Stuck in Queenstown because of a broken rim during a bicycle trip through NZ during the Chinese New Year I really absolutely had a great time. One cannot be further away from NZ than when one has no choice but to stay in Queenstown surrounded by masses of tourists taken care of by a total tourism industry.
It took the team of Torpedo 7 more than a week to replace the rims of my bike because allegedly - as the mechanics of T7 seem to think - 26 inch rims are not in use anymore and who in the whole wide world still uses rim brakes. Well I can tell you who, the whole wide world basically wherever biking is not limited to offroad trails and downhill or other action sports, where a bicycle is simply considered a daily means of transport.
Anyway, the rims I normally use cost 30 Euros each which should be roughly 45 NZ$. Guess what: In total I was charged more than 300 $ just for the rims! (I cannot give you the exact number anymore because the receipt was already hard to read when I got it.) Obviously the team of Torpedo 7 thought it wise and appropriate to make me a special offer/ price which naturally I couldn't refuse as there are not many options.
On top of everything the eccentric tappet of the bottom bracket of my bike was replaced the wrong way around. Furthermore the front wheel came off after the first 20 km on my expensive new rims because a mechanic had forgotten to put a safety washer back into its place. Good that I had checked my wheels before going down that mountain pass. Just as well as one pair of my brake shoes had to be totally replaced because the original brake shoe which allows the simple replacement of separate brake pads had been thrown away by the shop.
I will have to rectify the situation of my bike at my own expense naturally as the Torpedo 7 shop in Christchurch wasn't able to improve on the situation later on either.
Thank you for the many apologies. Very helpful!
My bike trip is over unfortunately. The memories of incompetent bike mechanics remain. I cannot recommend Torpedo 7. But then, this conclusion does not come as a surprise to you. read more
