Our two boys participate in the kids classes and they love all the coaches. We used to go to Gracie Barra in Burbank but my kids stopped enjoying the experience and got burned out. It got to be too many kids and not enough instructors or adequate supervision for their summer program. My kids got to a point where they dreaded going to class, which is when I knew it was time to stop going. We took them to several other Gracie Barra locations but they didn't enjoy the instructors so I thought we were done with Jiu Jitsu until we found Total Jui Jitsu. To our surprise, we found that a lot of the coaches and families also left Gracie Barra in Burbank for the same reasons and so my boys knew a lot of the kids in the class. Great kids and wonderful families. The Total Jui Jitsu coaches aren't yellers, which creates a really chill environment and there is serious focus on good form, respect, and execution. All the things I expect and they over-deliver in each and every class. They won't allow kids to get distracted and ensure they are truly learning the techniques the right way. If they see a child performing the moves incorrectly, they immediately step in to coach and correct so the kids don't injure themselves or others. The kids really respond to the coaches' positive and encouraging approach and I can definitely see it in my boys faces after class; they beam with pride. I am so thrilled that they were able to rekindle the love of Jui Jitsu. I highly recommend this Jui Jitsu studio for any family looking to have their children participate in a fun sport, learn self-defense, build confidence with supportive instructors, and have a lot of fun while doing it. read more

I can't recommend Total Jiu-Jitsu enough! I was totally new to martial arts and decided to give BJJ a try on a whim. I filled out the form on the Total website, and the next day Coach Kyle promptly contacted me to fill me in on the program. Everyone at this gym is extremely welcoming and positive, and especially as a woman I feel comfortable and supported despite being new to the sport. I went to get info .. I show up and thrs a class in session... no front desk, no one to greet you... not a big deal .. I see a small table with a bunch of clip boards out in the open with class info and a pen attached to each clipboad .. I pick one up and the guy giving class yells out "hey put it down, I'll go to you when I'm done" I freeze and turn to him and say " put it down?" He says " yes" .. I put it down and walked out... what an unprofessional attitude to have .. the damn clipboards were out in the open stacked up like a magazine rack.... too bad... I immediately went down the street to Villains Jiu Jitsu .. the guy couldn't be nicer .. what a big difference in attitude.. humble, respectful and nice! read more

Truly a wonderful group of people. I wanted to put my 6 year old in some sort of martial arts class and decided on BJJ because I liked the idea there wasn't any punching involved and yet at the same time it is arguably the best self defense for a one on one encounter. The thing I wasn't expecting at all was just how great the guys who run this place are - Artin and Kyle and all the other coaches are just the most welcoming and humble bunch of people you could ever hope to meet. For kids as well as adults. Seriously, DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE INTIMIDATED ABOUT TRYING THIS PLACE OUT. After having my son in their classes for a while, they talked me into trying one of the adult classes... and I was blown away. Not having done any grappling before, I wasn't really prepared for the intensity you experience right on day one... Truth be told, I kind of panicked and was a bit of a spaz for a while. But true to their character, the coaches patiently just kept trying to help me work on my breathing and learn to be calm in the heat of battle. When we put my son in a new school that would mean moving out of the area, we even tried to find a house that would still allow him to train here. We were unable to in the end, but just the fact that this was a factor in us BUYING A HOUSE should give you some idea of how highly my wife and I think of this place and the coaches there. As for BJJ, for those of you just wondering in general if it's a good thing for kids... I'm 6'2 and 230 lbs... and recently got PUT ON MY ASS by a 16 year old girl at the place I train now. Granted I'm a white belt still and she's been training for quite a while but still... is there any reason on earth you wouldn't want your daughter (or son) to have that kind of power? Prof Artin, Coach Kyle and Coach Andre are the most technical folks in the game. You'd want to step in and learn the details and intricacies of Jiu Jitsu, yet very simplified to beginners. Total jiu jitsu is top notch. I started training 5 months ago and have been hooked since day one. I had never trained before so I was relieved to find that the coaches and team members have created such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to learn jiu jitsu. The fundamental & mixed level classes typically consist of a fair amount of beginners and seasoned practitioners, so the training is great no matter what level you are. I started training here about 3 months back. It was just after they moved to this new location. The guys at Total Jiu-Jitsu are extremely professional, kind and super supportive. In life you lead by example and the the example these guys set is of the highest order. They are a class act for sure. Hands down the best gym/dojo ever! I will never regret enrolling here. All the Coaches are great and even my training partners. Gained genuine friends in here and I wouldn't trade it for the world. One thing I also pride myself in being at this gym is unlike other gyms(that I've read about) here at Total they don't promote you to a higher rank or just give you stripes when you don't deserve it just so you would stay with them. I was looking for a local Jiu Jitsu gym for my son and found Total Jiu Jitsu on yelp. I told my son we would try 3 different gyms out and then make a decision. This gym was our first and our last. My son has had a wonderful experience here and loves it. It's really exciting to see him have a strong connection jiu jitsu. He is very enthusiastic about going 4-5 days a week. What makes this gym so great is the coaches, families (members) and the gym itself. Artin and Andre who work with the older kids are amazing along with Kyle who works with the younger ones and wow does he have patience. Truly amazing. I've been some of the other gyms here in LA and it never felt right. Too many guys with something to prove or there just to hurt guys. I never felt comfortable at these gyms so I hung up my gi for a few months until I moved into the Highland Park area. I drove past Total a few times before I finally decided to reach out and couldn't be happier I did. From my initial contact with Coach Kyle to my interactions with the rest of the coaches and fellow trainees, I couldn't be happier I joined Total. Great place for beginners and a great place for more experienced guys as well. The classes are helpful and the coaches are always happy to answer questions. I went to 3 jujitsu gyms before deciding on Total Jujitsu. My favorite thing about this place is the people. Hands down the head coach Artin is the best coaching experience I have had in all of my athletics background. As a long-time judoka who has always loved newaza and gotten tired of repeat judo injuries, I had been looking to transition into jiu-jitsu for a while but just hadn't found the right place. I've been to many other jiu jitsu gyms where they have their positives but some negatives as well and never felt truly comfortable training there. But once I found Total Jiu Jitsu I knew I found a school I can comfortably call my jiu jitsu home. This is probably the best place to learn jiu jitsu in LA. They have an amazing coaching staff with people that have devoted their lives to learning and teaching jiu jitsu. The class sizes are usually not to big, but even if the do get large, the coaches make sure everyone understands what they are doing before moving on. Highly recommend trying it out. read more

This was the second BJJ gym I had checked out in my neighborhood. The first one I tried was small and not super welcoming, and gi-only so I kept looking. I tried Total and bam, search over! Great facilities, plenty of mat space, knowledgable and caring coaches, welcoming and supportive team of students at all skill levels. There's classes for every one at any level: gi and no gi, kids, adult beginners, adult advanced, takedown classes, open mat. I think they are starting one geared towards women/self defense specific and I think yoga too. There's heavy bags and other equipment for cross training too. This gym has plenty to offer both the advanced BJJ practitioner and the beginner nervous to test the waters and all in between. It's been 3 or 4 months now since i started training at Total and I'm so glad I gave it a try. At first I thought "I'll try BJJ and maybe go 2 or 3 times a week" which plenty of people do and that's great and plenty to stay healthy and learn lots of jiu-jistu too...but I've found I can't stay away and am going as often as possible now...at least 5 days a week and sometimes twice in a day. I highly recommend trying Total if you're looking for a place to try out a Jiu Jitsu class to see what it's all about or if your a seasoned higher belt and looking for a new place to train. read more

My 6 year old daughter has been taking jiujitsu classes at Total Jiujitsu for over a year now. The classes are perfectly scheduled during the weekdays, after school/office hours and there are also classes over the weekends. The coaches take good care of the mats keeping them very clean. They are also amazing with the kids! Each coach has a different technique that creates an overall balance that is both entertaining and instructional. Whenever classes are full, they bring on another coach to help in. Total Jijujitsu is a great place for kids with or without experience in martial arts.
