What! There's a Total Wine in Southern California. Well, I'll be. I thought that this was BevMo territory, but I'm glad to see a Total Wine in these parts. This Total Wine visit was a means to an end, to be honest. I visited strictly for two reasons: One, to procure bourbon that can't be found in the Midwest. And two, to grab a bottle of red wine that has a twist-off cap that I could take back to my hotel room. I'm happy to say that both missions were accomplished! This Total Wine is like many of the other Total Wine stores: It's very organized and neat, with helpful people all about. That's one of the things that I love about Total Wine: There are people here and there in the aisles, ready to help. The other thing that I love about Total Wine is that it's so super organized, so you can just pop into a store and find what you want. That was the case for me, and I was in and out very quickly. I needed a specific bottle of wine for a friend's birthday gift. I looked online and as usual total wine had the best price. Upon arriving I saw they had a tasting for 10¢ so we opted to try a few tastes of wine and holiday nog. This is such a good way to find wines to your liking before purchasing. There was a varied selection. When we were done tasting we asked the woman who was pouring where to find the wine I was looking for. She walked us over to where it was and explained that they had other labels under their brand that were good too. It was great information. We knew what we wanted was the higher end brand name. Knowing what our friend likes made it easy. The lines were a bit long at check out but we got through eventually. Stopped by this location recently because they stocked a product that is no longer available at many of the Total Wine locations in Orange County as well as my closest store, located in Temecula. Normally upon entering any Total Wine location, I usually hear a greeting buy a staff member somewhere near the entrance. Not this time, not even by the young lady standing in the front area office near the entry doors. I walked to the aisle where the product I needed was located, and again, a young female stocking the shelf close to where I was standing, never acknowledged my presence or asked if I needed help. She even left and returned to the same aisle and still said nothing to me. The only employee that was personable and courteous was the young lady who was conducting my purchase at the register. Being in the industry I work in, I all to well understand the need for mutual respect towards employees and never approach anyone with a sense of entitlement or feeling of superiority. I treat others as how I wanted to be treated, so I was surprised at the lack of basic customer service skills some of this location's staff lacked. You may be surprised to see me writing a review for Total Wine, lol. I'm obviously not buying for myself, but I come here to find gifts for friends and family. I like Total Wine because they have a great selection, and better prices than other wine & spirits shops. They also have a great loyalty program, and I received a $10 off coupon in my account. The bottle of wine that I was looking for on this trip was out of stock on the shelf. I located an employee nearby, and he went the extra mile to find the case in the upstock. He also helped me in picking another wine to use my discount on. Checkout was fast and efficient, and I received another coupon for next time. I've gone to 3 places that said they had 1 NA beer I was looking for and didn't carry it, but they finally had it. They had 2 or 3 of the wines we were looking for which was a bonus. Shopping at the San Marcos location has officially became annoying! Today, my wife and I were at the register to check out and we were once again asked to provide identification for our bottle of wine. However, the gentlemen in front of me whom could not be more than five years older than me was not asked to show any Identification nor was the two women with him who at glance were younger than us all. The "new" cashier with excessive makeup and denim top and bottom scanned my wife's ID after overly analyzing the card, decided to ignore me when I asked is there an issue and called a manager over without acknowledging our question. I truly dislike shopping here because the experience varies greatly only at the checkout counter. Management, as a 40+ year old adult...it is not flattering to be ID when many others in line aren't asked at all. Please make it mandatory that "all patrons" are required to show ID rather than a few with varying hues of skin color or do not card at all. Again, it doesn't feel good nor make for a positive shopping experience #100% ID Check (even when the other patrons step aside that aren't paying). read more

went in with my friend and boyfriend, two of us had our ID (we are 26) and they turned us away at the register due to my bf not having his. no signs nor warning in the beginning of the store, no id check prior to checkout even after browsing for a half hour. told us even in my man went back to the car and brought his ID they can't sell to us??? if you don't want the business girl then i guess have it your way. will not be returning and i strongly advise everyone else to buy their liquor elsewhere. overpriced anyways. read more

Stopped in today to pickup a couple gifts for birthdays of clients. I heard from a good friend that the Gran Malo Tequila was really good....I was shocked at the price....very inexpensive! Picked up 3 bottles (including one for me to try - not a big tequila drinker but I promise to be responsible). I love this particular Total Wines because it's close to my house! Well not that close but it beats driving down to Encinitas. Just like with any Total wines, there's every type of liquor your heart desires. We come here especially for their worldy wine selections. And those $10 off $50 coupons that put us in this cyclical spending! If it's not expired yet the cashier lets you keep it for the next time. So we're in this never ending loop and just keep coming back! When they first opened they had some vendors for games. We won a free shirt and bathing suit. There's wine tasting. And just the other weekend we got a free wine goodie bag with some stemless white glasses. Free stuff! Well not exactly because we spend a lot too. Lol. The people here are friendly too. Normally, I love Total Wine. At this location though, there's a big problem. Her name is Rebecca, and she's the assistant manager. Walked in with my friends, one of whom had an open soju, and she was on him like a hawk and told him he couldn't bring it in. Sure, fine, makes sense. However, after the rest of us had finished browsing and brought bottles to the counter, is when the improper behavior started. Rebecca went out of her way to double back from where she was going when she saw us going to checkout, and said "You know, I could have refused you service because of what happened earlier." She was talking to all of us, including my Black friend who had been the person who she had stopped with the open container. Rebecca couldn't even recognize who of the group, including multiple Black men, was the person she had been up in arms about. She continued to act as if she was doing us a favor by allowing us to make our purchase. If she really wanted us to leave, she should have said as much. There are plenty of places where we can take our business, including other Total Wine locations. She continued to hover over us at checkout, only calming down slightly when the one white person of the group was speaking with her. Rebecca tried to make us feel unwelcome with this unnecessary confrontation at the end of our visit. Maybe her middle name is Karen. I know I will not be returning to this location, and am disappointed in Total Wine for permitting such unprofessional behavior from their assistant manager. read more

I don't know the area entirely, but I believe that I was going to Carmel Valley location. I am thrilled to find a close to home San Marcos. I plan to use this store. I really love their selections, people are friendly, they appear to like their job. Different than beverages and more in Escondido. It's the most unfriendly service you could possibly have. I'm from the bay area going to beverages and more there. They say good morning. good afternoon how are you doing? What can I help you with? Beverages and more here they rather not have you come in. They're are slow, lagging disinterested. I do think there's a little bias toward women. Back to Total Wine it's a different environment all together. I like your wine tasting. Im from Napa .
