Elizabeth Street, between Franklin and La Trobe, there are a handful of cheap eats, but it happened on NYE nothing is open except for Menya. I have never enter this place, it seems the biggest in size in the strip, but nothing about this place really urge me to enter. Between the two of us, we ordered 2 different type of ramen and a side of gyoza. It tasted good and acceptable. What I didn't like was the waitress started sweeping the floor when we were all still eating our meals. For a last resort, I may come back, but it wont be a hurry.....

I tried the hot spicy ramen, it was quite delicious with a nice balance of sweetness and spiciness. Too bad only a tiny bit of meat but the top-up boiled egg sort of made up for it. The fancy-looking touch screen ordering system was sluggish at times, but the waiter was friendly and patient to help me out. Worth coming back again to check out the other dishes.

So EVERY single person I know only comes to Menya for the Gyutan Don (Ox tongue rice bowl), and they do so for good reason. There is something comforting about the fact that you are eating the thinly sliced salivary gland of a cow and not wasting any bit of it. Not forgetting the fact that it tastes oh-so-good. The only other item I've tried on the menu is the Curry Chicken Don. It was thick and flavorful, with numerous chunks of chicken, carrots, and potatoes. As mentioned, the water is infused with various fruits so drink up.

Tried the Tan Tan Ramen and Ebi Don. Meals were delicious, although not completely filling, with the cost being a mix of Low to Moderately priced. A free Chinese tea is available upon being seated. Will definitely eat here again this time with the goal of finding the cheapest yet filling meal! I was kindly invited back to try Torasan again, after an initial bad experience the first time. Food: I'm pleased to say they toned down the amount of soy sauce in the veggie ramen since my first visit, leaving a flavoursome, but more well balanced broth. I actually couldn't believe how many noodles, veggies and bean sprout were in my bowl. It was such a generous portion and very filling. My other half ordered the spicy noodle ramen, he loved the lip-tingling flavour and the sweet flavour of the pork. Atmosphere/service: It's clear Torasan have come on leaps and bounds with the service. It's worth noting, they didn't know we had been invited back until the end of our visit. We were greeted pleasantly and promptly and staff were friendly and attentive throughout, taking time to ensure we understood the menu and felt happy placing our order. Food came incredibly quickly. I like the refit upstairs, which has turned some of the tables into booths, this allows a more private and intimate dining experience and would definitely make me more likely to return in the evenings. Would I recommend it: Yes, it's affordable and enjoyable. Their ramen have a lot of flavour and are really packed full of ingredients offering something different and are slightly less traditional than you would see in other places. Well worth it for the price.

Ramen. I love you so much. It's never been hard to find a tasty Tokyo style ramen joint in Melbourne - we have so many great options. This new venue underneath a Appartment block reminds me of the many ramen shops scattered around Tokyo where it's all about efficient, fast service and simple, tasty ramen. This is not super luxury or fancy ramen, the focus is much more on simple, tasty and fast eats. The menu has a few ramen choices including a very flavoursome vegetarian ramen. The signature chicken ramen is their most popular item and they also have classic pork based ramen. The sides are few with choices of Katsu, edamame and gyoza. Beers are cheap and they also offer a matcha green tea powder beer, which is very interesting and quite sweet. The venue is over two levels with a open kitchen on the ground floor and the seating upstairs. If you order takeaway there are computer screens to order. The service is amazing, very fast and friendly. I loved this place and will be back again soon.

On a windy winter night, upon arrival in Melbourne, my childhood friend decided to bring us here by tram from Southern Cross station's proximity. This restaurant has pretty simple layout and most of the furnitures are made from timber. Felt inviting upon entering the space. My childhood friend recommended the Gyu Tan Don even though she hasn't tried it yet. And my another friend decided to order soft shell crab ramen. The Gyu Tan Don was extremely flavorful. The meat was very tender and chewy. Portion was bigger than expected too. The rice was well cooked and I couldn't stop eating bite after bite. The ramen was pretty good too. Soup base wasn't too salty and the noodles were chewy. The soft shell crab was cooked perfectly as well. We were given hot green tea on the side as well. Service was excellent and the food pricing was considered reasonable. The downside of this place is the location. Not easy to remember. But overall, it was a good recommendation :)

    Torasan chicken ramen- spicy fun!

Cheap and cheerful ramen along with other yummy options like donburi, chicken katsu and more. There are only 5 ramen to choose from - spicy, vegetarian, tonkatsu, shoyu and shio. I had the Torasan ramen which is a chicken broth, minced, spicy chicken with toppings of corn, bean sprouts and green onion. They could offer more selection for toppings, as there were no add-on options. The broth was flavourful and noodles were cooked just right. This is not one of my favourite spots but I will say that you get a decent bowl for $12, friendly service and they have takeaway options. They are also open every day and up to 1am on weekends. If you need a quick fix, come here, otherwise you might be better served at other spots in the city.

Awesome place. Friendly. Nice seating upstairs in the booths. Great ramen. Cool beers. You order everything via the internal iPad system then pay at counter at the end. Loved it. Would return 100%.

Amazing rice bowls!!!!! I've been in Melbourne for 2 weeks struggling to find good spots and this was by far a great spot. I got a teriyaki rice bowl and a platter to share and it was crispy and delicious. Toshi was our server and he ran the place well! Super nice, helpful and happy! Thank you!

Reasonable prices but far from the best ramen I've ever had. Broth was more like a thin soup than true pork broth

I've been eating at Obento/Menya for half a decade and I almost always order the same thing: Gyu Tan Don.

Guys. This is the best char-siu I've ever had in my life. I…read morecould taste the char, the fire on the edges of the pork. It was appropriately fatty, but not all fat, you know? Now it's been over a year since I've had Totto (NYC, my favorite), and my tongue might be spoiled from eating bad ramen at like 5 places in Atlanta. But I am willing to say this was #1. Hakoya opened on the corner of a new "laneway" in the Upper West Side building (Lonsdale and Rose Lane) - it appears to have been open since November. There are 4 tables along the wall, with a bit of privacy from hanging dividers (noren?), as well as about 10 seats along a bar, which faces the kitchen. The menu is tight, as you should expect. I had my regular ramen order, spicy tonkatsu. You can choose your spicy - 1 pepper, 2, or 3. This nearly unnerved me and I had to ask the server for help on my decision. I played it safe and went with 2... I made the right choice. Balancing the two heats (spice and temperature), it's just enough to make you feel like you broke a sweat without actually breaking one. I always forget that the ramen being so hot makes the spice... well, spicier. A cold Sapporo kept me on the non-sweaty side of dinner. Between each seat are the accouterments you may need - soy, sesame, chili oil, garlic paste, pickled ginger - as well as wooden chopsticks (nice touch to match with the wooden spoon), napkins, and water jug and glasses. Easy. Every day there appears to be a happy hour, $4 for Sapporos between 3pm and 6pm. Highly recommend, and since I'm here for 2 weeks, I expect to be back!

For the restroom they told that I have to leave my cellphone to get a key from them!!!! Horrible service. Food was very average. And didn't taste original at all!

There is an ample selection of items: a well stocked sushi takeaway section, a deli counter to choose your own bento and what I came to try, the ramen! There are a few udon and ramen choices: veg, chicken and pork (chasiu). I opted for the pork ramen (@ $12.50) and went upstairs to wait for my order. Less than 10 minutes later my mid-sized bowl of ramen arrived. Happily, all the right elements were in place for a satisfying bowl! A generous portion of egg noodles, several tender slices of pork, a creamy rich broth, bamboo shoots, seaweed, fishcake, green onions and roasted garlic. The serving size was perfect and however filling it was I could not help but to continue to slurp it down. Staff were friendly and attentive and the space was well accommodating. It was clean and well stocked. They cater to the NAB lunch crowd so the professionalism is well matched. Prices are reasonable and I walked away very happy with my meal. I recommend the spot for your next business lunch or casual outing. It is well situated near Southern Cross Station and Etihad Stadium.
