I was debating between a "boutique motel" nearby (which means investors buy up an old motel, give it a facelift and charge 7 times more per night) and a "real motel", i.e., Topper's Motel, the genuine article. Having spent many summers crossing back and forth across the country, I have much experience with motels and Topper's is tops. Skip the boutique and stay at the real thing. Sparkling clean, this motel offers coffee-making equipment, mini-fridge, microwave and hairdryer in each room. Basic toiletries are included (hand soap, body gel and shampoo.) The beds are comfy. The bath linens are adequate, including a bath mat. The air conditioner had already been turned on at check-in, so the room was cool and comfortable. The grounds are pleasant, old-school motel, with ample parking right in front of your room. It gets hot in Taft, so the pool is a welcome respite. Cable TV is offered with hundreds of channels. It's not luxe but it is great, especially when you're saving hundreds of dollars. Highly recommended. read more

This is a review for a MOTEL and based on price + accommodations + cleanness = 3 stars We stayed one night, checking-in was fast and the staff were very polite, our stay was pleasant and the room was clean, there is a restaurant right next to the motel. This small city has other accommodations that are a lot better, but for us this motel offered a great value and stay, having the floors tiled is a great plus. Amenities offered are In room coffee maker, microwave and mini fridge Iron and ironing board Complimentary wi-fi Tiled floors, no nasty carpet Small motel size tv Parking right in front of your door This motel isn't fancy, is just a place to rest for the night and as a customary practice I always bring cleaning wipes to wipe down everything. read more

Quaint. That's the word that keeps coming to mind. The staff is very friendly and the room is clean. This place looks like it's run by a family and has character. Not the normal sterilized rooms or larger hotels. I would stay here again when passing through for sure. My only "issues" are mild. The lights on the outside of the building are far too bright. Light pollution is a real thing. Also, the bed was a bit hard. Other than that this place was a good choice for our family. read more

What a sweet little motel in the middle of the California oil fields. We had a long, aesthetically stunning day..from the Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White mountains, down to Big Pine across the Eastern border of the Sierra, only to skirt the Sequoia Natn'l Forest to Lake Isabella (everywhere was booked) so, onto to Bakersfield. We drove the Canyon skirting the Kern River (breathtaking) but..Where is a cute, clean local motel? Somehow we found The Topper in Taft. Late afternoon traffic and fatigue brought us to this sweet gem. Sam, the manager, was personable and so welcoming. The room, while non-descript on the outside, was spotlessly clean inside. Every inch..and we're picky. What a lovely little haven, the perfect way to end a beautiful day. We'll stay here again. read more

I've stayed here often as pit stop motel going between LA and SF. Its a weird little motel that looks frozen in time. Like a set from some film noir movie. Usually the least expensive of the motels in Taft. Unlike some cheap places it has never felt unsafe, it is just very basic motel in a very small town. The rooms are small, good for two people. I late stayed there on 12/29/09 and the rooms where clean, bathroom was clean, and check-in was quick. read more

The Topper is great, the rooms are recently remodeled with new showers and tile floors. The rooms feel like you're staying in a brand new hotel. The parking area is inside the courtyard and protected from passing thieves. It's a favorite place to stay for oil workers and skydiver tourists. The pool is the best feature i think, its super deep, open late, and clean. It's a good place to drink a beer with workmates after your shift. The owners are super cool and will accommodate anything you need. Oh an there is on site laundry which is very nice. From the outside it looks a little run down but i think that keeps the room rates low. They are currently remodeling it and cleaning up the property so i think this will be the place to stay in taft. Almost forgot, there is a restaurant there too with a full bar, super awesome to grab a margarita then hit the pool after work. read more

If you are looking for a very basic stay in Taft, this looks like it could be it. Be aware though that the cleanliness is less than ok - we had brown stains in the toilet left from the last visitor, ugh! Top blankets were not clean (sheets were), everything else very basic but ok. read more

Finally a decent priced motel that was clean and quiet and near good places to eat. I checked in here after a long day driving south along Highway 33 through central California and was pleased to find the tiled floors instead of the usual dirty carpeting featured in many other motels. And it was under $50 which these days is a miracle. Since I was simply moving on the next morning I didn't need anything fancy but clean and quiet and it fit the bill. And there is a great old Fox movie theater in Taft still open and showing the latest movies with very comfortable leg room. read more

Best place to stay in the area!!! Our flight was delayed and we didn't arrive until 3am. We called in advance to let them know and they assured us that regardless of the arrival time someone would be there to check us in. Check in went smooth and the owner was friendly. The rooms were very clean!! The tile floor was a huge relief to see there was no sticky carpet or smell and you could tell the linen was clean. We would leave for the afternoon and every day we would come back to a clean room the service was great. There's a pool and a restaurant attached to the hotel which was very convenient. The food at the restaurant is really good. I've recommended Toppers to others visiting the area. read more

Room has view of the parking lot, and the exterior is run down, but for $55 (two double beds), it is a deal. There is a good Mexican restaurant next door. Awful! The worst place I've ever stayed. Super dirty and really bad smell! NEVER again.

The rooms are simple, safe,modern and clean. I've stay here every time I'm in Taft which is once a week. Management has always been easy to get along with and I've never heard any of my neighbors. This motel feels very safe. The attached restaurant is a plus for those of you who like Mexican food. read more

This motel seems to have been newly renovated in a big way. The rooms are small and basic but very nice. Lots of nice touches. Fridge, microwave , hair dryer. Bathrooms are very nice. Good deal for the money. I come to Taft here for oil field work. read more

It's unfair for me to rate Toppers, because I haven't stayed there, but my grandparents had no complaints long ago. Brad F. is correct about the time warp. I grew up in Taft between 1949 and 1961. Toppers was always there in the same building. The restaurant was a good choice for your prom date. read more

I did not like this motel, Room was large, but bathroom tiny. You could see daylight around the AC unit.

Beautiful clean room, loved all the amenities. Can't believe the price. Would stay anytime, very friendly staff, I highly recommend this quaint motel. read more
