In general, I'm a big fan of total wine and frequent our local Texas store probably more than I should. This particular location was a huge disappointment. Staff was not friendly or welcoming. Many bottles were in the wrong location on the shelf, too many for it to be just a customer putting something back incorrectly. I needed to find a specific bottle of wine and the young man who came to help us not only did not know a fairly common variety of wine, but was rather brisk and snappy, and by the time he finally came back after trying to look it up, we had already found the bottle ourselves. The store itself did not appear to be particularly clean or well-maintained. I understand that it is a smaller store, but with as many employees as they had standing around one would've thought the shelves would've been better stocked. read more

I can understand viewing your license for your age but they have started "requiring" to scan your I'd in compliance with New Mexico! There is no law requiring this! My experience was horrible. I'm a cancer patient and wasn't feeling well. I needed to purchase a Kosher Wine in a hurry for a holiday. I usually order online but was in a hurry as it was a last minute pick up so I went inside. Big mistake. I was harassed by an associate who decided I didn't need to have the wine. She demanded I take out my ID, In Texas you only have to show it for the date not hand it over. I struggled but got it out. She demanded I take off my mask. I said I was sick. She said then I didn't need the wine after all. I took it off briefly. She said it was too fast and she couldn't match my face to my ID. I'm bald now from chemo so I don't look like my picture anyway. She said I'd have to remove the mask altogether. I said no. I said I want someone else to check me out. She got the manager who said they needed my address instead. I have no idea why. I asked her why did I have to remove my mask if all they needed was my address and she didn't respond. I'm sick and dying of cancer so I guess dying sooner from getting someone's flu or measles is just what this thing wanted to happen to me. That or a Jewish customer shouldn't shop there. Total Wine takes your personal information when it scans your driver's license and places it into a data base that can be sold to anyone. They violate state laws NMSA 60-7B-2 (demanding id for persons over 35) and NMSA 57-12B-3 (taking your identification without permission). If you care about the security of your identity, do not shop at total wine. Manager said he did not care what state law said. State law protects you. Buy elsewhere. read more

On the one hand, I'm not a fan of "big box" stores. If it were possible I would prefer the days when we could get everything we needed at a neighborhood store, owned by a family living upstairs or next door. But those days are history, and like it or not, large scale retailers are today's norm. On the plus side, the ability to maintain a staggeringly huge inventory means you can find just about anything you might want at places like Total Wine. Therefore, when I have the opportunity, I like to shop Total Wine to stock up on things I can't get at my local grocery or a family run store like Templin's Beer Depot (where my dad shopped for beer, liquor and wine in the 1960s). So I recently developed an interest in wine and decided to try one of the Total Wine wine classes with my husband. The class I attended was called "So Many Ways to Chardonnay". I absolutely LOVED the class and had so much fun. I was really nervous about going because of how brand new I am to the world of wine. I literally had never even tried Chardonnay before attending this class! I worried the class would be full of wine snobs but it was the exact opposite. The teachers and other students were super welcoming and friendly. Everyone was chatting with everyone before, during, and after the class. The teachers were very knowledgeable (wish I could remember their names) and had no problem answering the hundred questions I had. The class was 2hrs long and you got to try about 10 different Chardonnays from different regions/brands. It cost $20 to attend. I learned soo much in such a short time and found out I actually love Chardonnay. I highly recommend attending one of their wine classes if you're new to wine. It's such a great way to try and compare different wines without having to buy a whole bottle. You learn much quicker this way! It's also a great date night idea. One suggestion I'd like to make to Total Wine is to consider adding vegan food options to the wine classes. This class came with prepackaged cheese, crackers, and sausage to either take home or eat during the class (my husband and I just declined the food). The next wine class they have coming up is called "Wine and Chocolate - A Perfect Pair" and I confirmed that it was mainly milk chocolate being provided so I will unfortunately not be attending that one. I would absolutely love it if vegan food options were added to the wine classes so that vegans could get the full experience too! read more

I am fairly impressed with the selection in this store. I went in looking for mead. I asked a sales person if they carried such selection and where it might be. They directed me right to the location. I picked up two bottles. The price was slightly higher than anticipated. The bottles did not have much appeal upon looking, but I was familiar with the brand name and selection by name only, referred by friends. I looked at the absinthe selection but sadly they did not have the one I was looking for in stock. I made my purchase and went home. Upon opening the two bottles of mead to sample. I was first impressed with the bottles after observing what they were made of, unique. The taste was also sweet and a good bouquet of flavor. The staff member at the online order appeared that he did not really want to be there. I was dealing with a busy day with several pick ups and dealing with Total Wine was not an easy experience. I had many places to visit to pick up online ordering and Total Wine was the only place that was a let down. Order placed at 8am for a 1pm pick up and was notified at 1238pm by Dylan that a product was not available. Dylan, my suggesstion is better timing. This product was a gift that they substituted with an inferior product. Why was it inferior? I ordered two items for to gifts and the substitution was 1 item. Agh, okay, right out of the gate, I need to note that if I lived remotely closer to Jubilation Wine & Spirits, that's where I'd buy my booze. The dearth of quality, knowledgeable local liquor options in this town amazes me. Why aren't more people getting into this business? It's so profitable! I mean, if a pandemic isn't absolute proof that humankind depends on liquid poison to survive -- or, just kill us off faster -- nothing is. Toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, bulk rice, underwear, Grey Goose vodka: essentials. During the pandemic, I turn to Total Wine to get my buzz on because I can order online, there's a decent selection of local beer and wine, I can pay for it online and pick it up, boxed and ready to go, an hour later. They text and email when it's ready and the process inside the store is pretty streamlined, I'm in and out within ten minutes. That said, I'd really appreciate a curbside option. I'd much rather avoid all unnecessary indoor exposure and spend more time at home, exposing myself to gut-busting, braincell-crushing fermented death in a bottle. read more

This is my favorite place to get either beer, wine or spirits! They have a HUGE selection. One thing Total Wine offers which no place I've ever been like this, is classes on various things. I've taken classes on cocktails, Scottish, wines and some others I can't remember. You learn a lot how such things are produced, the history of whatever's being discussed and so on. You're there with other people looked to learn about the subject of the class. And you get to have some munchies at the same time. :) The staff here are excellent. It amazes me that each total wine store is different. I understand that you need to stock what your customers will buy in each location, but a dramatic price difference in one city seems the norm here. Although, we live in the east foothills we shop at the store on Coors. They carry the wines we drink on a regular basis at $3.00 less than the store closer to us. If our wine is out of stock they will order it for us and call when it has arrived. I would say this is not the happiest store I have ever been in, and at times you have to search for a sales person to help you. They have classes, tastings, and a nice assortment of wines excluding champagne which I think they lack in good taste. As long as this store continues to carry our favorites we have no problem driving the distance. read more

We stopped in to buy Bailey's Salted Caramel. Although online and the store's system showed they had 8 bottles in stock, they could not be found. You'd think this would be upsetting, but Scott was a total pleasure! He climbed up and looked through boxes, then recruited the help of someone with a lift to look through more boxes. While we were unable to find what we came in for, he recommended a great alternative, Fennellys Salted Caramel, which was really good! He also did a tasting of a couple tequilas with my husband, and walked us through some alternative whiskeys based on our likes. Normally I take my time walking through the store just so I can see all the different drinks. The place is always clean when I walk into the building and the employees are very nice and helpful. On a vacation and you ask why I needed to go into a liquor store? It comes down to a few things. #1: I like to check out a couple of liquor stores(if possible) on vacation to compare bourbon prices. 90% of the time things are usually a few dollars to more than a few dollars more expensive than here in KY. Obviously, shipping plays a role there. It's also worth it to see if there are any rarities that can't be found regularly in KY. Most things in the bourbon section here were only three to five dollars more expensive. I was surprised. I was also glad to see High West so much cheaper in New Mexico as opposed to what it can be purchased for here in KY. That is to be expected because High West is made in Utah. Speaking of Utah.. Utah but I'm so much taller! #2: It's always a treat seeing regional beers that are rare back home. It was also odd not seeing any Rhinegeist on the shelves! Those little skull filled cans are commonplace in the Midwest. Seeing Founder's KBS on the shelves was also a weird thing to see. I see it here in Louisville, but not everywhere and definitely not much of it. #3: Shoutout to Albuquerque for supplying their citizens with chile wine, beer, and spirits! You can't escape the green and red stuff no matter where you look out there. Overall I liked this Total Wine. Thank you for your response and policy clarification. I haven't been able to find your "group ID policy" laid out anywhere on your website nor do I remember seeing a sign posted on the door. Just "We don't allow any person under the age of 21 to enter our store unless accompanied by an adult guardian of legal drinking age". I did show the employee my ID before exiting the store and had already shown my ID to a different employee at the tasting counter. I have no problem providing valid ID (even just to enter the store, which I feel would be a better way to handle the issue). It was just beyond frustrating to be trapped in the store - since every other exit is blocked off (which I've never seen at other Total Wine locations). I also wonder how employees can differentiate from groups of people who are purchasing together and single shoppers simply trying to leave since there are no other exits. My husband wasn't at the register yet, his items were in his cart, I went around him (including the cart) and another customer to get to the exit. If I had just been able to step outside for a few minutes this whole situation could have been avoided. I've shopped at this location and Total Wine stores in multiple other states and have never had any problems before. This could and should have been handled better. Otherwise, the other employees were friendly, the store was clean, and the selection was good. This whole situation was just really upsetting in the moment. read more

This place makes me look like a raging boozer every time I stop in to pick up drinks for the get-togethers I throw every Friday. I literally leave with a packed shopping cart full of stuff. Yeah...it's bad. I lived in Belgium for a bit, so I had become rather fond of their beers...so of course I went hunting for them once my family and I moved to ABQ. The first place I spotted them was over at Cost Plus World Market...pricey, but hey, I take into consideration they're imported. Not to mention, they're AWESOME. Then I finally had time to peruse Total Wine and I swear...little angels busted out with their heavenly music when I saw that TW has a pretty fantastic selection of Belgian goodies. They carry Leffe, Duvel. Kwak and even blue label Chimay! Score! Plus I can skip through the aisles and snag all sorts of margarita mixes that cost much less than what I pay at Smiths, even with their spiffy card that's supposed to save me money. The only reason why I didn't bust out with a 5 star review is because of the cashiers. I don't know if they're hung over because they enjoy their product, or it's because they couldn't be bothered to show some sort of life. When I ask how they're doing, the response is barely coherent and they come off annoyed that I was actually NICE. Crazy, right? Anyway, if you want booze, they got it. Bottles up! read more

It was awful. It took the head manager to get the attention of the two so called "managers" to acknowledge that I was there. When I asked for my on-line payed for order, they said it was right here. He loves buying singles because he loves exploring new flavors without making a six-bottle commitment. Total Wine allows you to buy single bottles, and with such a massive selection, well... I'm sure I feel similar to the way he feels when we go to the mall: "are you done yet; can we go now?" This place also sells non-alcoholic stuff if you need it, from mix-ins to Perrier to soda. There's a whole section dedicated to housewares, where you can pick up a wine rack or a home brewing beer kit. Total Wine really does have it all. Very excited when they announced they would open two stores here( another location will open in the uptown shopping area) as I used to hit these places up in AZ and NV on vacations as their selection is unrivaled. Quarters and Kelly's will be in trouble. Their pricing on liquor and wine blows the competition away( even a bit better than Costco) and if you bring in coupons watch out! On Selection: There is nothing comparable in the State of NM. It is similar to Specs in Houston if you have been there. Plus we are hindered a bit here in NM by the local liquor distributors controlling what you can buy and not having access to some of the more esoteric liquor,wine, and beer selections. Have you noticed when you go to a bar in ABQ, the draft options are the same everywhere? I don't know who they are using here in terms of distribution, but you will find stuff you can't find at any other liquor stores. Prices and selection aside, their staff is actually trained well compared to the likes of Kellys or Quarters. They are competent enough to offer recommendations and challenge you to new ideas.They seem to like their jobs. I also like their tastings that they schedule on weekends. I might be a bit trite when I say this, but Total Wine is the Walmart of alcohol. It has any type of alcoholic beverage you can possibly imagine--and maybe some you did not realize existed-- at reasonable prices. But be prepared. This place is so overwhelming huge--they have an entire aisle just dedicated to cabernet sauvignon wine--that it is best to go in with at least an idea of what you are looking for. That said, they're friendly and knowledgeable staff are there to assist you should you have any questions. One of the coolest aspects of the store is that they offer weekly wine tastings, as well as classes! I, personally, have taken a wine tasting class, but never one for beer and spirits!
