Nostalgia and Comics has been in Birmingham longer than I can remember. Even the Batman Returns and T:2 massive posters have been there since release. On my visit today it was bursting to the seems with Star Trek, Doctor Who and Lego merchandise with tee's, Models, Comics, Books Mugs and Posters. Its always had a mezzanine balcony and currently this is home to Back Issues. I felt guilty for not buying anything and just having a look around. read more

Great comic store, located next to the Beetham Tower/Radisson Blu. It's fairly large store with upstairs section. You don't have to be comic lover to visit, they do sell posters, collectibles, action figures and more items. I come here often to get me some Superman issues and maybe look around for some collectibles or cool stuff. read more

Comic Book Geek heaven! An institution in Birmingham for as long as I can remember, Nostalgia & Comics offers friendly staff and a massive collection of new and old comics to browse through. They also have a huge selection of graphic novels, toys and posters covering movies, cartoons and more. Let's just put it out there: I'm a geek. I may never have seen 'Star Wars' but I'm still a super grade-A geek who would, most of the time, rather be spending any shopping Saturday in Brum hunched over a shelf of graphic novels, memorabilia and, yes, TOYS than getting suited and booted in the Mailbox. A mainstay in Birmingham since 1977 (which makes it the second oldest comic book shop in the UK, dontchaknow?!), Nostalgia & Comics was overtaken by Forbidden Planet in the 90s and not long ago got a bit of a makeover. Anyone who's visited the Forbidden Planet shop over by Dale End should know what to expect then: lots in the way of geeky but great things you don't need, but really really want anyway. Last time I was there, I came away with a Scott Pilgrim tee and a Tim Burton art book, the latter alone costing a whopping £50-plus. So yes, given the collector's nature of much of the stock, you can expect to part with your hard-earned dollar too - but IMO, it's more than worth the thrill of finding the next addition to your bookshelf or DVD collection. read more

Birmingham is a great place to be as a Geek. Between Conventions, Anime/Cosplay events and Comic shops; we have everything a discerning fanboy or fangirl could want to complete their selected collections. A big part of the geek scene in Birmingham is Nostalgia. I believe this shop may have originally been 100% independent, but is now part of the Forbidden planet chain. I found out this little impressive nugget of information today, "Nostalgia & Comics in Birmingham is one of the UK's original comic shops, started in 1977, which makes it the second oldest in the UK (The SciFi Bookshop, now Forbidden Planet, Edinburgh, started life in 1975." Neatly split into graphic novels by genre, publisher and name; they are more than likely going to have what you are looking for if you stop by. If they don't, they will order in for you. As an additional note, if you are a regular customer, you can snag a "drawer" (where the staff will put aside comics that you collect as they come in). They also have an incredibly varied "single copy" section. Desperately looking for that one back issue of "Batman the Detective" that you're missing? Got time to root through some boxes to find it? Go and try Nostalgia. Aside from much comic and graphic novel geekery, they also have a very generous selection of memorabilia. From Shirts to figurines to limited edition collectables, you are going to find that "hard to buy for" person the perfect gift in no time at Nostalgia. As a side note, their selection of Tim Burton collectables is great (especially if the majority of your friends are goths). Obviously the prices vary per item, but they do have great sales and clearance sections. You will find something fantastic on any budget. If you have the time and inclination to enter this wonderland and explore, I urge you to give it a go. read more

Nostalgia is the best (and really the only) smaller, more intimate comic book/sci fi paraphernalia/everything geeky you can't find anywhere else shop in Birmingham. If you've ever wondered if Gaius was imagining Six, if the Firefly crew were going to snap and kill River, if Captain America was really dead, or if Frank Miller did the right thing for the Dark Knight, this is the shop for you. If you're a true aficianado, you'll be pleased with some of the offerings here. While it's no First Edition, it does have a good stock of graphic novels and proper old comic books. They've also got some great merchandise from every sci fi movie that made a box office hit, including stuff to satisfy all you Trekkies, stuff from Watchmen, and all the basic gadgets, mugs, lightsabers and Superman pants you could desire. The staff are REALLY helpful, and not at all geekier-than-thou the way most hole-in-the-wall geek fiefdom shops can be. Nostalgia is a great mix between huge commercial places and small, grubby places. Located right between New Street Station/The Bullring and The Queensway, it's a great, central location to pop in for the 40-year-old-virgin in your life. read more

Nostalgia & Comics is, to me, what a comic shop should be all about: boxes and boxes of comics from every era piled in one corner, the very latest issues of modern favourites adorning one huge wall, and shelf upon shelf of graphic novels stretching across the entire length of the shop. The staff are friendly enough, and knowledgeable about all the items they stock. Many's he time I've brought my items to the till only to have the person serving strike up a conversation about how much they like that particular book, and have I read this, and I would definitely like that. For me, that's something that gives Nostalgia an edge over any of its competitors. Even though they are owned by Forbidden Planet, Nostalgia retains an individuality and character lacking from the more sanitised, homogenised comic store chains. The place has scaled down in recent years, losing its once extensive manga section and giving up some of the comics real estate as a result of the ever-increasing demand for action figures and cinema tie-in merchandise. It's not ideal, but it's what brings in the cash to keep places like this open so I can't really complain. Nostalgia is one of those 'best in class' shops that if you're into what they sell, you'd be foolish to shop anywhere else in town. read more

I have to admit that I have never really been a comic book fanatic as such, but I can appreciate that to many people it is an obsession and to many businesses it equals cash. Nostalgia and Comics is situated a short walk away from New Street station so if comics is your thing, then even a flying visit to Brum can encompass this store! I have to say that I was impressed with what I found inside; the selection was huge and not just in terms of comic books. There was also a large range of figurines, collectables and all manner of novelty items from Star Wars to Super Heroes. You can also exchange or sell your old comic books here which I thought was a good interactive touch and may just throw up the odd gem for collectors. To my disappointment the life size Homer Simpson cut out in the window didn't appear to be for sale, but as that was my only complaint, these guys must be doing something right! read more

Nostalgia and Comics has been my comic store since I learned to read as a small boy thanks to Stan Lee and the exploits of The Amazing Spider-man. It is one of the oldest comic and memorabilia stores in the UK and, in my opinion, easily one of the best. It's a big store, one of this size would normally be struggling to fill it's space but Nostalgia is rammed with stock. The Nostalgia side has kind of taken over the comics side lately, with much more in the way of collectibles, toys and merchandise but the comics are still there and they are definitely more prominent than in most other Forbidden Planet stores. Whenever friends bands from across the pond would come to town to play shows, they would always want to visit The Plastic Factory (sadly closed down record store) and Nostalgia and Comics... it really is an internationally famous store that Birmingham can be proud of! read more

Nostalgia & Comics was the top dog in the comic/memorabilia field before Forbidden Planet came to town, and it's still holding its own. A large shop that can be difficult to navigate around when there are many comics readers who treat is as a library. All your favourite TV and film toys here, prices are steep but considering you won't find many of the items at the usual high street stores (though do check), often you'll have no other choice other than pay these prices or buy online. read more

It may betray the state of geek merchandise today, with the wall-to-wall imported toys - in the huge ground floor - now outweighing the funny books promised by the store's name. But Nossie still has a comics shop for a soul; its commitment to old skool back issues showing it to be as nostalgic for its former self as shoppers searching for their past. Whether a hardcore fanboy or someone acquainted only casually with transforming cars, each shopper is equally at home. That's because browsing here is entertainment in itself, whether you're buying or not. But be warned, be prepared to open your wallet when taking a saucer-eyed kid or someone who still has a complex because they never got the Millennium Falcon when their friends did.
