Let me start by saying this is my 3rd go around at finishing my degree. May the 3rd tie be the…read morecharm. Second. this is my 3rd semester at CMC. My starting experience was mixed. I honestly felt like the counseling staff were not attentive to new students. They have a higher than most colleges turn over. Some would say that is expected in a tourist place, but at a college? Nope, not good. So let's dissect this part by part. #1 Price. affordable, best price for a community college I have ever seen. They get an A for that. #2 Reaching staff. B- Some of the staff are GREAT at returning calls, so are some of the teachers. A big thank you to Anna and Jennifer in financial aid and the book ordering department. #3 Their 'efollets' online book store. F. I'd give a Z if that was a letter grade! This online book place is extortion. The cost of books is ridiculous and after many discussions with fellow students, rarely gets used. Their bu back program is a slap in the face for what they give back for the books you bought/rented. Most students order from Amazon or other book places online or just do the online rental version. CMC needs to just get rid of Efollet. #4 Technology and communication with fellow students/staff. B- I think they have a great technology platform. I like Canvas but think the school should make a policy of everyone (teacher and student) using it. I have a class this semester where 1 professor doesn't use Canvas at all, no CMC email either. It was hard to reach her and that made things very stressful for me. I get that at the college level your suppose to make effort but I'm not a stalker and that was crazy trying to reach her when even the staff wasn't sure how. #5 Communication from CMC staff/admin/main branch. C+ While many I think do a good job, leaving a cryptic message about a class that was dropped due to not enough people registered for it, without giving your name and what the class is and a number where to all you back at is bad phone etiquette and just rude. Also, again communication. I left a message for one of the new counselor's only to hear that he just went on vacation (really? because most people that start a job CANNOT go on vacation for a bit until they earn that time!) and he STILL hasn't called me back. Another counselor forgot to do my paperwork I submitted to her for early registration (and once you pass that time, you can't fix it until regular registration opens), then she still messes up by registering me for classes I couldn't take due to conflict time with my work schedule. I took it up with the Dean and got it fixed. I also had issue with SOME people at the front desk in Dillon (Breck you ladies get a A-!). I got a call from someone specific (its a small community so I'll leave her name off here) who wanted my high school info but in her message said not important and yet said call her back by 3pm. First, transcripts give that info, 2nd I was half way through my 2nd semester. Why need it now? Oh, cause they are too lazy to look it up. It's easier to pick up a phone and ask the student. I'm not a fan of this person for other personal reasons. People in small towns talk and my boys have told me things that make me not so happy with this person. Point being, I hope to not deal with her anymore. I'll call Breck campus. #6 Lack of classes offered at night. C- Business, language, etc... We are a resort community, yet the only language offered is Spanish and English as a 2nd language. I would think that Russian, German, Italian, French or other languages would be possible to be offered. There aren't enough business classes offered though they offer a bachelors in business now. Disappointing. #7 They have a great technology online tool B- I love that there is web help through the virtual library. I also love the help desk, Yuliya is wonderful and helpful! However, their lack of tutoring in subjects they offer (accounting for one!) is disturbing. It isn't the math, it's the principles of accounting i don't get! Hence taking Principles of Accounting. The teacher was nice and pleasant but he works as an accountant. What is that saying, you can't see the forest through the trees? Sometimes when you work in a field so much explaining things in layman's terms is difficult to someone new? CMC totes their sustainable programs. They have recycle bins everywhere, w/ ways to fill up reusable water bottles instead of using a new water bottle every time (ironic because the vending machines are a bit of a contradiction right by the water fountains). They even has signs in the bathroom about half flushes vs full flushes. I have heard their culinary program is amazing and hope to take some cooking classes (yes, I need lessons in cooking I don't enjoy it and I'm horrible at it). Communication is key in any business, college, non-profit, any place period. Some people have been great to work with there, some have made me wonder about their position at the college. Overall C+ stay tuned...

The library was so inviting and I could hear the sound of happy children on a Tuesday morning event while browsing the books on sale. I did not have cash or credit card so did not leave with any books, but know I can come back before 7 pm on a weekday! The bathrooms were super clean and the whole place looked modern. It was built in 2008 but looks much newer and well-kept. The librarian suggested I go upstairs and this was the real treat. I must have looked like I wanted something, so the upstairs librarian helped me find a biography on Oppenheimer as their book of Prometheus Unbound was checked out, which was the book the recent movie was based which I watched on my plane ride yesterday. I saw some comfy seats by the window with amazing views of the river, so I read in peace and quiet. I plan to come back each day to read another chapter! It was such an inviting space and a hub of community activities. If I lived here, I would come daily. Amazing hours-they open at 8 am on weekdays! Don't miss the second floor if you like beautiful views and peaceful, relaxing places to read. Shout out to the friendly librarians here!
