Which it is great... even my elderly father, a Mexican-food die-hard person that reluctantly to try new food liked this place the first time he "had" to come because it was a family birthday dinner. Now... he is the one suggesting we should come here. Believe me, that says a lot. They have tables that are often put together to accomodate large families. It is a family place. They have a down-stairs and an upstairs. We asked to be sitted downstairs because my father can't go up steep stairs, and they were eager to accomodate. The service is super friendly and although they are not super quick, they aren't super slow either. It is just right. They are located in a busy street, however parking is convenient in their small private parking area right in-front of the restaurant. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are good. We tried it all. It is a good Japanese-Mexican Fusion place. Come with an open mind and I trust you will enjoy.

This place didn't disappoint even for someone who normally doesn't eat sushi all the time. The waiter was very helpful in ordering. The ambiance was small place with music playing in background. The most comfortable chairs at the table, especially for a large person. We tried the rice dish with beef, chicken and shrimp, fantastic! We tried the spicy noodle dish and that had a different flavor, which was great! We also tried two different rolls and that too was good. Then we finished off with a brownie platter dessert that our granddaughter destroyed because it was so good. We will definitely come back.

We started with the gyozas, which were really good. He got the dragon roll and I ordered the sexy roll. Both were tasty, but I especially loved the tempura crumbs on top of mine they added the perfect crunch and flavor. A few weeks later, I went back with my mom. We ordered the gyozas again, plus spicy edamame, fried rice, and of course, I had to get the sexy roll again. Most of the food was great, but unfortunately, the roll didn't live up to the first visit. It didn't seem as fresh, and the tempura crumbs were a bit stale this time. Overall, still a nice spot, but hoping for more consistency next time!

The service was great and the food was delicious! We didn't get our waiter's name, but he was a nice young man waiting tables on 8/1 at 3:00 pm. He did a great job! He answered all our questions since it was our first time there and made it easy to make our selections. I ordered the spicy seafood noodle soup and my husband had the sweet and sour pork. We also ordered the Harlingen roll to share between us since that is our home town. The soup was wonderfully spicy and the noodles were yummy! The pork was very tender and the sauce light and obviously made in house. The Harlingen roll was very nice. What surprised us was that it was deep fried. Everything was so delicious! The restaurant is beautifully decorated, clean, and comfortable. We went for lunch, but I suspect it would be a wonderful place for a romantic dinner for two. We will definitely be back. Thank you so much for making our anniversary a special one!

Just be aware that the lunch special does not include the sashimi/nigiri options. The interior has great lighting and it is very lively. It's not too noisy and there's plenty of parking around the corner as well. My main complaint about Umiya is that the service here is hit or miss. Sometimes I would get a waiter/waitress who would constantly check-up on me and ask about what I wanted to order. Other times, the waiter/waitress would rarely come by my table to take my order. If there could be some more consistency in the service, then that would greatly enhance the customer all-you-can-eat experience. In regards to the food, I highly recommend getting a cup of their miso soup since it's not too salty and has a good amount of tofu and seaweed. It has a good balance of savoriness. I highly recommend trying their rainbow roll, yummy roll, and shaggy dog roll too. The rolls are made to order and they have always come out fresh during my visits. I haven't had a bad tasting roll Don't forget to get some ice cream too for dessert because their green tea ice cream has a nice natural earthy tone to its flavor profile.
