This is a very small shop, but they had what I needed--thick black socks, merino wool base layer black shirt and a thick merino knit black hoodie and track pants. I recently arrived in New Zealand for three weeks and it was much colder than I expected. The employees were helpful and gave me a 20% discount for signing up with customer rewards. I wore the pants three times before I noticed how rough the pocket zipper pulls were--they tore the skin off my fingers. But they were warm and comfortable. New to NZ and wanting to start hiking I stopped in (this is one of many outdoor equipment stores here in Q'Town. After some delay a clerk offered to help. Explained a bit about the options and sizing. I mentioned a pressure point at the ankle and he assured me they'd break in; I want the ankles snug for support on climbs. Next day I wore them for a walk (not even a hike!) and the pressure was unremitting The boots left pressure marks on both lower legs. And my feet ache from trying to compensate. The return policy is invalid after they're worn so I'm out of luck. I should have known from the casual inattention no to trust his answer. End result: lackluster service, bad quality product and no recourse for me. They should stand behind what they sell. No one can anticipate such a poor wearing experience by leaving them in the box. Macpac is a solid product. I like what I bought. Most of the staff was very nice. The shopping experience because of one staff member, Santillan, was the downside of the store. Preface: Really like the Macpac product offerings. Very technical and comfortable! Had an issue with the management. The manager at the time was named Santillan. I bought a somewhat expensive jacket at $199 on spring sale to $145. Had trouble finding which jacket I wanted because there was new styles and different technical additions to each. I found one based on the employee's opinions. Santillan rang me up and seemed like he was having a tough day from his demeanor(quick, short answers, and no smiles). I wore the jacket for a couple of minutes around town and got too hot in it. We booked a tour and I ended up carrying it for the duration of the tour(~2hrs). I went back to the store to exchange the jacket for a lighter weight and an employee who helped me previously said "No problem", assisted me in choosing a comparable one I liked, and proceeded to process the exchange. Santillan saw me and shouted a sharp "NO!" to his employee from across the store, "I saw him wearing that around town". I told him It was only for a couple hours and I was dissatisfied with the product. I asked him if I could speak to the manager to resolve this, he responded he was the manager. So, I preceded to ask for the corporate contact(which i will also be contacting). He said "you can have it, but they won't help you". I was only trying to exchange for similar product and there was no wear and tear or damage of any type to the product(Including the original tags and receipt with the timestamp of only a couple hours earlier). I didn't feel this was good service or good representation of the brand. I've ended up enjoying the jacket and the quality of the materials used, but would not recommend giving this manager the in-store revenue. read more
