Poor customer service…read more I had a disappointing experience here due to how a simple issue was handled. I ordered a fish dish without realising it wasn't a fillet (I don't usually eat fish). After trying to eat it, I found it very difficult to avoid the small bones. As I am nine months pregnant, this was uncomfortable and tiring. I politely asked whether the fish could be taken off the bone. The man who appeared to be in charge refused outright and lectured me in front of other customers. No alternative or solution was offered--just a dismissive "that's what you ordered" attitude. I accept that I may have ordered the wrong dish by mistake, but basic customer service (and just human-to-human kindness) involves empathy and an attempt to help resolve the problem. Unfortunately, the response I received was unsympathetic and unprofessional, and it left me feeling embarrassed.

This place calls itself a "pizza pub" so I had to order one. ordered the Quackery which had shredded duck with crispy skin and streaks of hoisin sauce. This is Peking duck pizza! The crust was thin with a slight chew to it, and globs of gooey mozzarella... it was so good I didn't want to share! washed it all down with a tall glass of Bitburger. Worth a visit if you are ever in Brighton!

Food wise, I can't recommend the steaks enough here. They source the meat locally and you can tell the difference in the flavour. The Sirloins are fantastic and the chef really knows how to cook it to order (you'd be surprised how many don't. Perfect place to head to on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Located on the fringes of Hassocks and overlooking a beautiful stretch of Sussex countryside (great for a post Sunday roast walk to preserve the waistline!), the pub has the advantage of space that Brighton establishments sometimes lack. You would be hard pressed not to find a parking space and the same applies to seating within. The pub provides a cozy bar including a pool table if you fancy stopping by for a swift pint, the 'Keymer' bar for a more relaxed beverage and a large, yet homely dining area if you have come to eat. I will come back to the food in a minute. In the summer, the expansive secluded garden is perfect for children to bomb about, or for those summer nights when the weather is pleasant (of course, a bit hit and miss in this country!). The menu is wide ranging (check the website for a current list of dishes) and offers traditional, quality pub food. A lot of the produce is locally sourced and cooked to order. Sometimes this does mean that you wait a little longer for your meal, but the wait is worth it in such a nice environment. This is a great pub to consider for a Sunday roast, especially if you live in Brighton and have access to a car. They will happily take bookings and also cater for private parties in the dining area. I would have liked to see a wider range of ales on tap, but they do try and keep a local brew or two in rotation. Aside from that, expect your regular range of alcoholic tipples on offer. Many moons ago, in my youth we used to walk to the Thatched from Burgess Hill for our Friday drinking sessions and I would still make that walk! I guess the one negative is the location if you are without transport, but if you do make the pilgrimage from the station, I believe you will be glad that you did.

This time I decided to give The White Horse a try. When you first walk in, it comes across as a typical country pub. There was an open fire roaring away, a nice treat during the recent cold spell. Locals were lined up at the bar and numerous dogs were curled up around feet. The section at the back, however, is more modern and open, and obviously attracts a fair few diners. The menu is quite extensive offering sharing platters, ciabatta sarnies, ploughmans and main meals. Many of the dishes are homemade and lots of products are sourced from within the village. I plonked for a sausage ciabatta with red onion jam. This was beautifully presented on a wooden serving board with a bowl of chips and a nicely dressed side salad. It was a huge portion considering we only wanted a snack, but very tasty and good value at £7. I will be dividing my time between here and The Bull for my lunch time visits from now on.

The beef Stroganoff was fantastic and really tender. The staff are pretty welcoming and set a nice relaxed atmosphere so its a nice place to just pop in and chill out over a few beers.

The main bar follows the pub tradition of hanging random items from the ceiling and here you will find an eclectic range of toby jugs and tankards. There is parking out front and a large garden to enjoy a summertime beer, but the real reason for coming to the greyhound is the food. They serve gastro pub cuisine and I have eaten a number of very tasty meals here. You will get full waitress service and i would describe the menu as upper market classic English cuisine. The Sunday roasts are also good, especially the nut roast and they are accompanied by all the trimmings. You will pay between £8 - £15 for a main course, but seeing as the y source local, quality produce, this is about fair. There are also a good range of locally baked desserts to satisfy those with a sweet tooth, although I tend to go for the cheeseboard myself. Expect a good range of lagers and ales on tap and a respectable wine list. There are also quiz nights held on Monday's. All in all, a great pub bursting with character, which is run by friendly staff. It's nicely placed to have a little stroll around the churchyard opposite to work off the meal also.

Food is OK but expensive compared to other similar venues locally - the food is the same as the other pubs in this small, local chain. Not sure this is a good thing as, surely, most people choose a venue on it's food and this takes away that choice... They do offer a Dining Club discount on food (must include a main course) of 10% - this is Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and 'a steak for a tenner' deal on Thursdays. The whole pub is undergoing refurbishment in early 2024 inside and out which is great news as it was looking a bit tired when we last visited. Better weather sees the use of the large field for parking and al-fresco dining which proves very popular, especially at weekends as the pub is located in the South Downs National Park and is just a (steep) walk from the South Downs Way.

The staff fit the pub like a glove; really down to earth and friendly. I popped in last week on my own purely as I was freezing (and thirsty) and the barmaid was quite happy to chat away without being intrusive. Food wise, the Pork and Aspall Cider stew looked and smelled fantastic when I saw it go out and there's plenty of other home cooked, locally sourced choices on the menu. Few friends ordered the pies and I had the burger. None of us had any complaints about the food at all. The puddings were also delicious! We chose the ultimate tower brownie which considered of a cookie base under a warm brownie with vanilla ice cram. Very tasty. Would stop in again when in the area!

However I think a great location has made them a bit complacent - the roast we had would have to have been something special to justify the £15 price tag (not including pudding extra at £5!). However, it wasn't. I went for the (well-cooked, though waver thin) beef, which came with a tiny amount of each of 7 different vegetables (why so many?), all boiled and a bit bland. From someone who works in the catering industry I suspect the roast potatoes were the frozen roast potatoes you can microwave. Another party had fish and chips which actually looked a lot better, but I'm just going on what I saw. Its hard to have roasts ready for customers at a moments notice (ahem . . . a week), but cmon, give it a decent try, or halve the price. Bit of a rip.
