunning scenery... but, it comes out of nowhere and is easy to miss. Now that I know about House of Darrach, then I'm likely to plan this as one of my stops on the way to the west coast. As you walk inside, you walk through a bit of a maze of various clothes, foods, and (nice) souvenirs. It reminds me a bit of walking through the duty free shop of an airport after going through security. Then you find yourself looking at a delicious array of baked goods as you make your way around the corner... giant strawberry tarts, huge millionaire shortbread, and countless (ok maybe not exactly countless) other cakes and baked goods. Judging by the other food they had on display, I couldn't imagine that you would find much if any of it to be disappointing. I enjoyed my strawberry fondant and chocolate bake thoroughly, and my friend seemed to love her fruit scone.

This shop is found in the main building of the university. I went there recently after I'd visited…read moreone of the museums and bought some beautiful gifts. It's not a large shop by any means but is well stocked and there are lovely things to be found in all price ranges, from Official University of Glasgow pens and stationery to their quality, crested, clothing; to books, jewellery, soap, candles and beautiful greetings cards. The staff were very helpful and friendly. I accidentally knocked something off a shelf (fortunately it didn't break) but the nearby assistant couldn't have been nicer about it. There's an on-line shop too see the website above.

The "Visitor Centre" at the University of Glasgow is really more of a gift shop. It's a good gift…read moreshop and the people who work in it are certainly able to give you some general information if you need it, but calling it a Visitor Centre is a bit of a stretch. I suspect there used to be more here but now so much information is available online that all you're likely to need as a visitor is directions or a branded mug. Still, it's worth a visit. There's plenty to find here in the way of souvenirs, both with University of Glasgow branding and without. You can find mugs, pens, tshirts and hoodies, as well as cute little graduation teddybears and scarves with faculty colours. There are art prints and postcards too. A lot of it is aimed at proud parents attending graduations so this is also the place where you can buy frames that actually fit the degree certificates as well as graduation videos. If you're attending one of the guided tours for the university your tour ticket will get you a 10% discount. Current staff and students can also get a 10% discount by placing their orders online.
