Sunday: a reduced menu is offered, mainly consisting of various roast meats. Great! I love a roast dinner! Having pre-booked a table for Sunday evening, and being advised that they had run out of Beef Rib Platter (not an issue as nobody was going to order it), we ordered.
Five of the nine in my party ordered a roast dinner. It came as rather a disappointment then for us to be told five minutes later that there was no roast chicken, no roast turkey and no pork! But wait, there is good news! They had ONE portion of roast beef left!
Wow! Impressed or what?
Anyway, we ordered from the other (presumably frozen ready-meal) options. And waited. It was now an hour since we arrived, but not too long after that the plates were brought out. Well, I should say that all but one (mine of course!) appeared.
The food (when it did eventually get there) wasn't too bad, though if I am honest it wasn't up to the standard I would have expected for the price. And that's allowing for the fact that they were kind enough to not charge for the late main course and even threw in a free dessert.
It would not have been quite such a disappointment perhaps had it been a simple family evening out, but it was my son's 18th birthday celebration.
I would say that I will know better next time, but of course there will be no next time! By which I mean that there will not be another 18th birthday to celebrate, and also there certainly will not be another meal taken at The Friars Oak, Hassocks! read more
