I enjoy the Toronto Public Library in general, it's a wonderful resource for which I'm so thankful. The Brookbanks branch meets the basic requirements for a good library; a children's section with a good collection of books and cd's; a couple of toddler tables and chairs, some sensory toys.
I like the fact that in addition to the stairs, there's a ramp going up to the upper floor, where there's more books and a couple of PC's, also a teen area at the corner by the window.
And now for the not so positive part of my review:
To go to the washrooms, there's a huge staircase down to the basement level. Which kind of makes me nervous every time my 1 year old momentarily wonders out of sight. There's no barrier of any kind to prevent small children from attempting to go down those stairs. Also, I'm not sure there's actually wheelchair access to go downstairs.
Another negative: staff. The last time I went there, just this week, only one librarian was working in the front area. I thought to myself wow, is the library cutting down on staff? Because it was actually really busy and then there's this young librarian guy that appeared so overwhelmed by everything that he was coming off as rude and impatient to people that came up to the from desk. Like the guy needed to seriously take a break and chill out as he was ignoring some, and talking down to others. Yes, there was a young boy waiting to check out several items, and the librarian ignored him for quite a while, even choosing to ask a lady that was standing about 5 feet behind this boy "can I help you?". It was hard to watch!!!
It was probably the first time I'd seen such disturbing scenes at the hands of a TPL staff member. People like that should not be working in such environments!
By the way, I noticed that two lady librarians were in the back room. Maybe they were on break? Doing other duties? Who knows?
In general though, I must say that TPL staff seem to have great customer service and for me this experience was astounding, to say the least. read more
