I spent 15.5 hrs in the ER in excruciating pain. I saw three docs, was misdiagnosed, I had no food, sleep or IV and believe it or not, I was DENIED WATER when I asked for it after none for 14 hrs. I actually had to beg and the attendant had to ask PERMISSION to give me half a cup of water. Everyone else in the waiting room had IV except me and I was there more than twice as long as anybody else, because they FORGOT ABOUT ME! The doctor I saw diminished the pain that I was in by telling me that she has been through labour. My pain was specifically male and she didn't have the parts to understand my pain. That is bad care. I went to the ER of Toronto General Hospital last week. Although I spent 7 hours there and came out at 1:00 am, I still think it was a very professional hospital. I did not have a family doctor so I had no choice but went to ER. Why did I think they are professional? Because what brought me there was my heart, the first nurse did triage for me and just let me do some tests first before other patients who might come before me. They even let me in the waiting room first. However, after finding that I was not in danger, I started waiting in the waiting room. They just started to tackle other patients with higher priority. The doctor finally came and explain all my test results clearly. I noticed many people were annoyed because they had waited for so long but I did not feel bad waiting for 7 hours. I knew that is an ER, there were patients who need help far more than the ones who could still complain about waiting too long. read more

If you have to deal with Dr. Jane Heggie, run. She is not professional with her communication style and is not properly trained to deal with complex family dynamics when a family member is dying. As a solution, I tried reaching out to the Patient Relations Department of Toronto General Hospital (director Jane Ballantyne) but found the department inacessible for these reasons: a) They have no public office for people to visit (just a two-page pamphlet in the lobby which you are referred to over and over) b) They don't answer their telephone line, it receives messages only, and rarely does the team reply to emails in a timely manner, if at all c) They offer very limited solutions to problems, and rarely when they do, it is without closure or promised improvement for future patients and patient families Please be careful. read more

I was there for 5 weeks and they couldn't find out what's wrong with me, i'm in continuous pain now and my breathing is affected. I went back due to intense spinal pain and right out of the doctors mouth he said "We can't help you" Horrible place, after 5 weeks I left because I needed care and they just stalled and didn't do any further testing and now I'm in excrutiating pain and almost about to pass out due to neck muscle spasms as my condition continues to get worse. read more

ER waiting times are literally overnight - they have a McDonald's style "time served board" that checks overnight admissions against a 7am treatment benchmark ... awesome. And this isn't because of the number of patients (didn't see many) or the number of nurses/admin staff (saw many). Will say that one - just one, but glad she was there - was very nice and tried to keep things going, but we had a time sensitive emergency that didn't get treated at all. After several hours, and by then the longer term damage had been done, never did see a doctor. Not even passing by let alone getting care. Can't say this is the all the hospital's fault, I'm going to guess they're badly underfunded, but whether it's the network, the government, or some other reason if you need ER treatment go elsewhere. Toronto Western at least has a lot more patient care. Two ER visits in the last two years so hoping I've hit the limit on this segment - but if you have a choice avoid the ER (altogether ideally) at TGH, and if you don't, be ready for an overnight stay with very little in the way of updates or support. read more

I was taken to Toronto General by ambulance. The great care started from the moment I entered the ER. The nurses and doctors took the time to explain everything to me. I was admitted and moved to a room and the wonderful care continued. I cannot thank the staff enough for everything they do. Always cheerful and caring after the last 2 years of Covid it's amazing how they can still do it. Too many people criticize the wait times, lack of care they were provided, etc but I feel that it comes down to the gov'ts lack of funding so these people can do their jobs with everything they need to do it. Broke my foot and could not walk correctly. Arrived stumbling into emergency and fell over three times as I tried to get to admistration. Nobody would help me despite clearly struggling, hospital workers and even people just looked at me uncomfortably. The administrator then treated me as though she were suspicious I was addicted to drugs...I dont even take tylenol...she asked me three times if I took drugs and with disbelief each time. The Doctor also talked to me with suspicion and also repeatedly asked if I was on drugs. Got an x-ray and I had multiple fractures throughout my foot...I had tripped on a flight of stairs and landed badly. I had multiple broken bones. The doctor then refused to prescribe me anything for pain relief...was told he had to be cautious of who he gave it to..He likely still thought I was on hard drugs. This experience was torture, I never want to go back there again. Update: I recently reviewed this experience with my family doctor and together we are making a formal complaint against the hospital. I've been going here for years but never fully able to speak my mind about this hospital, for starters I was born with a condition that requires me to be monitored by a doctor. I was sent to UHN by SickKids after I came of age. My first Dr laughed when hearing me use the word homogenous, in its proper context, then when I asked what was so funny, I was told most of the people that come over from sick kids, "usually don't know such big words". Flash forward to another Dr, the second Dr, Found it suitable to talk Very Very Slow to me. The next offensive interaction came after I had a stroke before which a Dr. who I will call Dr.T sent me for a special type of MRI, I knew I should've been alarmed when arriving and the waiting area reception people didn't even know this test was happening, let alone having to sign a waiver. But that is beside the point, the next offensive interaction(and anyone with even the slightest knowledge of how the human body works would know he was full of scatological matter) I was told that the test dilated the blood vessels, something Dr.T told me I wouldn't be able to do but the test didn't dilate the vessels in my neck, only the ones in my brain, now I know these Dr's think low of me but wow! So I explained to him why he was wrong, when we breathe in anything it goes to the lungs and then our heart which distributes it to the rest of the body, then as I get up to leave the feckless member of UHN decides it's time to call security. That isn't even mentioning the time a neurologist got visibly mad because I wouldn't agree to use M.R.I dye. read more

Terrible with the way they treat families of patients who have lost a loved one. Imagine being called down because your sister passed and they don't let you in and being told that They're hospital isn't a lobby. Terrible service, poor communication between door workers treating my family members with such disrespect. Families who have lost their loved ones don't want to be dealing with this when they come in. Throughout the week we were told that we were all allowed in to see our loved one who passed. Absolutely filthy. ER bathroom toilet had pubic hair stuck to the seat and my gown had an old blood stain on it. Mystery stains on the cabinets and walls of the exam room. Dust on the floors. Cobwebs on a light fixture. Doctors were completely dismissive, but that's standard for any ER. My main problem was the unhygienic conditions. The good news is I'm not dead! The bad news is a lot of people who were also waiting with me looked like they were about two steps away from that... I had a terrible cough this autumn that resulted in a lot of side pain. Assuming it was a broken rib but wanting to make sure, I waltzed in around noon on a bright and sunny Thursday afternoon. It's important to note that they have you sign in at "stage one", and this was helpful because you note the time you arrived, which helped me know how much of my life I was wasting the rest of the afternoon. If communal germs and potential health risks ain't your jam, emergency rooms are not for you. From the pencil you use to sign in, to the very tiny communal waiting rooms with people barfing here and there and everywhere, to the bathrooms with no automatic door open (yo, for someone whose problem was pain in my side, these heavy doors were not amusing), even the out-in-the-open shelf for everyone's pee....it's a village, my friends, and you're going to be very close to everyone by the end of your journey. So I was there for about 3 1/2 hours. If you are not someone who is familiar with Canadian health care and/or the English language, I am quite certain you will be lost and confused at multiple points. It's very self-directed care - know where to go, know what to ask, remember what you're doing, etc. My biggest complaint was that after registration (step two), I told the woman, "I'm just going to use the restroom before I go in," and she said, "Ok!" Then I went into the waiting room, a nurse came in and handed me a cup for urine sample -UHM I LITERALLY JUST WENT. They don't have water easily accessible so if you have time before you go in, grab yourself a snack, some water and a book - and a phone charger, their phone charger station is a hot mess. I would have liked if they kept people who were CLEARLY actively bleeding or ill in a separate room from the rest of us less-severe cases, but, I spent $0 and I got an xray and some pain meds so...you take the good with the bad. read more

It was like being in a torture chamber. They would not give me my vital medication and I was in withdrawal from not having the medication that I have been taking for over 20 years. I could not get well without my medication. My blood pressure was so high. They refused to give me my BP medication. They refused to give me my proper pain medication which I have been taking for over 20 years. I was suffering from that as well. Finally, I was so glad that the paramedics grabbed my blister pack on the way out, so I took my own medication. Thank God, I could have died without having my Bood Pressure meds when my blood pressure was so high. After I took my own medication the blood pressure went down. Also, I had some of my pain medication in my purse so I took that. When I complained about my medication they just discharged me early instead of giving me my meds. I had to go home, sick and I had to clean up all the mess of vomiting and crap, that was all over my apartment. They only gave me 1/4 of my regular medication and was torture believe me. Don't go to this hospital, it's just a torture chamber. Horrible, horrible horrible. I was not there to have my medication changed and it really was not up to them to do that. I was trying to get well and the only way I could do that was to take my medication. read more

Keep your donation and send it to another hospital. It's just right to start my Yelping back after recovering from an injury. I can type again yay! I was sent at Toronto Gen after a gym accident (I stepped on a speedy threadmill). Note, it was speedy so do not laugh people. Whoever said that gym is supposed to make us healthy. The experience was awful. With swollen, very painful hands, I told triage that I could not write my name. She asked me to sit down she would call me. About 20 minutes later, she called a guy that was on the list who came after me ... then looked me and said "if you want to see a doctor, you have to put your name on the list." Argument ensued. I reminded her of her previous instruction. She insisted: "if you want to see a doctor, write your name" Thank you for your compassion Miss Nurse. I was called and got registered. Helpful. I thought it would get better. Nurse came to see me and accidentally touched my wound. Ouch. She touched it with her bare hands. Told me, without any remorse or apology, that she did not see my wound. Doh. Still with swollen hands the size of a leg, I asked if there's somewhere I can put my gym bag. Sorry I had to carry it with me. Another duh. X-ray technician was great. Doctor came. Unhappy to see me. He was perhaps tired or annoyed at the girl screaming in the other room. Put a cast on my arm and let me go. He was so unhappy that i was so relieved that I was discharged. Horrible experience. read more

I recently had to go in for surgery. It was my first time having surgery, staying in a hospital, being hooked up to IV's etc but as far as I'm concerned, this hospital was incredible. I have never felt more comfortable by a group of health care professionals. From Pre-Op to post op, everyone was warm and friendly. The two nurses who took care of me throughout my stay were attentive, careful and made me feel cared for. Although I have been used to having appointments at beautiful Princess Margaret and when I went over to Toronto General to have pre-op, even with the bells and whistles gone of Princess Margret, this hospital is clean and modern. While the food is as everyone expects, you don't check in for the food! As far as after I was discharged, there are nurses that have kept in touch and have remained attentive. If you ever have any health issues which I hope you do not, Toronto General will far exceed your expectations. read more

My dad had a surgery at this hospital! Was very complicated. We were with an other doctor before and he could not decide to do the surgery because was a very complicated case. I was refer to Dr Waddell. Just an amazing doctor. Was a complicated surgery it took 12 hours but he did it. CAN'T THANK YOU HIM ENOUGH!!! And the nurses....AMAZING! They treat my father like their own father. It brings tears in my eyes when I see them taking care of him.They are so kind. They made me wait in their emergency room for five hours, only for them to brush me off, do no tests, and not even have a doctor see me. They gave me antibiotics without even making sure what was going on was an infection, and now I'm sitting at home with a rash covering my whole body, and a bottle of antibiotics for something I doubt is an infection. My family is livid. I'll never go to Toronto General ever again, and I suggest others do the same. read more

It's a hospital. Sometimes you don't a choice, but at least you'll know what you're getting into....! The place is big and laid out funny. I spent a lot of time walking around looking for things, that don't have the correct signage attached. There is also a ground floor, and a lobby and a first floor, all a few steps away from each other. It's quite confusing. I'm also surprised that the front entrance off University, there weren't proper signs to the Admittance and Registration to get my hospital card. The great thing about the card is that it's one card for all the UHN hospitals (including toronto Western and Princess Margaret) When I finally got there, i was surprised to see an archaic office that's really in need of renovation, but looks like they are working on it. I got my card quickly, but I was disappointed in the professionalism when the lady dialed a call and continued talking on the phone while processing. They also had a volunteer young kid , and all he does it hand out the cards when printed.Seems a waste of a resource. I went up to the Respirology Clinic, and it took a while to find as well. Signage needs to be improved. Dr. Shepara was super nice, attentive and helpful. Really pleased, except for the 1/2 hour wait. All additional tests are immediately entered into the system, and no need for me to carry around pieces of paper to get my next tests. Kind of odd in a good way. Went to get an xray, and it was quick less than 10 mins. Also grabbed a coffee from the Letteri. Better off going to Starbucks or Tims because it was quite watery. Their food court is quite large too with plenty of selection including Booster Juice, Subway, Bagel Stop, Pita place... read more

Its a pretty decent hospital - they have free WiFi for patients stuck here for long waits. I've had a number of appointments and a few tests done here and I usually have to wait a long time. The doctors, nurses and technicians who I've encountered here are polite and attentive. There is a distinct lack of bicycle parking nearby though. :( read more

Worst service ever. Nurse that didn't know how to put an iv in, messed up twice and had to ask another one for help. Doctors that doesn't visit their surgery patient for checkups. The nurse uses threat to get you to do something, i had spontaneous pneumothorax, and the nurse says: "i want you to walk around the halls, it's up to you but if you don't you will get pneumonia". Wtf can they study the difference between pneumothorax and pneumonia? How is it possible to get pneumonia from not walking around the hall the day i exit surgery. One nurse even messed up my antibiotics serving and had to ask other nurses for help. Do yourself a favour and stay away from this place. No hot water for drinking, and they refill your water with tap water. read more

As good as experiences in the ER can be, my visits to Toronto General have been the best (I only have St. Mikes to compare to) I have a medical condition which I was aware of prior to my visit to the ER, and one night last summer I was experiencing severe pains in my lower right abdomen. I was at a bar in the village and deducted after four hours of tolerating the pain that my appendix was going to burst. My boyfriend lead me to Women's College Hospital, a short walk from where we were beforehand. Their Emergency was closed at a bit after midnight. Toronto General was the closest hospital. We decided to walk as I drunkenly "wanted to feel the grass in between my toes for the last time". Pleasant walk, hospital is very accessible. The waiting room was ok- there are tvs and magazines for you to amuse yourself with while you wait. The patient clientele seemed to all be employed (as in not homeless) if you fear mixing with 'degenerates'. I believe I waited under an hour and was taken immediately to a bed where I was served a buffet of painkillers. It is really air conditioned, it was summer and I was only wearing shorts and a tanktop and was cold - bring a blanket to be prepared. They did lots of tests, blood work, urine tests, ultrasounds and I left at around 8:00 am. They also prescribed me a lot of pretty heavy painkillers, as they linked the pain to my pre-existing condition and wanted me to have some on hand, which I found strange that they happily handed out painkillers. They also were good in explaining precautionary measures for me, and providing me with a list of doctors who specialized in my condition who were taking patients. I came a week after as directed by the doctors I saw before with my laptop and sweatpants and had a warmer and more enjoyable experience. read more

Has to be one of the worst hospitals ever!! Came in here with my dad having stomach pains. We came in at 1030 got admitted inside around 1100 which was really fast. I thought what a great hospital with little wait times. Boy was I wrong from 11-230 not one doctor came to see my dad. I asked several times what is going on and they have no clue. All they say is there is one more person before you. For 3 and a half hours are you kidding me. I will never come here ever again. Worst mistake ever read more

Our experience at Toronto General always varies. My father used to visit the UHN chain of hospitals because he was a cancer patient at Princess Margaret just across the street. For example for emergency situations when we need the emergency room we have always been pleased and well taken care of. The nurses have always been kind, gracious, and quick to help especially when it seemed like there wasn't much they could do. They lended us shoulders to cry on in times of disparity and we even shared a few laughs upon being discharged. They were definitely very polite and always worried if there was more they could do. As for when my father would become an inpatient at Toronto General, we weren't very satisfied. The nurses would forget to bring him breakfast and lunch, when he'd ask they'd say they were figuring it out but never did. My mom ended up buying food for him more then they were actually supplying it for him. When he would be in pain and ask for pain medication they would forget to bring it. He had medications every 3 hours, sometimes they would go 6 hours without giving him anything. When my dad would ask the doctors questions they would treat him poorly saying they can't answer that or that was classified information (what do you mean??? He's the patient asking about his health???!!!). It would be really helpful that there was a Tim Hortons located inside the hospital, a pharmacy, a Starbucks, food court, even an indigo bookstore. If we were to rate the different sections of the hospital it would be a 5 stars for emergency but 1 star for inpatient admittance. read more

After living nearly seven years in Toronto, I stopped by Toronto General Hospital's Emergency Room in mid June 2017 to seek help with pain I was enduring. Located in one of Toronto's prime locations, I was surprised how quickly I was treated for care when compared to St. Michael's ER room. I was in around 5:00pm and out 7:00pm (if it was St. Michael's I would expect to be there until midnight). Nurses were extremely nice and caring. Triage nurse who helped checked me in was a doll and reception was really efficient and frirendly. Their in-house pharmacy is extremely helpful and if you're on public assistance such as OntarioWorks or ODSP, they will waive your co-pay. Highly recommended! Top notch quality healthcare. read more

In the last 18 months I've been to numerous hospitals for various tests, surgeries and procedures. Sunnybrook, St Mikes, St Joseph's, Mississauga Trillium, Humber River, and Toronto General. My worst experience was Sunnybrook, and the best was St Joseph's. I would rate TGH somewhere around number 3. No real issues when I was there but the nurses and doctors at St Joseph's are the best. read more

TERRIBLE HOSPITAL! Long story short --they MISTREATED MY DAD AND CAUSED HIM ALOT OF PAIN AND SUFFERING BEFORE HIS DEATH HERE. We saw nurses shoving food down his throat and being mistreated by nurses. My dad had so many health issues and we decided to bring him to Toronto General as he wasn't doing too well. Had we known the nurses and staff would give us a hard time to visit him, we would never have brought him there. He kept calling us and begging us to come see him. We called and spoke to Ramin the manager (floor 5B) but she was extremely rude and inconsiderate. Ramin was saying that their policy allowed us to visit the patient after 14 days but they didn't take into account that my dad was in critical condition and she referred us to patient relations who called us back when it was too late. THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO ETHICAL STANDARDS OR COMPASSION FOR THEIR PATIENTS. My dad had heart failure and he got really stressed because he was alone. These doctors should understand that my dad really needed us. We pay taxes, regardless your job is to fulfill the sick people's needs not torture them and leave without any care. I hope that our voice would be heard and this nonsense under the guise of COVID has to stop. Shame on the people on floor 5B who had caused this to happen. Been waiting for the surgery for one year, i have to do the pre surgery admission twice n each toke about 3 hours or more. First time they call this year for a surgery day the doctor cancel due to his emergency, second time they cancel due to many surgery on the same day. What upset is that they let me know that it will be cancel the afternoon before the day of surgery. I was prepare for everything for the surgery n even tell my college and it like they expect u to go to the surgery then u go to the surgery. This review is mostly for the lobby of the hospital as I've never been a patient. Compared to some of the other Hospitals nearby, Toronto General has many more food options, including a full food court on the main menu that is accessible by Mars, Sick Kids and Mount Sinai/Princess Margaret. There's also a tunnel to MaRS. The front entrance has a Druxy's sandwich restaurant across from information with just a few tables. Then there is a make your own salad restaurant, a Letterieri cofee shop (with lunch options as well), and a Nicholby's gift shop.The Nicholby's has candy, balloons, flowers, books, slippers, newspapers, lottery, and typical convenience store items. Further down the hallway is a larger foodcourt with a large seating area. The food options are vast and include a Hero Burger, Booster Juice, a chicken wing spot, a soup spot, Booster Juice, a sushi restaurant, a bagel restaurant, Subway, Mega Wraps (and... I think that's it). I had a MegaWrap - junior veggie with hummus - it was okay, but nothing special....The main attraction seemed to be the Hero Burger - it had a massive line. read more

I assisted my friend with her mom who needed to go to emergency after being at Princess Margaret hospital for some tests. They saw her in a timely manner. I have visited her since up in her room but sadly to report that no one noticed her leaving in the middle of the night while she was wondering around. Luckily security downstairs realized something was off with this older lady wondering around downstairs in her pj's. read more

TGH Is a great hospital, their customer service can be better, specially nursing, they don't seem to be happy or satisfied with there work, that's evidenced by their interactions with patients.
