I enjoyed the friendly service and great prices at this family owned and operated business, which was established in 1960. My L1 lunch was served with a smile in 12 minutes. It included two chicken enchiladas, rice, beans and complimentary chips with medium salsa for $6.95. I liked the shredded, premium, white chicken and the good beans, but the rice was too moist, and the portions were just reasonably sized. I found the service to be stellar - welcoming, friendly and attentive with no shortage of chips or salsa. The clean, spartan dining area offered a mix of booths and tables with a bar, classic rock background music and several TVs. I also noticed a patio out front. We came here because of the great reviews and loved the cozy, hole-in-the-wall vibe. The service was wonderful--everyone was so kind and attentive, which made the experience pleasant. However, I was really let down by the food. Unfortunately, it didn't resemble Mexican cuisine at all. The cheese dip, salsa, and chips reminded me of something you'd find in a nacho Lunchable. The enchiladas tasted like they were made with marinara sauce, and the rice and beans had the texture and lack of flavor similar to microwave meals, with the beans tasting straight from a can. Even the tacos and chimichangas had American cheese, which was surprising. It's frustrating to be so disappointed, especially since I want to support small restaurants. With the great service, I hope they can make improvements to bring the food up to par. read more

Super Service and Great Food! The beer is ice cold! My favorite is the Enchiladas or Tacos!

I find myself in downtown Overland Park much more these days than I ever did in years past. That's due mostly to having added a client or two who are in that neck of the woods. A number of years ago, when my treks to that part of town were much fewer in number, I noticed an old building with cool neon lighting that simply said, "Torreador Mexican Restaurant." I made a mental note that I should grab my bride for a casual date night and give it a try... But I guess the note got "buried" because we never went. A few days before Christmas I wanted to visit a couple of my favorite boutiques in the downtown area, and it occurred to me that it might be a great chance to try out this place. My wife was off work and was game to join me, so off we went! The restaurant is as tiny and unassuming on the inside as the impression given by its exterior. We were greeted immediately and shown to a booth. We chatted with the fellow who seated us and he was very friendly. Service was great from beginning to end... And I really felt as though we were in a place that values relationship with its customers. Almost everyone we saw while we were there seemed to be a regular customer based on their interactions with the staff. I really liked that. The menu was concise and the price point was amazingly affordable. We asked a few questions about specific menu items and ended up, because the prices were so low, ordering an assortment of food items to try. When our meal was delivered, it was exactly as expected. My wife and I shared all the items and compared our impressions... Be aware, we are lifelong Texans who have lived in Kansas for the past 15 years. Our standards for Mexican food may be more unrealistic than many other people, but we make no apologies for it. We were raised with a certain style of Mexican food, TexMex, and it is the standard by which we judge most of our restaurant adventures! Don't judge... ;-) Of the items we ordered, the crispy beef tacos and the toreadors were by far our favorites. The chili Reno and enchiladas were good, but not outstanding. Most of the food items were dressed with Ranchero sauce, which I can take or leave. Theirs was as good as any I've had anywhere else. As we tasted and talked, I remember saying to my wife, "This is all 'fine,' but it's nothing spectacular." I would not feel the need to drive the 25 minutes from my house for the specific purpose of eating at this restaurant, but if I were in the neighborhood around meal time, I would also not hesitate to go back... Especially since I now know which food items I prefer. If you're looking for a remarkable culinary experience, this is NOT it, but if VALUE FOR PRICE coupled with GREAT SERVICE floats your boat, this place is not to be missed. read more

food is not quite as good as it used to be, they overdo the red sauce which has no flavor. Tacos have shrunk in size by about 30%. We used to go weekly, we go occasionally now. Service is awkward, they either ignore you or they inappropriately won't leave you alone. We've been going for years and really hope they turn things around. For the price this is great food. I think I got 2 enchiladas and 2 hard shell tacos for $8. Plus a ton of free chips/ salsa. Sure it is a bit of a dive bar but if you go enough the owners become real friendly with you. This seems like a small town bar/ restaurant in the heart of a city. I'll be back for sure read more

I love this hole in the wall. I occasionally crave greasy Tex-Mexy food PLUS I also don't mind eating my dinner under neon blue lights while listening to Black Sabbath. I am also a people watcher, so I don't mind watching the people who've been drinking at the bar all day long. It's a fun spot to hide out & have private conversations, and laugh...lots of laughter. Worst service ever! we sat down and waited 10 minutes for the server to even acknowledge us. She gave us our drinks and never came back. People at the next table showed up 20 minutes after we did and they got their food before we could even place an order. We left money for our drinks and left, never got our order taken. I eat at Toreador around once a month and was shocked by the negative reviews on here so decided to write my own. Toreador is a nice place when you want good Mexican food at a reasonable price. Most Mexican restaurants in KC seem VERY loud and open. I like the smaller size of Toreador , just feels more intimate and the service is always excellent. Any of the combination plates are very good but honestly all taste very similar but kind of common in Tex-mex. The portion sizes are large no matter what you order. Gross. I usually love greasy little holes-in-the-wall, but this was definitely an exception. They obviously put no thought or effort into any of their dishes. Everything is exactly the same--same limp lettuce, same slightly stale shredded cheese out of a bag, same canned tomatoes. I had a taco salad and my friend had a burrito. The only difference was that mine was in a bowl. The restaurant was also dingy and dark and our waitress was a bit scary as well. I agree with DL C. -- Mi Ranchito is right across the street. I have been going here since I was a kid. Some of the other reviews hinted it is the same food in all the dishes just presented different. I can not disagree with that. Although I love the chips they make them there fresh. It is like an upscale Taco Bell or Taco Via, but a very down scale Mi Ranchito. The owners and staff have been here for ever and I love it. It has been in the same little dive bar place since I was 8 years old. My husband doesn't like this place because the food goes right through him. I grew up on it and have a stomach of steel as long as there is no dairy in it. Dairy is my Kryptonite. The food is not spicy but more just tomatoey. I do like the guac and there is always beer to help the food. I think because I grew up eating this I am partial to it. I understand those that do not like it. It is a total local place that if you are a regular you are treated better and get better service, if you are not a regular, well then maybe you will or maybe you won't get good service. Incredible price, food & service! For two of us we ate for $12 ordering the specials $2 toreadors and $2 chalupas and had to much food. Even if you order one of the dinner meals it's more than enough for two people. American beers $2! This is the perfect "hole in the wall" and John was great! read more

OK so this place is a little hole in the wall that has been here forever (waitress we talked to has been here 24 years). Actually places like these are usually my favorite destinations - I am not a chain fan. One of my students recommended it so a few of us ventured in for lunch. All this guy could talk about was how different and good the chili rellenos were. Since Chili rellenos are my number one favorite Mexican food item I just had to try them. They are different - not fried in batter but wrapped in like an omelet mixture and baked. They WERE different and good. The refried beans were pretty tasty too. If you enjoy fake Mexican restaurants that puts a jar of enchilada sauce on their burritos this is the place to go to. The service sucks the waiter to 10 minutes just to get to the table. So sad. Great little restaurant but the ownership and management are SO rude. They seem more concerned with drinking and hanging out with friends than actually serving patrons. Honestly, I hate to even review this place because it was probably the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I had a number #5 which was a taco, two beef enchiladas. The shell was stale. The only thing positive I have to say is the lettuce and tomatoes were good. The sauce tasted like jar spaghetti sauce. I couldn't even finish any of it. Much better choices. I read a comment below that made me laugh. It was something along the lines of: don't come here unless you want a jar of sauce dumped on your food. I read that before I got my food and after a good 30 minutes or so when I did get my food, I understood. I got like a toreador and something else and was not impressed with the execution. Rice sprinkled there. Beans plopped there. Great puddle of red sauce and scarce cheese over my "food". What was unsettling though was that the meat looked grey under the light. Overall, the food was unimpressive. We were originally going to go to Mi Ranchito, right next door, but it was a fairly busy night. Toreador's was busy for a small restaurant too, but it beat the 45 minute wait against the latter. Some hungover/hungry Royals fans swung by. For only having one waitress (daughter), she did a great job running around the tables. Props to her for adding a star to this review. I LOVE the food, and the Nachos are made to perfection. NO processed cheese on anything! The secret is the Hot Sauce, Not too hot but has a noticeable step up. I can stile enjoy the magnificent flavor of my meal. If I want more heat, I ask for a side of jalapeños. The beer is COLD, and the Margaritas are to die for! And the service is outstanding.
