However, on this particular check in, I was attending an event on a Saturday to watch my niece sing. It was a community event called a Fall Festival where different groups were performing from neighboring schools. That's all well and good, but there was no signage outside telling people the exact location to come in and buy tickets. From observation (and a text from a family member) assisted me in finding the right entry to the event. Inside, there isn't much signage to direct one to different parts of the school. You know how in stores they have arrows pointing you in the direction of a location (i.e. restroom, gym, cafeteria)? Not here. Would have been helpful. Once again, observation led me to the direction of the outdoor event, which I missed by a longshot because I was told my niece's performance would last from 11:30-12 and I still missed it even though I arrived by 11:45 :/ In all honesty, that comment was directed towards the organizers of the event who charged $2 for entry, but to host the festival at a place that lacks signage is not good. I can imagine some new kid trying to find classes on the first day becoming extremely overwhelmed by a place like this. I'm sure it's a great school, just had a doughy brained designer!

First opening its doors in 1974, Stratford is now serving its second generation of students in the…read moreSpring Branch School District. This is most evident on chilly winter nights when Stratford plays a home football game at the adjacent Tully Stadium. I know it's time to pack up and head over to watch the game when I start hearing the Stratford band's drum section and the sound of the announcer's voice reverberate throughout the neighborhood. It is the single most important cohesive force in the area. Everyone goes to the game. It's three generations now: grandparents, parents (many who attended Stratford themselves) and the kids. Other neighbors who have no affiliation with Stratford at all go because it's where everyone else is on a Friday night. For hardcore Stratford fans, Stratford's 1978 Division 5A State Championship team will always loom large. Visions of more football glory of this sort cropped up again during the 2007 fall season because a phenomenal athlete, Andrew Luck (son of Oliver Luck who was a quarterback for the Oilers and is currently the President of the Houston Dynamo), was able to hoist the whole football program on his shoulders, quarterback them to the district title and then power the team through several early rounds of the state championship tournament. Now that Stratford's football program is back to its normal mediocrity in the post-Luck era, Stratford fans are content when the team beats its arch-rival, Memorial High School. In many ways, it's a pity that, here in Texas, the football program defines a school's identity. At Stratford for instance, the girl's volleyball team is much more of a perennial contender in the city and state than the football program ever has been. I've had one daughter graduate from Stratford, another currently is a student there and I have son who's in the queue to attend Stratford when he gets out of Middle School. I believe my kids are lucky. Stratford is consistently one of the highest-ranked schools in the United States per Newsweek magazine. It has an outstanding orchestra program. The Stratford Playhouse puts on productions of which many college programs would be very envious. Its Academy of Science and Engineering provides a unique opportunity for America's future technology leaders to flex their mental muscles. The best endorsement I can give the school, however, is to repeat what my daughter (who just completed her first semester at UT Austin) told me after making UT's honor role: "Dad, Stratford actually prepared me very well for college." Good job, Stratford. Go Spartans!

When I first started, I was a little hesitant being this was my child's first childcare but I was greeted by the amazing management team Claudia, Tina, and Linda. I would come in, and Linda would always assure me that it might start off rough but it would get better. Her constant checks on my daughter eased my worries. Unfortunately, today I have been informed that she is no longer apart of the building, which is so sad to hear. Certainly she was not fired for anything if she was allowed to continue the full work day, which I feel is very unprofessional and even the hardest thing ever for her. This quickly changed my view on this Lighthouse. They have no care on how things affect people, parents, or children. They also do not even care how we the parents feel when making drastic decisions to our children's lives, when we are the ones keeping the business afloat.
