Horrible people working at store totally unprofessional accused me of stealing. At which point I pulled out my pockets and even let the one employee stick her own hands in my pockets to see that in fact I had nothing in my pockets. I hadn't done anything to elicit that kind of attention and I was in the store a total of I think 7 mins so when they saw that I was was not stealing they didn't even apologize for their false and gross accusations. I don't steal and never have stolen anything in my life! They lost my business forever and anyone else I know for that matter. They should have at least apologized when they realized that they were wrong. I mean she felt inside my pockets and saw that I had nothing... That means they were in the wrong! Am I the only person on the planet who just discovered this incredible business? I definitely have been missing out. That is for sure! Huge does not even come close to describing the amount of inventory available at Total Beauty Experience. And definitely not just beauty products. But why not begin with "everything" beauty! I had searched everywhere for simple cosmetic sponges. Once a standard item at Tarjay. No more! Those little silver hair clips....gone too! My GF told me about this store so I made a point to visit when I was in the neighborhood. I was totally blown away when I walked in as well as overwhelmed (but in a good way.) WOW! Any beauty product you want...it is here. Name brands too. Including those cosmetic sponges and clips. Yay! Products galore for everything (hair, face, body, nails...you name it). But the BEST discovery was the experienced staff on hand to help with ANY question or assistance one may need. "Experienced" is the key word here! While checking out the goods, I came upon the ''Brow Bar". Whatttt??? An area with big mirrors and lots of lights. With the help of one of those "experienced" staff members, I found the perfect eyebrow color! I had searched all the big department stores and nada. Belen sat me down on a high top chair and started bringing different samples of caramel color brow powder for which I had been looking. Made my day! There is a full-blown salon in this store!!! I was not happy with TBE's advertising for their 30th Anniversary Sale November 7-10. Every ad sent to me via email showed 25% - 30% off storewide. The only catch was that the 30% off only applied on Thursday, November 7th. I did not see it noted on the top of the first ad until now; however, all subsequent emails show the exact same 25%-30% statewide sale ad. Today I showed up thinking that I would get 30% off something but to my surprise, it only applied on Thursday. I heard another lady complaining about it because all the signage throughout the store even said 25%-30% off. Nothing was 30% off today. I like this store and will continue supporting it but they should have been more specific at advertising their Anniversary Sale. If you cannot exchange a curling iron for something of a greater value, what good does that do for anyone? I can buy the same product at Amazon and if I don't like it I can return it. I am sad to have to say this as I love this store & want to start going there more to support them. But my experience there just this afternoon wasn't as good as it usually is. No store employees greeted me or asked me if I needed any help like they always have in the past. There was loud rap music playing & it was really obnoxious, distracting, & not appropriate for the atmosphere of the store. There was a St. Patrick's Day sale & the clerk didn't ring up my purchase at the sale price. When I pointed that out, she didn't apologize & simply rang it up again at the correct price without acknowledging her error. A woman came in & asked an employee if they had a certain product & the clerk immediately & curtly said, "No, we don't" and that was it. The woman was taken aback by how dismissive that was. This place is the unfortunate combo of terrible product range and awful customer service. I should have read the other reviews before going in, but that was my mistake. The store clerk, an elderly white woman with grey and brown hair, kept following me around the store and staring at me when she thought I wasn't looking, and it was pretty obvious that she thought I was stealing. Her vibes were off from the moment I walked in, but I ignored it thinking I might be overreacting. But when she continually came up next to me around the store and didn't even speak a word, just picked up various items and put them back down while watching me from the corners of her eyes, I knew she was racially profiling me as a criminal. The behavior was hurtful, but also so obvious that it is kind of funny in hindsight. She definitely can't blame this behavior on "attentive customer service" this time, considering she didn't even offer me any help the entire time I was there. I might have spend a couple hundred dollars there, but most of the products on the floor were very dated and well past their sell-by date anyway. I think if you're shopping for a grandmother or grand aunt you could possibly find something for them here, but if you're like me, I would recommend skipping this place or at least double checking the expiration date before you purchase because they do not accept refunds (likely because they are aware of this problem). Not only was I treated like a criminal while trying to engage in self care by shopping for beauty products, but the product range was thoroughly unimpressive. Try out Blue Mercury in Midtown Sacramento, or even the Ulta or Sephora in Arden. I promise you will find a better range of beauty products that AREN'T expired and without the hurtful treatment. My hairstylist sent me on a mission to Total Beauty Experience (TBE) for a specific shampoo for me to buy since I am moving out of town. My hairstylist has several clients who live in SF (where I am moving) and noticed that their color is completely stripped by their next appointment, even though they are using the same products and practicing the same upkeep. Since I have been working with my hairstylist for over 3 years on both hair color and care, I take her word very seriously and went out to buy the recommended product. I went to TBE and was instantly impressed. Even though it is a local business, there are SO many different products and tools for all things beauty. There is even a salon in the back of the store (similar to Ulta). As a personal care junkie, I'm surprised I hadn't visited this place sooner. Since I was having issues tracking down the shampoo, I asked the people up front for assistance. One gentleman volunteered to help and showed me the exact product I needed. He asked if I was having issues with hard water. I said no but my stylist recommended this product to me as I am moving to SF. He immediately told me that this shampoo would be way too harsh for my hair and that I do not need it. He then went on to say he can't understand why my hairstylist would ever recommend this to me as my hair looks healthy. I explained to him that my hair had just been toned, cut, and styled hours before so that could be why it looks very vibrant. I kept explaining over and over that I am still interested in buying the shampoo. The salesperson took me to the next aisle and was giving me a sales pitch on a different shampoo. He said that this would be much better and even placed a bottle of it in my hands. Wanting the interaction to be over, I thanked him and then flipped the bottle over for its price. The price was DOUBLE what I was going to pay! He saw my sticker shock and explained that the shampoo in my hands is a higher quality than what I was going to buy as he walked me up to the cash register. Feeling super uncomfortable, I paid and left. I sat in my car for five minutes baffled with what happened. I normally am very good about not letting salespeople sway me out of what I need or want. The salesperson was by no means rude but VERY persistent. I debated if I should go back in and just get the bottle I originally wanted but felt weird since I knew he was in there. I talked myself out of it and told myself to just give the shampoo a shot because I can always return it. It wasn't until I was home that I saw on the receipt that there is no cash back or crediting on returns- just store credit. I just felt ticked off the rest of the day that I was talked out of the original product. The next day, less than 24 hours after purchasing, I called the store right when it opened. The manager picked up the phone, so I explained the situation to her. She commented that the shampoo her salesperson was trying to sell me was a far more higher quality product than what I wanted to buy. Ouch? Given the situation, I requested if there is any sort of exception that can be made on the return since I didn't open the product and it had been less than 24 hours since the transaction. Since I paid double than what I originally was going to purchase, I wasn't really interested in getting store credit when: 1. I'm moving out of town, and 2. I only wanted one bottle of shampoo. The manager shut me down immediately. She said that never in the 24 years she has been working has TBE ever provided a customer with a refund. It took a lot for me to not shoot back that what she is saying is a bold face lie. I had read a review on Yelp (Duckie P. in 2015) that they ended up giving a customer a refund plus store credit. Not wanting to spend my last day in Sacramento arguing over a bottle of shampoo, I folded and said I would come in and just exchange the bottle for what I wanted. It bums me out that my experience at TBE was not more positive because I love supporting local businesses. PROS: - Variety of products is on par with big box beauty stores - The saleswoman (Nichi?) who did my exchange was really nice; it seems like she was told by her manager that I would be coming in to do an exchange. She apologized for the inconvenience. CONS: - Buyer beware: TBE's refund policy is unforgiving - Since I wasn't interested in buying two bottles of a new shampoo, I browsed around to look at other products I could buy. I frequently use Batiste dry shampoo so I picked up a can thinking it will help eat into my store credit. I had to do a double take. The can was retailed at $15.99. I picked up another can to see if it was printed wrong. Nope. All of the cans say $15.99. You can pick up a bottle of Batiste at Target for $5. I am so sad to give this store only 2 stars. It has a great selection of beauty items, from well known brands to hidden treasures and everything in between. I don't know of any other store in Sacramento that carries TheBalm, Jane Iredale, and Smashbox cosmetics under the same roof. You can always find unique candles, trays, toiletries and beauty gifts at the last minute. Their prices are kind of steep, but I'd expect that from a small beauty boutique. Overall, the selection is unparalleled. So why the low rating? I feel like Big Brother watches me the entire time I shop. There is usually two employees standing sentry at the entrance and a middle-aged woman back in the cosmetics area who watch you intently and repeatedly ask if you need help. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable. When I'm looking for beauty tools or makeup I want to feel like I can freely browse without being monitored like a criminal. The space is huge and has a lot of variety whether it be hair care brands, nail polishes, candles, bath bombs, Swell bottles, phone cases, etc. The staff is very informative and knowledgeable about their products. I was about to buy a refill for my shampoo and conditioner (300 ml) which is around $20 each. When I was being rung up, I was suggested to buy it in bulk which was a much better deal. For about $60, I'd be getting both the shampoo and conditioner (1 L), which is a little more than double the product for a lot cheaper price. This is my go to place for hair care especially. I suggest just checking out the place because you might be pleasantly surprised. They also give lots of samples when you check out. read more

I've always passed by this store but never really got a chance to go in until today. They had a large selection of items, which I found nice. The employees were also nice when I was there. My complaint is that I bought a Wet Brush, or at least I thought I did. When I got home, I started looking at it and it turns out that it is not authentic. The logo is different and the website on the packaging does not go to the official Wet Brush site yet lists the official Wet Brush social media. I called the store to see if I could return the brush because it is a counterfeit and because I hadn't opened the packaging yet but I was denied. The employee told me that there was a strict no-return policy on brushes and did not help me further. I am just upset because I wanted to support a local store and instead got counterfeit merchandise that I paid far too much for. UPDATE: the manager has replied to my review, stating it's not counterfeit but I firmly believe it is. I have an older Wet Brush at home (I have had Wet Brushes in the past and they have never had the word "the" in it) and the logos look vastly different. Also note that the blue brush I bought from this store has the word "wet" in quotation marks and that it's has TWO different logos on the same brush, one with (TM) and the other with (R). So I am kind of a beauty supply junkie. It has gotten worse as I have gotten older and have been trying to beat back the inevitable march of time on my face. As you ladies over 30 can attest, reality starts to set in as you reach your mid-30s and find lines on your face and see that your once shiny mane of hair starts to thin. Yikes! Where can girl go to get some help? You have found it at Total Beauty! Ulta is fine, but they cater more to younger girls or people happy with drugstore brands. Sephora is nicer, but just like Ulta, all of the employees are super knowledgeable about only a few products. I went in asking for a primer and walked out with a color corrector (which was promptly returned). Total Beauty is a different experience. Every time I have come here it is because I had a problem that I had not been able to find through my Ulta buy and return travels. Higher end lines like Jane Iredale, Jan Marini, Cosmedix are what this place is known for, although their pricing is not much different from Sephora. But like most ladies (and gentlemen) of a certain age, I am willing to pay for products that work. What IS different is the level of knowledge of the staff. Their sales people are on point with recommendations and are totally willing to walk through regiments and products with you to find the perfect product for your needs. I have not purchased a single things form here that I needed to rerun. On the contrary, they have gotten me hooked to several products that I now refuse to go without! Toward the beginning of the pandemic when numbers were skyrocketing and before plexiglass shields, the salesperson at the register had her mask below her nose. She came around the counter to hand me my bag and walked up with a foot of me. I was concerned at the time because I have an immunocompromised person at home. I called the manager to ask the store policy and express my concern. I was assured that customer safety is very important, etc. I've continued to by all my products here even though each time I see an employee with mask below nose. Oh well, just roll with it and wear my mask. Today. while looking around, I noticed a couple of times that the clerk behind the counter i the middle of the store had her mask below her nose. While checking out the person next to me, she had her mask down the entire time even when walking up to the person to hand over her bag. The salesperson helping me was busy and didn't notice. In a moment of lost patience, I said to the girl that there really wasn't any point in wearing a mask if she was going to keep it below her nose. She pulled it up and rolled her eyes at me. Seriously...rolled her eyes at me. As much as I love this store I'm beginning to think this must be the management culture. Great selection and a men's section made Total Beauty Experience a good spot to get beauty products and a great place to get your high-end skin care products. I've come in a couple times, appreciative of their late weeknight hours. I was promptly greeted by staff, but they can get a bit overbearing since I thought I was being followed to make sure I didn't steal anything. I just wanted to browse my first time and had a hard time shaking one of the staff. There is a ton of stuff at TBE, making it a somewhat cluttered space that I had difficulty navigating. They separate out products, but the order isn't intuitive, like having brand-specific areas and product-specific areas like shampoo's. I did get good advice here, the staff are pretty knowledgeable. I was wondering about a new face wash to help with new blemishes caused by growing out my mustache. They recommended a few things and even sent me home with samples to try out (they didn't work out, but all good). I ended up getting Yon Ka products because my old esthetician had me using it when I was in Marin. Very pricey, imported, and exceedingly rare men's line was actually quite affordable! Great prices on the different higher-end skin care products stand out, I'll get all mine here for sure. Wow! I'm shocked by all the negative reviews. I have been coming to TBE for years and have always been treated courteously. I love that they have employees situated around the store, cause I always have questions when I want to try something new. Their employees are very knowledgeable about hair products and have never led me astray with their recommendations. Their prices are competitive with other stores--and no, you cannot compare their prices with Amazon cause you don't actually know if you're getting the real thing online. Okay, now the other reason I go to TBE is Lynne Allen. I will follow her to the end of the world to do my hair. I have super thick, wavy, frizzy hair and she is the ONLY person I trust with my hair!!! She knows the best styles for my hair type and has prevented many hair disasters over the years. I've shown up with a picture of a haircut I want that so-and-so celebrity had and she's been like, "Yeah, no...that cut will never look like that with your hair". So, I always trust her and walk looking fabulous! Oh, and she's also a superb colorist!!! Other stylists ask her for color suggestions! I've been in here a few times and they do have a good selection of products but the smell of the store is extremely overwhelming and so are the staff. Theres a fine line between helpful and straight up following me around the store. I'm sure the staff is just doing their job, following instructions but there should be some kind of communication between staff members about who has checked in with whom. Needed a new blow dryer and curling iron, so I visited Total Beauty. The owner kindly greeted me at the door so I asked for her recommendation. As someone who has gotten by with drugstore styling tools, I was a bit surprised by the cost, but since my work has resumed I decided to treat myself. I cannot believe how awesome the dryer is! It took half the time to dry my thick hair and it looks great- not frizzy. It has several temps and the cool is actually cool. Total Beauty Experience has a wide array of brand name beauty products. They also have helpful staff. It's why I had been a customer for more than 20 years. I drove 32 miles out of my way to shop there. I've been satisfied with my purchases and in the past it's been worth the drive. Two weeks ago, I stopped to buy more shampoo and conditioner. The salesperson was very friendly and recommended a new brand called Alchamé. She recommended the Mimosa one. Since I drive so far out of my way, I usually buy a larger size. I asked about the return policy and was told that if I was not satisfied, I could return it for store credit. I liked the product. Unfortunately, it didn't like me. The two times I used it I got an immediate allergic reaction. My eyes became red and swollen. The first time my daughter wondered why I had been crying. The second time it happened I called the store. Laura was cordial and said she'd look into it for me. True to her word, she called me back and explained that the owner would not return the items because Alchemé did not accept returns. I thanked her and let her know I appreciated her getting back to me and that I would not be shopping there again. In my experience, Total Beauty Experience is a nice store as long as you don't need to return something. Give it a try. Just don't buy the liter size containers in case things don't work out. read more

After years of coming here they totally cheated me today! I was so upset! I shopped here several times through out the year instead of cheaper places so I could get my customer loyalty card punched. I came in today to finish up my card and I had $35 to go. (I had two $10 spots and three $5 spots left!) I came in, I even counted it with the nice sales lady before I started shopping and I asked her the details on how to redeem the card. I purchased $37 worth of merchandise pre-tax. The manager took my card, punched two $10 and one $5 punch spots. (He may not be able to do math but I think we can all agree that's $25) then handed it back to me. I was like no, I had $35 dollars left. He said he punched $35 and that I had two $10 spots. Yeah? I know that... two $10's makes $20 and I spent over $35 pre-tax!!! WTF!!! I was livid! I would think after watching my rewards closely and him having a big line, he was a lot more apt to make a mistake than I was ESPECIALLY WHEN I JUST COUNTED IT WITH THE SALES LADY! I told him that too, he just shrugged, didn't even bother to ask her to see if he could of made a mistake and was so rude and just said, I'm not trying to cheat you and left it at that. I walked out with out making the purchase. I was not going to spend another DIME there if they are going to cheat their loyal customers out of money. A customer lost over a manager not bothering to handle his $10 punch card mistake by asking his employee or thinking about what he did. That is such a pity. I left my number for the owner and unless they fix this, I highly doubt I'll ever set foot in that store again. 1/14/14 - The owner never called me back and I have shipped online and at every other store in Sac. I won't ever come back here because they will steal from you and don't mind doing it. read more
