Great stargazing. Close to restaurants and a few shops. Numerous hiking trails in close proximity. The mercantile nearby had some basics, but not much so keep that in mind. Luckily we had a variety of restaurants to pick from.

This campground has gorgeous pines throughout and sits right on the edge of Little Red Fish Lake. Cost: I came here with a fairly large group of people (16), so we had to snag two camping spots. They only allow one car per site, but you can purchase extra parking passes if necessary. We paid $18 per spot per day and $9 for each additional car. (You'll want to bring cash with you to pay, as there is no way to pay for the sites via cc or check!) ETC: - No showers (wah, wah), but if you're going into the Idaho wilderness, you might as well be ready to rough it, amiright?? - They do however have bathrooms with stalls, a sink, and a mirror (for a camp-sight, these bathrooms are very well kept and clean #PRAISE). - Access to drinkable water. - Firewood for purchase on sight ($7 a bundle). - Each camp-sight comes equipped with a firepit and picnic tables. - Bonus: lots of trees, so if you have a hammock, be sure to bring it along with you!

We called in as we were driving towards Stanley from Craters of the Moon and realized we would not make it in time for the checkin which ends at 10pm. We asked them what was their procedure for late checkin. No other way to put it but: "We were interrogated for 15 minutes on the phone. We were told in a threatening way that we would be thrown out in the night if there are more people than the ones allowed in the rooms." There is a way to talk to people and this is not how to talk to someone who has booked 3 already paid for rooms in your hotel and are stuck in bad rain/snow weather and are requesting a late checkin. The rooms by themselves were clean. Hot water was available. No instructions were left for internet.

The owners were very nice and helpful. Our room (#4, upstairs corner) was clean and spacious, with an awesome view of the Sawtooth Mountains. The WiFi was touch and go. Warning: Dining options in the area are extremely limited and rather expensive for what you get. Since the Valley Creek Motel's rooms include a kitchen, you may want to consider making your own dinner.

Think forest service log cabins from the 1930s. Basic necessities are met here: hot water, shower, toilet, sink, heater, bed, nightstand, table. I ran out of hot water in the shower, but was the only one in our group with that complaint. Bed was ok; my back didn't ache when I got up. Windows are drafty, but the old heater cranked out a LOT of heat. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the old knob and tube wiring connected to the WW2-era rotary light switch. Then I saw modern romex wire lining the ceiling connecting to the heater. That's always a little scary, but we survived. Surprisingly, there were a couple three-prong outlets for your modern electronics. We were told wifi was available, but we couldn't find it. Stanley is a beautiful town with tons of creeks and rivers running through it as well as several epic places to eat and drink. Recreation heaven. If you're just looking for a place to lay your head at night, these rustic cabins will suffice.

Up the road from the Dredge is Custer, an old mining town with some great history and events during the year. And its just beautiful up there, take some time to hike around and enjoy the great Idaho Outdoors. Not far from Stanley Idaho, and along the Salmon River where you can find hot springs to soak in and lots of areas to camp.
