starter locs on medium length hair

I started my locs here with Christian in November -- great experience! he is very friendly and an expert in what he does. He made sure to check with me that I was ready for locs since it's a permanent style, which I really appreciated. He did the locs exactly the size I requested and for a reasonable price. Service was quick and enjoyable. Believe the reviews, he really is an amazing guy who does amazing hair. I've been getting compliments on my hair for weeks -- love it! I got starter locs on thick, shoulder-length hair.

Christian is WONDERFUL. He has been doing my hair for 6 years now. AMAZING GROWTH. Christian uses his own products. Does cuts as well.

Christian did a great job on my hair.

I want to give a special shout out to Christian the owner of the establishment. He was extremely professional and he knew his work. My hair turned out to be better than I imagined. He was attentive to details and was polite when I asked questions about my hair style. The shop was clean and I noticed how kind he was to the neighborhood locals who briefly stopped by. I would definitely be returning to get my hair braided again by Christian. PEACE!

I just had a great experience at Mimi Salon in Culver City. The space is super clean and…read moreprofessional, but it was Shu who really made the visit. He's incredibly zen and gave some really honest, insightful advice on what my hair actually needed. What impressed me most was that he did the entire cut with scissors--most places I go just rely on clippers, so seeing that level of talent and craftsmanship was awesome. I love the result and will definitely be coming back. Highly recommend Shu if you're looking for someone who actually knows what they're doing. He's a skilled craftsman. Ps. I got a men's haircut

I was searching for a new hair salon and found Mimi Hair with good reviews nearby. I went on their…read morewebsite and requested a haircut appointment for 4/2/26. I was matched with Sheila. I work full-time and had scheduled the appointment at 11:30 AM specifically due to my work schedule. I arrived about five minutes early for my appointment and another stylist checked me in saying my stylist would be with me soon. Other than this one stylist and her client, the salon was empty. At 11:29, I got a text from Sheila saying she was running 10 minutes late. Unfortunately for me, Sheila arrived 17 minutes late for my scheduled appointment. Tardiness aside, the overall haircut experience was average. Neither Sheila nor I spoke much during the appointment. I had a 12:45 lunch meeting with my boss, was stressed about being late, and I felt trapped. There weren't any extra frills like a nice scalp massage during the wash - I'm sure Sheila was trying to get me done as quickly as possible. I did choose to give two stars instead of one because I felt the haircut itself was adequate. No fault of the stylist's, but I found Mimi Hair's wash sinks to be extremely uncomfortable on my neck! I remember old salons when I was a kid that had old sinks and chairs that put a lot of pressure on your neck. The other three LA salons I've been to have modern sinks and chairs, but Mimi Hair must have something older...my neck was killing me! Obviously, I was hugely inconvenienced and my experience was soured. Sheila did not offer an explanation for why she was so late or acknowledge the bad impression. I had to explain to my boss that my hairstylist was almost 20 min late! Sheila charged me $90 for the haircut, and I did still leave a small tip. I guess I'll keep looking for a new salon... PS: I forgot to mention there was a dog walking around the salon. The dog didn't make any noise but it's just not right for me.

Unfortunately, this experience was incredibly disappointing. I showed the first stylist multiple reference photos of what I wanted, but she ended up adding a very dark root color to my already lightened hair, which was the complete opposite of the look I asked for. After expressing my concerns, the salon did have another stylist step in to help correct it, which I appreciated, although I waited nearly two hours in between. The second stylist made me feel much more comfortable and did improve the situation, but I still left unhappy with my hair overall. The correction consisted of using a color remover on the roots and applying toner to the rest of my hair, and I was charged $265 for it. At the end of the day, my hair looked better than what the first stylist did but still nowhere near what I originally asked for or envisioned. I'm leaving this review because I think communication and transparency are incredibly important, especially with color services. What upset me most was not just the outcome, but the way the situation was handled overall. I understand that corrections can take time and effort, but if I was going to be charged $265 for a corrective service after my hair was initially mishandled, that should have been clearly communicated to me beforehand. I truly wanted to love this salon and leave feeling taken care of, but unfortunately I left feeling disappointed, uncomfortable, and unhappy with the overall experience.

Friendly guy, clean and well kept salon, and otherwise great reviews. Leaving a 1-star because of…read morethe crazy amount of hair I've lost since the procedure. My experience was deeply disappointing and damaging. Owner's response to this review lacks accountability and honesty. I've had Brazilians in the past and typically the stylist flat irons the formaldehyde into your hair, then washes the chemical out, then re-straightens it. Instead this time, I was sent home without the process properly finished, just after the formaldehyde was flat ironed into my hair. I WAS SENT HOME WITH FORMALDEHYDE STILL ON MY HAIR. It seemed a little weird but I was relying on the stylist to be the expert. I reached out the next day to ask when I should wash it out and Stylist said "Whenever you like". So, unfortunately, I waited until my next hair appointment to wash it which was 2+ weeks later. Stylist expressed shock but seemed unwilling to admit that what he did was not only negligent but demonstrated unawareness. It's typical and standard for black women to get our hair done biweekly with no washes in between. I'm still a little surprised that he would be shocked that after formaldehyde was left on my hair for 2 plus weeks, there would be damage. Not to be funny but it doesn't seem like rocket science. Formaldehyde is dangerous! Via text he asked that I share that I went to another salon for a flat iron twice after seeing him. Again, demonstrating unawareness. He offered a deep conditioning treatment, but I was wary to return. LONG STORY SHORT IF YOU'RE AFRICAN-AMERICAN, I DO NOT RECOMMEND! STYLIST DOES NOT UNDERSTAND BLACK HAIR. PERIOD. Hopefully this can be a lesson learned. I spent $240 to learn the hard way.
