Also as a Varsity Card holder, I get special invitations to private parties with free access and even free drinks! If you play on a league, you receive 10% off your individual team fee. The card can also be used at various venues for no line/no cover access and 10 - 20 % discounts on foods and products. Additionally, the card already comes equipped with $25 from BuyYourFriendADrink.com to use at participating bars! The best part is that I only have to carry one card to get all these discounts and special access, all the while doubling as my BYFAD card. Just a Note: SBS also offers a JV card as well with similar discounts and access.

I LOVE BOSTON DERBY DAMES!!…read more I've been following this crew since way back when they had their exhibition bout in Providence on that sweet-ass outdoor track and we were all like freezing our asses off and catching skates in our teeth on the front row. Then they moved up to the gym at MassArt - Sold. It. Out. and STILL had a huuuuuge line around the block. That was freakin awesome. I am still sad that "Bone Saw" cut her derby career short. She was kickass. (She just quit. Nothing tragic happened. That I know of.) The Nutcrackers are my girls (with a special place in my heart for a select few from the Cosmonaughties - Easy Bake Shovin' and Violet Rage). But my main girl has got to be Malicen Thunderland. Girl skates with HEART! You are guaranteed an awesome time at these bouts. Go! Support this local sports juggernaut while you can still afford their tickets! Player-owned and operated! These are no princesses and prima donnas. They get down and dirty. They're not afraid to fall on their asses. The bands are sometimes fun, too. And they have good raffles. And the Shriners are amazing. And the beer is pretty cheap.

Despite registering on time and paying the full amount (referral coupon s3friends did not work), I was not added to the mailing list and not assigned any team, and had no direction on where/how to proceed. I tried calling the numbers listed on the Facebook/Instagram pages for further information, but the calls never went through. I then reached out via email following the first week of play, but received no response. Finally, I reached out to the phone number (listed as s3 leagues corp.) on my payment receipt only to get an irritated response from the organizer asking me not to contact her on her personal cell phone. Repeated follow ups produced delayed and shallow email responses. After this entire ordeal, I was not added to the mailing list and was not notified of the cancellation during the rain out last week. I finally got fed up of such inconsideration and asked for a refund, to which I received no response. Last I checked, I have been blocked from the Instagram page for following up on the matter. This has been a terrible experience for me because at one point, I was eager to join this league and meet new people and make friends in the same manner that I did in the social meetup prior. The organizer of this group, Jessica, has proven to be incompetent, inconsiderate and disrespectful, and I would certainly not have even thought about joining this group had I known that she was the one behind the scenes.

I'm looking forward to other events that S3 is offering and next season. I know once softball comes back around I will be signing up for that, too. I also want to mention that communication with Jess has been amazing. She is very responsive to questions and concerns. Even in the beginning she made sure we all knew what was going on before games started for the season.

I am always quick to applaud the city and surrounding towns (way to go Cambridge and Somerville) for the wealth of outdoor activities, both solo and team-related, available to residents. One of my favorite such Boston-based young-people-centric outdoor activities is my weekly WAKA game at Roberto Clemente Field in the Fens. My team, the Electric Mayhem, has been together for years in the Ironsides League (there are several leagues in town), and through it I have met some of the nicest and most fun folks you can hope for. If anyone ever thinks that it's hard to make new friends, sign up for a WAKA team and you'll have a dozen new ones after a day. The Ironsides League (and I hear the same about the other ones) is just competitive enough to be fun. Teams have a vested interest in winning and playing hard, but not so much of an interest that folks get disgusted and enraged after a loss. Everyone's there to just play and have a good time. The leagues are all well-managed and that management leads to the quality of organization and general spirit of WAKA in Boston. So yeah, in short, get some comfy sneakers on and get to the field. It's game time.

The gym floor is used recreationally throughout the day by elementary school children for their gym class. Each side of the court has completely different rims (one is double rimmed and one is not)....the floor is also completely warn and don't allow for quick stop and go play....this gym simply benefits the team that hits the most jump shots. It's equally as hard to drive as it is to defend against it; again, because of how slippery the floor is. Post game write ups and stats are inconsistent, inaccurate, and often times delayed for all leagues but the top one. Don't expect anything impressive/on time. Post season play is rushed to allow time for the upcoming spring/summer session. This resulted in almost non existent updates for existing leagues. In terms of timing of games...playoffs were planned on an adhoc, on the go basis to accommodate those who run the league. This league is not worth the money unless you are in the most competitive league. The guys who run this league clearly don't consider the fact that we all pay the same amount to be a part of the CACbasketball league and expect to be treated like it. My advice for anyone who chooses to play in this league -Go in with low expectations and understand going into it that you are overpaying for an under delivered service offering.

I've been coming to this place for about 3 years. On its best day this place is a 2.5, maybe 3 star…read moresort of place. I mean, I get it. They have a facility - at a low rental price point - in a city where such space is really valuable. The following are three things that have ensured that I won't be taking my business there again: 1. Cheap vs. low cost: You get what you pay for kind of place. Nickle and diming on league play with their $20 membership card that is NEVER checked. Questionable referees. One of the turf fields is barely turf. Feels like you're playing on concrete so careful with knees and ankles. The place feels just feels like they don't really have any interest in putting any money into maintaining it. Cheap. 2. Rundown vs. spartan: To say that the facility is bare-bones is pretty gracious. I mean, you don't really need much, but in the winter it's not really heated, the water (not just fountains, but bathroom sinks and toilets) were broken for like a month - that was awesome, especially with a 5 year old kid... I've already mentioned that one field... 3. Rude, unprofessional, and just kinda mean :\ You know, the reason we all put up with it was because we understood that this was the kind of place you just came and played and left with no real expectation for much else. Fair enough. The proverbial feather on the camel's back was this week when - because of their administrative error or confusion - they accused me of GOING OUT OF MY WAY to be a "nuisance" to them when my weekly pick-up didn't book on the new year's weekend. The reason we didn't show up was because we never planned to be there that day because, well, it was new years... On the phone with Juan (who I imagine is a manager?), he told me that we intentionally did it to cause them distress. Didn't really understand why they would assume that this was our motivation considering we've never been late to pay, have always called ahead, shown up, etc... On top of this, his tone was a bit inflammatory as if he were doing me the favor of letting us patronize their facility. Anyway, it was pretty clear these guys aren't interested in cultivating relationships with organizers like me (I run a weekly pickup with a pool of over 60 players), so I'm on the hunt for a new place that will appreciate my patronage and doesn't treat me like the poorly maintained grounds and equipment they find themselves in. I've noticed that I'm not the first pickup group or league to leave this facility because of similar reasons.

Downside is the facility and the management. If there is a rainstorm, the roof will leak and potentially flood the fields like it did the past few weeks. Their electronic scoreboards haven't been working properly for years. You cannot tell if there are 3 or 8 minutes left. Now their main turf field scoreboard isn't working at all. They used to have two for it, now they have none. I hope it comes back after the facility dries out from the flooding over the past two weeks but regardless, it wasn't working properly to begin with. As for the management, we signed up to play here for a Saturday men's league in May 2009. Only two teams, one being ours, joined the league. We made a $185.00 deposit. The league never happened and since that time I have been trying to get our deposit back. Management does not respond at all. The only reason I play there is because the league I am in now is run by an outside group called FSSG. They are legitimate and run the league perfectly. So other than the location, I wouldn't play here if it wasn't for FSSG.
