Maryland is currently experiencing a cold snap and with wind chill the temperate drops below zero. One day before the cold snap, my HVAC broke and is beyond repair. I have an older 1300 square foot home with new window and no insulation in the walls. However, due to the seal created by the super attic and clean crawl space, I am sitting in a house that is 71 degrees with only the assistance of a propane fire place and one Dyson portable heater. At night, I set my fire place to 68 degrees and turn off the portable heater. When I wake up the lowest temperature in any room is 66 degrees. I am so glad that I choose the super attic and crawl space because during this busy time of year, I do not have to worry about the cost for installing a new HVAC under emergency conditions. That peace of mind is priceless. I interviewed three contractors before selecting Dr. Energy Saver of Central Maryland to insulate my home. I was impressed with Dan Hope because he started at the ground floor performing the actual insulation himself prior to hiring a staff. Jesse and his crew were responsive and eager to coordinate directly with my insurance provider, which helped move the process along--but not without some concerns. To start with the positives: Jesse is communicative and aggressive about pushing the claim through insurance. Once work began, the repairs were done relatively quickly. He clearly wants to keep things moving and keep the client informed. However, the full process--from damage to completion--dragged into early April. A lot of that delay falls on the insurance company, but not all. CRE can be a bit too eager to upsell or stretch the scope of work to fit what insurance might cover, and that added some complexity and delay. More importantly, the execution left a lot to be desired. The fascia and trim work ended up dented, scuffed, and uneven in places. Nails were bent over instead of properly seated. Cosmetic flaws that shouldn't be present after a professional repair. And the biggest issue: the roofing subcontractors were extremely sloppy. They left debris scattered across my yard and nails in my driveway--one of which ended up in my tire. That kind of carelessness really undercut any goodwill. In summary: Jesse is responsive and energetic, and CRE will push your claim hard. But expect to keep a close eye on the job, especially the subs, and don't expect perfection on finish work. We moved into a home…read morewith a Shaw's 2016 heat pump install and will be spending ~5k to address the poor quality of the air handler install. The previous owners of my home were quoted 13k for this install. Code violations, did not follow manufacturer's instructions and no permits pulled. Permits have been required for changeouts in Talbot County since 2012. Shaws declined to view the install and consider making things right. Another local HVAC company saw this install and said "holy shit I wouldn't have put a sticker on this." - Our unit is only ~ 1 inch above grade and is supported by patio pavers. Both unit, ductwork and condensate pump are sinking into mud causing moisture and mildew problems. - Manager said he has never heard of codes requiring mechanical equipment to be at least 3 inches above grade. Attached is a screenshot of the 2018 international mechanical code (current building code for town of Easton, MD) regulation for clearances above grade. - Manufacturer's instructions included 4 inch condensate p trap, due to unit being installed only 1 inch above grade they installed a shallow trap (~ 1 inch) which manual says explicitly not to do. Picture attached. - No permits pulled. I believe that the unit would not have passed an inspection. - Duct work is touching dirt. - A crawlspace company that had no skin in this game noted our install is "in the bottom 10% of installs they've EVER seen in this area." - Our condensate pump was buried in mud despite unit saying "Indoor Only". Shaw's manager said that our crawlspace should be considered indoor, but at the same time also said that there was no secondary condensate system because it was not considered an indoor environment. Be prepared to get the angle that least benefits you if you use this company. - No secondary condensate drainage, secondary pan or no overflow detector which goes against manufacturers recommendations. The real kicker in this situation is that Shaw's refused to come out and view this install and to consider making the situation right. There was one other company that we had questions for after we moved in and they came out, assessed the situation and made it right. I would not recommend an expensive install with this company.
