Typically July is not a month where we willingly sit outdoors for a midday meal, but we'd had a little cool front blow through and the weather was unusually mild. We chose outdoor seating under the covered patio of what had several decades ago been exactly what the name exactly declares ... a filling station of petrol and general automobile servies. This fillin' station has a corner location which also makes is ultra suitable for people and traffic watching. Ordered lunch and drinks, watched the late morning traffic and visisted. A good meal was consumed - hamburgers, onions rings and sweet potato fries along with soda and unsweet tea (this is Texas, no sweetener needed). Clean functional restrooms, pleasant service, settled the bill table side. Parking can be trickey as we were in the old downtown area, but was reasonable.

It was settled in 1854, and today is home to around 3,100 San Sabans. Pecans became a big part of their economy in the 1870"s and today San Saba is simply known as the "Pecan Capital of the World". If you visit the Great San Saba River Pecan Company you can enjoy a complimentary cup of Pecan Coffee and sample their preserves. If you're lucky enough to visit between November and January, you can even pick your own pecans. We didn't travel to San Saba, but we did visit downtown Grapevine and saw their products in one of the many downtown stores. We came across a jar of their Peach Pecan and Amaretto Jam. Well, how can anyone in their right mind resist that? We had it with breakfast today and it was fantastic. Tons of peaches and pecans everywhere, swimming in an amaretto jelly.
