I booked the Polaris guided tour. Ashley was my guide and she is very knowledgeable and familiar with the Tonopah lore. Do yourself a huge favor and book the Polaris tour on cold days you will not be disappointed. The tour lasted 2 hours and went by really fast. My children really enjoyed hearing about the miners, the town, and life in the camps when silver was found. Bring the kids and anyone who loves history, geology, mineralogy, and Tonopah Lore. read more

I didn't even get to go in unfortunately! There hours state on google, ChatGPT, and yelp that it's open till 5:00pm. We got up there at 4:00 and the lady told us to leave that she was closed and to come back tomorrow at 8am. (Gate is still open so we assumed it was as well). This city doesn't run on tourism at all and is mainly for people stopping by for work. The other museum was better which was disappointing as we came for tourism on minerals. It looks like a pretty place with history however wasn't able to check it out for a quick glance. read more

Authentic atmosphere giving a nice setting on how mining started with pick and shovel ending with big machinery and big holes in the ground. We visited Tonopah at the beginning of last week for a few days. We love exploring Nevada's ghost towns. There is so many around the Tonopah area, along with a lot of history. One of the places on the list to visit was the Tonopah Historic Mining Park. The signed up for a guided tour, because we were pressed for time and the price was very reasonable, but afterwards we were glad we did for lots of other reasons. We started out at the visited center and watched a movie about how the area's history. It was pretty good. Then it was time for the tour. Our guide, Grace, was awesome. It was windy so she took us around in the closed sided Polaris. She was extremely knowledgeable and was enthusiastic about it which makes for a much more enjoyable experience. We drove around to the various spots and she would stop between them if we wanted to take a picture. We were able to see the head frames and see straight down the shafts below them. If you have a fear of heights, don't look down. We saw the vault where the gold and silver was stored; the reason everything surrounding it, exists. We recommend the park to anyone interested in history, mining, machinery. It's great for kids and adults. If you're in the area, visit the park. read more

Fascinating place. We've been here twice, and Jeff, the guy we met both times, was super friendly and told fascinating stories about the place. I would strongly recommend taking the tour here. The mining park is deceptively large, so you can spend a fair amount of time wandering around here or taking the tour if you wish. read more

This was a perfect stop to get out and stretch our legs while on our way to Las Vegas! The visitors center and 20 minute movie is free. To take the tour of the grounds, it costs $5 per person. Very cheap for all the great history and artifacts you're able to get up close and personal with. They also offer guided Polaris tours for a fee, if you don't feel like walking the grounds. I'd recommend walking around the visitors center exhibits, and watching the movie before walking the grounds. The movie provides a lot of great background history on the area and the Butler's, who first found the silver here in 1900. Toponah's moniker is "Queen of the Silver Camps". They're open 7 days a week, from 8-4. They offer exhibits and a gift shop in the visitors center. They have a gravel parking lot for visitors, and it can get muddy. Highly recommend if in the area! read more

One of the best mining museums out there. It's a perfect place to stretch your legs on a roadtrip, and you can spend several quality hours walking around if you are fascinated by this history. This place is so neat. Stayed at the adjacent hotel and went for a stroll here. Staff is super nice and place isn't packed busy. It was cool to be able to wonder around ourselves. It started to storm 10 min after we started walking (set aside an hour or two to take it all in) and staff said we can visit the next day since we got rained out. Lots of really pretty stones you can buy, lots of cool historical buildings, and objects too. Only reason we cut our tour short was because I have a grasshopper phobia and they were out and about :( this place is so cool though, I'd visit again! read more

What a cool place. We've stayed at the Mizpah years ago and it was never open. It's a welcome sight to see those front gates open on this mining park. From the employee at the gift shop to all there is to see...5 stars. My 3yo loved it, especially the neat rocks they sell in the gift shop you can toss into a cloth bag. The woman at the gift shop suggested I take him on the path to the "tunnel"....he had a blast pretending it was collapsing and running the length of it with my flashlight. Great place to spend a few hours and it is cheap to do. read more

Just so much history, love Tonopah, our guide Brittani was terrific. Very friendly. My second time in a month as wanted to bring my daughter and my mom. They both enjoyed immensely. A lot of walking here! You'll see "Tonopah Mining Park" etched into the rock hill. The main building hosts a museum (pictures, signs, tools, glass bottle collection) and gift shop (books, maps, mugs, pens, bumper stickers, postcards, and other souvenirs). You pay for admission at the front desk (Adults $5, Kids $3, Kids 6 & Under and Veterans Free) and given a guide map and watch a short video. After the watching the video, take a walk outside to various mining exhibits, buildings, and displays overlooking Tonopah. Because of the high elevation (over 6,000 feet), it can be easy to get tired from walking around the rolling terrain. I took a needed lunch break at the nearby McDonald's and resumed my walking tour later. Overall, my visit here was very interesting. read more

We went to the Tonopah H. Mining Park specifically to see a collection of mining artifacts and tools donated by my late Grandfather. As it turns out his collection was at the Central NV museum right down the street! Mr Jeff Martin who was a docent at the mining Park was able to guide us to the correct museum after we showed him pictures of the exhibit! Because him we were able to see My Grandfather's collection before the museum closed Sat night! We came back and toured the Mining Park the next day! We look forward to returning there with my Mom in the near future!Thank you Jeff Martin! Definitely worth visiting in Tonopah! Do bring good walking shoes! No gym visit before needed! read more

I didn't actually get to go in here but drove all around it. They do have active mines , so you can't go in those but it looks like you have to hike around and check out the area. I'm a massive geek about historical stuff. Next time I'm in tonopah this is on my to do list. read more

This enhanced Mining Property is a great place to learn how the miners extracted the ore from the Mine and refined the ore into bars. The park has displays that show the tools and mineral specimens that are well lit. The Mining district of Goldfield is another great place of Nevada Mining history, the Florence is regarded as one of the best preserved mines in the State of Nevada. read more

Here is a place where I didn't have to trespass in order to get a look at the remaining mining structures. The museum has quite a large mineral display. I was very happy to see the headframes, hoist shelters and ore sorting bins in such good condition. Unfortunately, there are no mill remains here, only the foundation of the Montana Tonopah Mill. read more

We were in Tonopah over night and had a few hours to kill. We decided to go to this mining museum. My 10yr old son is into mining. This your was very informative, interactive and Jeff our guide was awesome. He knew his stuff and really gave us a good tour of the mines, had good stories about the mines and the way that the restoration was done there was a ton to see. My 7 and 10 didn't stop taking about this for at least an hour afterwards. read more

So in this little Central Nevada town there is a great not so little mining museum which is a lot of fun, and is dog-friendly. If you are driving Yosemite to Las Vegas this is an interesting stop along the way which can be paired with getting more gas at the Shell, and a cool small museum for this part of the state called the "Central Nevada Museum". It's not the Exploratorium by any stretch of the imagination but it is very hands on, and you can see the items without plexglass between you and the materials. One thing I do ask as a budding anthropologist is that you DON'T rip, tear, shread, or tag any items so that it can be kept this way as a real nostalgic representation of old west mining history. read more

This was one of the best tours I have ever been on. It is very inexpensive to take their walking tour but I would suggest their guided Polaris tour. Our tour guide was so educated about the history of Tonopah and the mines, and it was so interesting! I suggest this tour to anyone interested in mining history or Nevada history, great for adults and children! read more

Went on a guided tour the other day and was so pleased! The employee had great knowledge on the history of the old mines and even the equiptment the miners used! Super friendly and very fair prices. Fascinating place, with some historic mine rigs, stone samples, nice gift shop (kids will love it). Make sure to watch the movie about mining in Mizpah, very interesting. Take your kids out, or make sure you go out to visit different things on the property outside the museum. There's all sorts of stuff to see. This place is a blast! We almost didn't go because of time constraints. I did what I always do and packed too much into too short of a time. We drove by the previous night while touring Tonopah and got to see it from the outside. We had no idea how big this place was until we went there the next morning. It was really cold out and snow was covering the ground. We had our 6 year old and were not properly dressed for the weather. By all rights we should've left, but something kind of pulled us in. We were the first visitor of the day and signed in on the log book. I was pleased to see a Geocaching log book there because I'm a geocacher as well. The gentleman that came out to greet us was very helpful, clear and concise and once he gave us a map, we were on our way on a self guided tour. You could do a quick self guided tour in an hour but you really need a couple of hours to spend and enjoy the place. Ever since I moved to Reno Nevada I've been curious about mines and as a geocacher I've run into a couple, but I know better than to mess with them. That's why this place is so much fun, as you can go through a mine and onto a walkway that you can look down a shaft a couple hundred feet. It's not as dangerous as it seems though with signs and fences posted in lots of places, though if you're afraid of heights there are a couple places you might want to avoid. Another cool thing is being able to walk into the buildings which is something you cannot do at most ghost town type places. There's lots of cool history here as well as a great place to take pictures and a stunning view of the area from above. read more

Who would want to go to Tonopah Nevada for a vacation? Well I would actually. The Mining Park was well worth the visit, we spent some time chatting with the gentleman working there who was from San Francisco of all places. There is another museum in Tonopah that is mostly about the Army Air Corps training base there during WWII. You can drive out to the airport and see several of the huge wooden hangars left over from the war that are still standing, and spend some time wandering through them. North of Tonopah are the semi-ghost towns of Manhattan and Belmont, which were interesting. The grand old Mizpah hotel still stands empty downtown, once the finest hotel between Denver and San Francisco. read more

It will give you a better appreciation and understanding of the mining history of this area and the relics you are seeing in the park. If you are interested in mining and western history, you won't be disappointed by spending half of a day here. This place is on the grounds of a number of large abandoned mines, but you don't have to worry about falling down an old shaft if you put a foot wrong. There are fences and walkways set up so that you can see everything without the risk of death. Walk down a tunnel to a cage over a 500' foot deep stope. You can look through the grate down into the darkness and not see the bottom! Walk through the building housing the huge hoist for the 1400 foot deep Mizpah Mine. Walk inside the immense grizzly where cartloads of ore were sorted and dumped into traincars by the Silvertop Mine. The display of minerals (especially the fluorescent ones) is worth a stop in the visitor's center. Jeff at the visitor's center was very friendly and welcoming. My only regret -- I didn't have more time to spend here. My kids loved it, too. read more
