An interesting shop that is a far cry from Union Square, the Embarcadero, the Cannery, Ghiradelli Square or even Union Street. Beautifully ("tastefully") displaying items of stationary and related paraphernalia, mostly made in Japan, I believe. I wound up buying a retractable pencil for $20. The workmanship looked very good, a reminder of quality and an era when there was less emphasis on speed, productivity, quantity... It would be nice to have had a (brightly colored) case for it (what they did have in the store was too big). I promptly misplaced the pencil only a few days after I returned to Seattle. Love, love, love this store! This is our first time visiting Topdrawer on Valencia Street in the Mission District of San Francisco and it did not disappoint. The visual merchandising is satisfying - very organized and thoughtful. Speaking of thoughtful, the staff were exactly that in addition to being kind, knowledgeable and giving us the right amount of attention while also giving us space to browse and enjoy the store. I unfortunately had a poor experience at Topdrawer and will not buy anything from them again. If you order things online, you can't return them at a store, which is such a terrible consumer experience. And, they don't pay for free return shipping. I actually LOST money on a purchase here because I was not happy with an item and had to return it. It also seems like no one is trained on these processes (online customer service vs. in-store employees) and I would get mixed information, wasting my time and creating even more hassle. read more

The staff is attentive, friendly, and extremely helpful. I purchased a small, photo album that was surprisingly affordable at just under $20. I wish my house looked like this. Pros: beautiful, inviting store layout. Cons: I can't afford too much in here. As a visitor to SF, I really enjoyed being in this shop. The service was polite, courteous, and friendly. The items in the store all had their own visual space which makes products easy to interact with and minimizes crowding. I also noted that because the store is not jamming every conceivable version of a product, it makes choosing something that much easier. The person working here was highly knowledgeable on their inventory and as you walk toward what you're looking for, you will be distracted by all the pretty things. This will happen again when you're paying at the counter. There were so many items in here I wanted to touch and take home such as the handmade paper notebooks and the painting supplies. But alas, I have but a pauper's income. C'est la vie. read more

Very top shelf (drawer) stuff! ;) I like this store. I have only been here twice, but both times I brought something. First time was pre-COVID when my friend and her hubby came to visit us and wanted to go bar-hopping, so we started in the Mission and I took them to a few bars, restaurants, and a brewery here within our city limit. Obviously, we waltzed in here after some food and drinks next door at Lolo. Brought a cute bento lunch box. This time, I walked into here with my hubby and saw some cool wallets by Bellroy, bags, pens, and other well-designed gadgets. What I especially like are the cute Japanese postcards. I stumbled upon this place while walking to Ritual to get coffee and had to stop there at Topdrawer and take a peek through the windows because it seemed to have a lot of cool stuff! I wish it would open before 11am so that I could grab my coffee from Ritual and then come to this place next. After a few attempts, I finally had a chance to check this place out. I love so many things here and anything made in Japan really caught my eyes. If you love pens, gel pens, pencils or like to collect cards and notebooks, this place is your heaven! I also like their Japanese slippers/socks, they are so cozy and cute. Just wish they were cheaper. I am also happy that they carry my favorite brands like Fuji (they have Fujifilm Instax) and Native Union (those fancy phone chargers). I've purchased gel pens and cards from here and would love to revisit when I'm in the city! If you like shopping at Muji, this one might be a good place for you as well. I love this store! Topdrawer carries Japanese-meets-American goods: A wide variety of bento boxes, cookbooks, glass frames, miniature watercolor kits, oodles of different types of pens, interesting travel/ camping items, stationary, etc. They don't carry the same items forever, so if I see something there that I like, I have learned from experience that I shouldn't expect it to be there the next time I visit the store. The prices aren't cheap, but they are the same price as you'd find online for the same item...I've checked! The store itself is 100% WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE, which is actually somewhat unique for smaller stores, which often crowd aisles with bins or baskets on the floor. The staff is incredibly helpful, polite, and genuinely friendly. They make it a pleasure to shop here! For me, this is a great place to shop for gifts for so many people in my life, from my mother the artist, to my husband the gadget guy, to my bento-obsessed friend! I am definitely glad it has joined the landscape of this neighborhood! read more

A place to start a long pleasurable addiction to Japanese stationary. It's international too but the never stock garbage. Pens books and paper are so pleasurable and they attract people who care about book spines and beautiful craftsmanship. Went in to get my daughter a quick gift for Christmas and they didn't have the color I was looking for. Liz Gartner, the store manager, assured me they could get it to me by the next week. I'm from Fremont and couldn't get back into the city due to work. To my surprise, it was gift wrapped and mailed to me that night and was dropped off the next morning. Wow!!
