On our recent trip to London, four of us went to the Steak Restaurant, on the recommendation of…read moresomeone recently relocated from California. I mention this because we have some amazing steak restaurants in SoCal. The restaurant had several families dining, and had a nice level of background chatter. Our chef took the time to come speak with us, recommend cuts of beef and generally go over our options. This was a lovely surprise as this rarely happens. We started with "fall off the bone" ribs and the Hallumi - (squeaky cheese - wish I could find this here in SoCal... if anyone reading this knows a place... please let me know!) We ordered rib eye steaks, I had the filet... with sides of creamed spinach/truffle fries and Mac and cheese. Everything was cooked to our liking, and the chef came back out to check on us. We actually ended up going back again just because the food and service were great. Look forward to visiting again! (Oooh... if you go, ask for their salts.. I liked the Merlot infused one)

I courteously informed the establishment prior to the time we were expected. No problem as far as I was concerned. Last week I visited the place to book for a large gathering and was confronted by Bob owner manager I believe who told me I was not welcome and refused to take my booking. From previous experience with this place I can only assume it has become a mad house not a steak house. I have no idea why I was not able to book but only can assume the owners must think they are some sort of special reserve of only certain people. They are a most unusual restaurant I certainly will never spend my money here as I do not need them as much as they need customers. Maybe it's my aftershave.

Outside of the pedestrian menu options, they give you a menu of the day's beef, an assortment of sharing rib eyes, porterhouses and chateaubriands, with the size and recommended number of people very clear. Our ribeye (cote de beouf) was incredible, cooked perfectly as ordered with a great char. Nice wine list with good options by the glass, 500 ML carafe or bottle. The only downside was a very, very limited number of starter options. Also nice to get out of the tourist area but stilll only a 10 min walk from the city centre. Hope to get back to Oxford again for another visit.

The salad buffet were served by staff (due to the 'Rona), and at times had the queue to get served was right to the back of the restaurant. The server was giving out very small amounts meaning many people kept going back up several times, which seemed counterproductive. The salad bar had lots of choice though and was well tasty. One of the meat men had a right attitude when serving and you felt you were inconveniencing him getting served. Quite a while between meat options coming up. This place sounded so good! I found it via Tastecard because they offer (at time of review) a 50%…read morediscount - even for large groups - which is pretty awesome. My beef with this place (excuse the pun) was the terrible service. I had initially booked for 10, but on the day called to see if we could reduce the number and arrive a bit earlier. The man on the phone said it wouldn't be a problem. When we arrived the waiter obviously hadn't been told because he was quite confused how to deal with our smaller group arriving early. I'll point out now that we went on a Sunday night and the place was at about 50% capacity. While we waited for a friend to arrive we decided to get starters and drinks. The bottle of wine arrived open, which is not ideal but not a major issue. The starters/sides were quite average. We shared them between us but there was no offer of plates so sharing them got messy very quickly. After we'd finished our starters the waiter asks if we could order our mains. We asked for a few minutes to check on our friend because she was due to arrive any minute, but just a minute later he's asking again because of something to do with how the kitchen organises itself. Remember, it's a Sunday and they were not busy. Thankfully my friend walked through the door at that precise moment. The saving grace of this restaurant is the wide selection of exotic meats. There are the safe options of beef and chicken or you can try wild boar, water buffalo, springbok, crocodile and more. My late friend quickly chose but at this point the waiter had almost lost attention and it was quite difficult to get him to come over (not for the first time). All mains come on a hot stone with chips and salad. The plates are very big and because he'd put 5 on us on a table for 4 we did struggle to fit them on. I like the idea of the hot stone but it is a low-effort meal for the kitchen who only need to cook chips and heat the stone. For this reason I cannot fathom why the waiter was pressuring us into ordering our mains befroe our final diner had arrived. On the plus side, my water buffalo was good, but since I was the one cooking it I'm not sure how much credit they deserve. The Tastecard discount made it worthwhile, however, everything but the meat was average at best and the service was appalling.
