Katie joined our family in 2007 and Tanner came along in 2008. We rescued both and have found that rescue dogs usually come with an issue or two. They're kinda like people in that way...everybody's got something that isn't quite right. You know what I mean? Anyhow, Katie had a bump that was diagnosed as a skin cyst from the day that we met her. It always concerned us and we would bring it up at every visit with our former veterinarian. The concern was always brushed off. Fast forward four years to when the bump turned into a protruding mass in the matter of a day. My husband and son rushed Katie in to the 24 hour ER only to learn that Katie had cancer and we needed to put her down. Our second option was a 20% survival rate on an $8,000+ surgery. That was out of the question. The following morning, I learned about Dr. Rycoff from a friend of my moms. I learned that she took a holistic approach and I immediately decided that a second opinion couldn't hurt. And what an opinion that was! Dr. Rycoff immediately understood our concerns - we didn't want Katie to be uncomfortable, but she was young and if there was a way to treat her that was within reason that we would explore those options. Well, there was a reasonable alternative and Dr. Rycoff made no promises, but after Katie's treatments, she was right back to her old self and the tennis ball sized mass was gone! Katie still technically has cancer, but we keep a close eye on her and she has needed another treatment since the first round, but here we are two years later and our happy, lovable dog is living comfortably thanks to an alternative approach that was reasonable on the pocketbook. Tanner ended up also having a lump. But since the treatment is reasonable and wouldn't hurt him even if it wasn't cancer, we treated that too. It's all cleared up now! Now, the flip side. Yes, the actual office is not somewhere I would eat a meal. It's home to cats and dogs. It's a spot that's visited daily by many, many animals as well. It's an older building and it's really more of a glamorized shed. There is nothing fancy about the office and I need to walk through a yard where the animals visit and I may end up with dirty shoes. But I don't give a hoot about any of this. The volunteers and staff are wonderful. It's a comfortable place for animals as they are the primary focus. The exam table is always clean. Get there early on a Saturday morning and you will see the chores being done and the cleaning taking place. I've seen it on many occasions. The couch is for the animals. I'm okay with that. If Katie isn't feeling great when we go to visit, I'm glad she had a comfortable spot to wait her turn. And if I choose to sit down then I take home a little extra fur on my coat. Works for me. Fur Keeps is a little off the beaten path and Dr. Rycoff is full of heart. She tells it like it is and truly cares about what's best for your fur family. I have no intention of going anywhere else and I am so glad that she's here to keep my kids on the right track from here on out!

i had the pleasure of volunteering at the country animal haven for a few weeks while being bored…read moreand unemployed in madison this winter. this place is an amazing no-kill, non-profit animal shelter. they provide a safe place for cats that are still waiting to find the perfect home. run completely by volunteers, this place is very well-kept, clean and organized. the cats have pretty much free run of the house and barn -- and only a few are kept in cages (the young kittens and the sick/ill-tempered). it is nice to see so many cats in one place with the freedom to roam as they please. also, i was amazed to see cats that got along so well with each other. the location is a bit off the beaten path, but it's well worth the visit. there are plenty of cats waiting to be adopted. also, i believe some of them are brought to petsmart and mounds to be showcased for adoption. in addition, if you have free time, lend a hand. volunteers are always appreciated! :)

They responded to all my emails immediately, answered all my questions thoroughly, checked out all my references, and were just excited to meet me as I was to meet my new cat when it was finally time to adopt! All the cats are spayed/neutered, up to date on shots/ heartworm prevention, and tested for FeLV. Plus, you get all of your new cat's paperwork, and if you adopt the cat during one of the days when PetsMart is hosting them, you also end up getting a $25 credit that you can put towards anything in the store. Such a good deal! An added bonus was that 2 months ago I emailled Petropolis to find out if any of Mugi's old foster parents had any baby pictures of him, and I was sent about 25 pictures of him as a teensy little kitten within hours!
