In this case, the Power Station at the Rockwell Powerplant (that's a lot of power right there!) holds a special place in my heart. Powerplant Mall, being located in a business area like Rockwell is a strategic place for meetings and gatherings. This is where Powerstation personally comes into play. Whether I'm early or someone is running late for a meeting, or I'm simply waiting for my significant other to have her class conclude at the next door law school, I can always head to the arcade to kill some time. I actually also treat these instances as an opportunity for stress relief. I highly suggest my favorite first-person shooter, Razing Storm: the Complete Destruction Machine Gun Game. As the name suggests, there's nothing sophisticated, just all-out mayhem! I like how the gun gives you the sensation that you're actually shooting a real gun (sort of). After an hour or so of continuous play, your dominant hand may feel numb. It's even more fun if you tag a friend along, or the person you'll be having a business meeting with. Talk about establishing rapport!

I think the worst is store associates making a customer wait for no good reason. Waste of time. Timezone sells fun but at the end it's a scam with scammy machines that are rigged with no payout. Perhaps even if the machine was due to pay out and seems like it would structures are in place inside the display of the machine to make sure it does not. Timezone arcade sells a scam. Period.

But the arcade, especially Timezone, looked so fun. The first time I went to Timezone, I was babysitting my two nieces and one nephew. I was just with their nanny and I didn't know how to get them to calm down. They spotted Timezone, checked their bag and found their Timezone card and ran to the arcade. For a few hours, we just the random games that they had and tried to get a lot of tokens. They really enjoyed controlling the machine and trying to get a stuffed toy. Another game they liked was basketball. It was pretty easy to earn points in that one.

Most videoke places are built for groups, and are priced accordingly. We need someplace cheap, where we could sing our hearts out without anyone giving a damn. We found the perfect place, suprisingly, in Starmall's Quantum. Yes, the arcade. They have small videoke booths, priced at around five pesos a song (five pesos = 1 token = 1 song), which is a far cry from the PHP5,000 flat rate of Red Box. It's best to come here on a weekday, when people are normally at work, since the place is deserted. If you've got leftover tokens, you can even have a "friendly" game of hoops (or slots or whatever, if that's more your thing). It's an arcade, go crazy.

I didn't want to go for the big places like Red Box, because they're built for groups and are therefore very expensive if it's just going to be the two of us. I was starting to worry that the only way I could have my videoke fix was to go to a bar on open mic night. Fortunately, I found this place. It's quiet, it's clean, there are multiple PRIVATE booths, and it is only five pesos per song. The scoring system seems to be broken though, as it kept giving me zero (with the annoying "Don't worry! Practice makes perfect" - ugh!), but aside from that obvious mistake, the place is perfect.

While waiting in line, staff had us look through the menu so we could decide which bottles to order. However once inside, we were suddenly told that the only bottles available were priced at 4,700 and above, and that everything cheaper was "sold out." This seemed impossible, as the menu had around 20 options for cheaper bottles, and we arrived at 11:30 p.m. on a Monday when the place was practically empty. We debated with the waiter for about half an hour, but he kept insisting there was nothing else available, leaving us with no real choice. Eventually, we were forced to order two bottles at 4,700 each. A few moments later, another group walked in and suddenly, everything was magically back in stock. They were able to order whatever they wanted and when we asked why, they said it was because they were regulars. So turned out there were cheaper options physically in stock - just not for us. We were deliberately lied to in order to push us into buying more expensive bottles. Our total came to around 10,000 - double the minimum price. The cherry on top? After I paid, it took them 30 minutes to return our change (400), and it genuinely felt like they had no intention of giving it back until we reminded them.

Situated on the fifth floor of Fisher Mall, parking isn't a problem, and restaurants are an escalator and a few steps away. We visited Playland for a three-year-old's birthday party, and we brought a three-year-old with us. There's a spacious function room for these exact purposes, and it can fit around fifty people comfortably. As party favors, the kids were given Ride-All-You-Can stamps, so I guess they have some sort of kiddie party package that's inclusive of the function room and the entertainment area itself. We were also given cards to use for the arcade games--standard ones like the claw machine things and shooting stalls. Kids that are 4 feet and above can ride by themselves. Any shorter than that, and they require an adult companion. My three-year-old nephew had a blast in the brightly lit mini-ferris wheel. The helicopter ride was spinning, but its arms didn't go up and down at the time, and that really took away from its appeal. I do hope they fix it soon. It's a great ride to stir a child's imagination as the front seat has a steering wheel, and they can pretend to be pilots. Overall, we had a great time, and it was a great venue, but the arcade could use some work.

Kidding aside, the fact that every mall has one makes them ordinary and not at all special. The reason we're talking about Fisher Mall's arcade aptly named Playland is because they have something else going for them aside from your run off the mill video games (which they have plenty of). What makes them different is that after going up a flight of stairs, you'll be greeted with a full sized basketball court. I was actually surprised when I learned of this because it is such a strange place to put a court in. What's more is that beside the court, there are a couple of billiard tables and dart boards you can rent out too. A slight problem with the court is that a concrete pillar gets in the way. Whenever I tell people this they get turned off so I attached a photo with a slipper and a pen for scale. I'm high-tech like that.
