Chip is a consummate professional, a piano technician and tuner for the kind of person who wants…read morethe best results possible from their instrument. I especially like that he's down to earth about the costs and benefits of the work he does: not everything you choose to do will make a big difference, but that depends on you, the customer, and determining with chip if it's important to you and if it's worth the cost. Do you want a piano tuned to 430 to match Schumann frequencies so it sounds more mellow, like the most beautiful of baroque instruments? Or maybe at 442 to push the sound a bit, make it more aggressive? We talked quite a bit about what I wanted from the instrument before he started. Then, and only then, did he start working. He's a listener first, the kind of customer service person you hope to meet and rarely do today: he wants to help you get what you want from your instrument, not what he thinks it should be. A piano is a part of the family, and it has it's own unique relationship with you, the owner. Race cars are tuned to match the racer, violins to match the player, guitars custom made to match the guitarist. Call chip if you want the best. Or if you just want whatever it takes to keep the thing upright for another year. He'll deliver the results you want at an affordable price.

After studying for six summers at the Interlochen Music Festival, he obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and Orchestral Conducting from Virginia Commonwealth University (1992-1996); his Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Choral Conducting from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (1996-1997); and his DMA degree in Piano Performance and Orchestral Conducting from the University of Houston Moores School of Music (1997-2001). His teachers have included Nelita True, Horacio Gutiérrez, Ruth Tomfohrde, Wesley Ball, Tayloe Harding, and Landon Bilyeu. Chip has been tuning since 1992. Before moving to Albuquerque, he was the Resident Piano Technician and Faculty at Interlochen Arts Academy and Interlochen Arts Camp, coordinating the care of 340 pianos, harpsichords, digital keyboards, and historical keyboard instruments. He tunes now for the New Mexico School of Music, the Albuquerque Institute of Music, and hundreds of families in Albuquerque.

The team of Anthony and Neal over at Pianowerkes in Albuquerque were nothing less than amazing,…read morecompassionate, supportive; and we felt no pressure whatsoever in purchasing a once in a lifetime NEW PIANO. I called in, spoke to them twice, then made an appointment to go up from Santa Fe to see some pianos. It was not only exciting, but quite lovely having the entire store to myself to explore what piano would work for me; especially since I was a tad nervous since I had not played in quite sometime. Neal could not have been more sensitive to my needs and vulnerability. He played like a virtuoso so I could get the full range of the sound; I played to feel the sound and the piano itself. I had the best of both worlds. Going in I wanted a used piano; but after playing a new Yamaha all bets were off. I have played used all my life, so having a new piano all of my own really was not only heartfelt, but personally intimate. The new one I played on the floor was butter; brand new, on the floor only a few weeks; but what 'made the butter melt' was when I asked Neal if he had the same one that was still in the box that no one had played, and he was more than accommodating. Who does that? You will not find the kind of service we experienced anywhere when it comes to buying a piano; and I can tell you Anthony and Neal went 'full monty' on taking care of us and our situation. You guys at Pianowerkes made my New Year! But it does take a team to make a village, so I wanted to also give a big thanks to Adam - 'piano mover extraordinaire' and his two men team who got me my piano in record time before Christmas. THEY worked so hard to make sure that customers were able to get their piano's before Christmas, moving pianos not only in the cold, but across state lines. Now you tell me... if you were to purchase a piano, wouldn't you want to experience the stellar customer service we had? Or take your chances somewhere else....

And he still charged me. After waiting 40 minutes for him at the delivery spot he realized he could not get it in theturn of the porch, and had no ambition to dissemble anything or problem solve much. I had him take my mothers piano to value village as a donation because I was running very late at that point for another appointment. Then he told me it would still be over $300. My suggestion to him is to not snap at his female co-worker in front of clients, and that if he hears a floor scratching to stop after 1 foot instead of 10. I considered not paying him or asking for a reduced rate but I am not the heckling type, esp. considering that it was my recently deceased mothers piano. Which he knew. I believe he should have offered something in exchange for all the mistakes. Later a couple of my friends went and got the piano from value village, and took it home in their toyota pickup. the porch rail came off with a couple screws. cest la vie.

I chose the less expensive option, thinking it would actually be better for the van's balance if there were two instruments, rather than just one 1,200 pound instrument. Then Linda, the office manager, told me they would not ship my piano with another due to the high value, so I was obligated to go for the $6,000 solo move. When the van arrived, my property manager took a photo clearly showing a second instrument inside. I then told Linda I would pay the $3,500 they asked for since my piano was not shipped alone. At that point, she made up a story that they put another piano in the van at my insistence and they still expected to be paid $6,000. This is an age-old tactic known as bait and switch. Get the client to sign up for the more expensive option, then deliver the lower quality option. Now I'm dealing with a hysterical office manager threatening to sue me. If this sounds like fun to you, don't hesitate to call Expert for your next piano move.
