Gord and I did an "Intro to 3-D Printing" workshop yesterday afternoon, which was interesting. It…read morewas 1.5 hours and free through the Toronto Library. We didn't do any actual printing (it takes too long) but Alex, our instructor, did a small fighter jet, which he gave to Gord. Alex explained how 3-D works and talked about all the things you can do. He also had us play around the software. You can use their 3-D printing facilities and just pay for the cost of the material (which seems really cheap).

When you walk in you can see that the library is being built to serve the new condos still going up in the area. The building itself fits in very well with glass and concrete all around. The book selection is very good, with new books that look clean and easy to browse, almost bookstore like. There is also ample seating all around to read some of your titles and relax, as well as a dedicated study area with an enclosed quieter area, and a place to plug in a laptop. What is most interesting about the facility are the digital innovation labs. They have a 3D printer ready to use, charging a nominal fee with a 2 hour limit on use. They also have a music studio inside along with a green screen and video cameras for music and video production. There are also Macs available with Final Cut Pro and all the requisite Mac software. If you're wondering where your taxpayer dollars are going then come take a look to see the good work that's been put into this library. I intend to break in some of these titles and equipment!

Came here on a Wednesday night with my brother as he wanted to quickly print some papers and for…read moresome reason the librarian there made the process quite complicated. He wanted to print double sided and she told him that the quickest way was printing and uploading the files to his phone and printing from there. But 10 minutes from closing only then was he told by other librarians that he could only print double sided through the library's computers. Overall this was a frustrating experience as the process for printing paper was made complicated by the initial librarian that we talked to.

I like a good library. I have happy memories getting my first library card and spending hours…read morereading in library growing up in the Beaches area of Toronto. I then moved to borrowing books and music. I stopped going to library a few years ago. Work and life can do that. I recently decided that, after working in Mississauga for nearly eight years, it was time to get a Mississauga library card. My first attempt was trying to get one at Port Credit Library. I was there for the Mississauga Ribfest. Kill two birds with one stone, right? Before I went there, I looked at the Mississauga Library's site. It said that you can get a free library card if you work or live in Mississauga. Great! It also said that you needed to present your driver's licence to prove that you are you. I went there and talked to two library staff. Both stated that I needed to prove that I work in Mississauga with a paystub. The site never said that, so I was a bit bummed not getting a card that night. Luckily, stuffing my face with ribs, cornbread, and baked beans eased the pain. The following week, I visited the Burnhamthorpe branch, which is the closest one to my workplace. There is plenty of parking on a Friday night. I parked and walked in. I had a helpful woman handle opening a library card account for me. I presented my letter of employment (my paystub defaults to the Montreal office, so I needed to prove that I am employed in Mississauga with this letter). The key is to make sure that you letter spells out the employer's address. I was then asked to present my driver's licence. A few minutes later, I had a new library card. The woman was great at explaining to me all the important things like fines, book renewals, and my online account. I appreciated it. The unfortunate part was that I only had fifteen minutes to browse around the library. It closes at 6 pm on Fridays. I managed to find the cookbook section (not a huge surprise that food resonates with me), and found a ketogenic cookbook. I grabbed it and went to check it out. The same woman was helpful to step me through the self-signout process. The downside was that my book had an issue being signed out, so she needed to manually step in and check it out for me. I will need to give the self-signout process another go. I liked how spacious this library felt when I first walked in. I will need to come back and browse the entire library when it isn't about to close. (285)
