This week, Marsha sent my sister an email stating that she was cancelling my sister's reservation for another wedding of 350 guests. Apparently someone is being deployed, and my sister's date was the only one that worked. I'm sorry, WHAT? The entire point of putting a deposit down on a date is so that someone else cannot book it out from under you. Not only that, but the least she could have done was called my sister instead of leaving it up to email. What if it had gone to spam? Additionally, she should have called around to other caterers to see who was available on that date, and then referred my sister to them (instead of making my sister scramble to find someone else). If I'm being REALLY honest, Marsha should have referred this other party to another caterer, but this one was going to make her more money than my sister's, so screw the smaller wedding, right? Unless you like to play things fast and loose when it comes to wedding planning, book a different caterer. She's clearly only driven by bigger paydays and will leave you high and dry at the drop of the hat.

And The Maridor is the perfect example. This historic mansion, built in 1916 and restored many years later, received its name from its its third owner, Marion Augustus Smyth, President of National Business College who re-named the home "Maridor" after his two children, Marion and Dorothy. Maridor. It is located in the highly regarded area of the historic Grandin Village, in Roanoke, Virginia. Established in 1993, The Maridor offers a versatile event space for weddings, corporate functions, and social gatherings. And also has a very unique restaurant that currently is open Wednesdays through Fridays from 4:00 to 9pm. One can book a reservation through their website to dine in either the Restaurant, the Bar, the Dining Room, or the Patio, and enjoy some excellent cuisine from Director and Executive Chef Seth who offers southern-style cooking with International comfort food flavors. What he has created is a place with a diverse menu, where one can go and dine in, enjoying the history of the house with some nice food and drinks at a reasonable price. With Seth's background in Asian cuisine from his Food Truck days, he created a menu with two sides: A West Side and an East Side, providing in it something for everyone's tastes. But his ultimate vision is to create unforgettable dining experiences that inspire and delight his guests. With this amazing background information, I was tempted to go try it out, and thought of all the other restaurants I had discovered in this same way. By driving by them several times until I decided it was time to go experience what's inside. I made a reservation for a Friday at 6:30 pm. When I arrived the house was so big I couldn't find thr entrance at first, but I phoned them and they told me I was at the right place and how to reach the front door. I was warmly greeted by a charming lady with a great personality and taking to the dining room of the house. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review for a better sense of the feel of this restaurant. I was seated at the table of my choice. My server Sharon had the bartender make me a Mocktail to start off with and I had a treat ordering from the menu. For appetizer some Crab Rangoons, followed by a Classic Shrimp Cocktail, and Rockefeller Oysters. As the main course, the Beef Brisket Bao Buns, and for dessert, I later order their Maple Pecan Bourbon Bread Pudding. My server came to check on my at the right times and to fill me in with the History of this house and restaurant and I had a one of a kind dining experience. I highly recommend this place for a couple's night out, or to dine with family and friends. The place provides a comfortable yet distinguish environment in which to enjoy quality time with your loved ones.

Plenty of parking and they had people in golf carts ferrying people up the hill to the barn on request. We had a great time and everything was beautiful. Where do I even start about Devon!?…read more Somewhere along the line in wedding planning, I realized that for me one of the most important decisions I would be making about my wedding was the photographer. I had no idea it would be so important to me until we started looking at photographers and I was trying to envision how our wedding day would look and how it would be captured and WOW Devon totally checked that box in the best way possible! Every interaction my husband or I had with Devon was positive, I immediately felt comfortable with her, which is super important in a photographer! She completely put my mind at ease with her confidence and professionalism. She was also super flexible on timeline when we didn't quite have that figured out yet, and let us add an extra hour a few weeks before the big day! The day of the wedding, Devon was super great at communicating, making everyone comfortable, and making an effort to know the names of the Bridal Party and being engaging. We even finished taking all the pictures ahead of schedule and used the extra time to take more shots that were important to us! As for the results - Devon sent us around 20 sneak peek pictures within a week of our wedding date - SUCH a wonderful glimpse of her work and a happy reminder of our wedding day. We received all of the photos exactly 1 month after our wedding (2 weeks ahead of schedule) and let me tell you: they exceeded all expectations! I still have to dig into them and pick favorites and share them and print them and all that fun stuff but Devon captured the day absolutely perfectly!! I love the feel of the photos and the lighting - every background we took pictures against turned out beautifully! Devon also captured the feel and emotion of the wedding, the life of the wedding. The moments she captured are priceless - a glance between my husband and I, an exchange with a bridesmaid, our guests laughing at a joke, an enthusiastically dancing couple- all gorgeous candid moments that I am so glad we can look back on! Devon even managed to follow my husband and I around the room as we chatted with our guests and we had absolutely no idea she was there - the pictures were a pleasant surprise! In summary: Devon is fantastic. Every aspect about the photos is brilliant and I am so glad she was able to capture so many perfect moments. Every other venue was double the cost, and still didn't compare. From the breathtaking Mountain View's to the immaculate getting-ready suites, we knew right away this was the one. The staff was kind, responsive, and helpful from the very beginning, and they worked with us to book immediately after our tour. We ended up driving 2.5 hours for our wedding here, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was booked far in advance (for good reason!), so we didn't get our original date -- but we were thrilled just to get in. We ended up with a July wedding and the weather was perfect. Yes, it was warm, but we planned ahead with fans as favors, and no one cared once they saw the view. The venue itself is clean, beautifully maintained, and laid out so thoughtfully. The getting-ready spaces for both the guys and girls were by far the nicest of any venue we toured. Everything felt peaceful, elegant, and easy. Our guests were in awe -- they made a weekend of it and kept telling us it was the best wedding they'd ever been to. Out of 200 invited, about 120 came, and the entire day felt just right. If you're looking for a venue that's stunning, organized, and elegant -- without spending $10k just to book it -- Cedar Oaks Farm is absolutely the one. I recommend it to anyone who wants the perfect view and a flawless experience.
