Now, I am a lover of all things Comic booky, board gamey and generally a bit geektastic (if you…read moredidn't already know that). A trip to Forbidden Planet is a pretty rare occasion for me as I know my wallet will be angry at me every time I even begin to look at the dusty shelves filled with pretties... I popped in yesterday for the first time in a while. I got a £10 gift voucher for my birthday and desperately want a copy of "Takenoko" after playing it for the first time at SciFi Weekender in Wales (it's a board game where you have to grow bamboo - much more fun than it sounds). After the distributor telling me that Forbidden Planet could easily order this in for me, I hastily nipped down on my lunch to enquire about this. Now, service has always been mixed at this branch of Forbidden Planet. The staff are very informed about their products, but sometimes it can seem a little Elitist. The gent which served me yesterday was friendly and helpful, but seemed a little put out that I wanted to order something in and wasn't sure he could. Needless to say, I have given them my details - so will have to update the review later if it can be achieved and the transaction completed. The product range in this store is pretty vast. Stocking everything from themed boardgames (they stock "Adventuretime" Monopoly!) to Graphic Novels and various merch (again, a huge range featuring a selection from "Twilight" to "Minecraft"); you will normally find your particular kink catered too. We are lucky to have Nostalgia and Forbidden Planet in quite close proximity. If you can't find what you are looking for in one, you can always pop down and try the other! This place really is an "Aladdin's Cave" of geeky treasures.

From the moment I queued what seemed like a mile around the corner to meet Amber Benson aka Tara…read morefrom 'Buffy' (yes, this is how positively cool I am), I was in love with Forbidden Planet in Birmingham. A haven for all those grown-up boys and girls who still find pleasure in playing with toys and secretly wish they were superheroes, the store in Birmingham is a little out of the way from the main shopping drag - but that has kept its inherent charm intact. If you fancy checking out the latest comic book issues and memorabilia, this has always been the #1 destination in the city. It's not massive and it feels a bit like a cave in there thanks to the dingy light, but again this helps set the scene for what should be a bit of a secret geek den. The staff are always helpful and clued-in (a must for any place like this, where the customers are sure to come loaded with really specific questions) and, for a pretty small space, there's so much to see and wish you could afford to take home with you that you could spend a good hour in there just having a nose.

An absolutely fantastic comic shop, fulfilling all your geeky needs. A brilliant collection of…read moreserial style comics and collected graphic novels, staff members who are helpfull and pretty much always know what on earth you're on about. With everything from your Marvels and DCs to your Indie faves and web comic releases they have it all. Most importantly of all there is an excellent selection of Neil Gaiman stuff and quite regularly art based things by Dave McKean. A must visit for any self respecting fan of comics and geek goods. (I also recommend joining their mailing list for monthly updates on new releases, which features reviews of all the best titles coming out or being re-released/re-packaged.)

After previously coming into the shop the day before with my autistic son to buy two books we went…read moreback to get another book in the series. We went in and I had two drinks in a cup holder. I wasn't drinking them and was standing at the door so my son could buy his book. To my horror I was ordered out as no drinks allowed. I'm not stupid, I appreciate that no drinks should be allowed near the books (which is why I stood at the door). The fact was, the man was rude and extremely patronising to say the least! I informed him I hadn't seen a sign on the door saying no food or drink to which he responded "there's no sign saying don't put your hands in an electrical socket". OMG so so rude!!! My son was extremely confused and upset. Needless to say I shall not be going in the shop again. Common manners and curtesy goes a long way!!!!!!

So my friend is a huge Batman fan, everything Batman. He heard about the new Arkham game coming out…read moreand that Game Store is having a lockdown event a week before the release to get your hands on and pre-order. I'm a huge Superman fan and honestly there isn't a good superman game ( come on WB ) Anyway he signs me up to this event to go with him. It was on a Sunday evening after the Stores had closed. We went it after showing the text invite to the event and in to play the game. If you pre-order the game there, you get free t-shirt of the game and some other goodies in a bag. My friend had already pre-ordered weeks before but he showed the receipt and they gave him the t-shirt, was a large size but he didn't care :). There were people from the WB who have or had something to do with the game, I forgot. As we were taking turns playing the game they had ordered drinks and pizza for us. Big thumbs up, I didn't expect that. We had planned to go eat after the event, so got to save up. My friend seemed to be having a great time, he finished the demo and started again exploring different places, I was occupied with free food and drinks I didn't mind him taking his time :D. I got to speak to other people who were waiting for their turns, talking (arguing) about comics and superheroes. I had a great time at the event and GAME did a great job making sure we were all having a great time. There was even a guy dressed as Tim Burton's batman. :)
