Great food and meal, just lacking service with a smile and ambience. Ever walk into a place and feel like you might be better off turning right around and leaving? That's how I felt when we walked in and were barely greeted by the waitress. It was 8:30 pm Friday and the restaurant doesn't close until 10, but it felt like we were entering at 9:55 pm. There were 3 other tables with a grand total of 7 people, so I'm not sure why the staff was so unwelcoming. The waitress quickly took our orders and delivered our soups, salads and (1.50 each) hot tea. I thought this used to be free of charge, but times change...Next the single sushi roll came out and the Tuna was amazing. Next the chef came out to the hibachi where we were seated alone and began to prepare our entrees. That's all he did. No flash, no jokes, no smiles, nothing. LAME!!! Usually the hibachi is fun and entertaining. Not this time. We should've just sat at a regular table since we received no pleasure from watching a bored chef prepare food as if he were in the back making the food for a take out order. Aside from not being entertained, the Hibachi Steak and Hibachi Salmon were cooked perfectly and delicious. I suppose I should be glad it wasn't the other way around since delicious food made me feel better than being entertained while eating lousy food. I used my 25% Entertainment Card discount for $11.75 off the bill, so that was good. Will I be back? Maybe. Just not after 7 pm... read more

Service was great, food was really good- the atmosphere is a little lacking, but a definite improvement from before it burned down a few years ago. The great news is they're FINALLY open for dine- in since the virus devastated the country's restaurant business. i think it's still only open a couple days a week for dine in- mostly still for take out or delivery only. The food was beautiful to look at, and just as tasty. My only criticism is I wish the restaurant FELT a little more open (put boxes away, make the entrance to the eating area a little wider, put cleaning products away and off the tables, put soap in the dispenser instead of a tub next to the sink). the people who work here are really great people, very friendly- i watched them handle a tough customer tonight- i was afraid they were doing a dine and dash- wow! The Tuna tataki was also for pepper lovers- definitely cleared out my sinuses! Otherwise nothing else was too overwhelming as far as flavor goes. Enjoy the pictures! read more

I know it's too soon to judge and I am staying hopeful, but this place really has shocked me. Why? Because it's down the street from my home and the sushi quality was really good....I know everyone raves about Miso in the area and it's other sister stores but the last two experiences I've had here have been impressive. Impressive enough that I might just start buying sushi here since it's down the street. Now it does look a bit divey and it is in a strip mall across all the medical centers. I have also heard several people say it's hit or miss. So far I am thinking thursday and fridays are good sushi days and maybe even the weekends? I need to test the weekend theory though. Parking is a little sparse but doable and it seems like they are family and kid friendly since during my lunch time we had little ones running rampant. They do only have 2 bathrooms so ...if there's a lot of families expect a wait. They also have an option to order online which I tested and was successful for dinner takeout. They were super quick with my to go order in less than 15 minutes. Service during lunch was very attentive since its slow. Make sure to ask about the lunch menu. As soon as you sit down, they give you this freaking lovely fresh cucumber salad. We had several rolls for lunch. I highly recommend their jungle roll with whole scallops (better than Miso's)?! I thought the volcano roll here was underwhelming. Their Pink and Orange Flamingo rolls are smaller than Miso's but it seems like there's more of them and slightly cheaper. These rolls took the prize for me. I also had the tuna and smoked salmon sashimi which tasted extremely fresh and delicious as well. Bottom line, I was impressed with the quality and freshness of fish/sushi I got. Now....for takeout I got the Chirashi dinner which is on the pricey side for 18 bucks. BUT for 15 pieces of sushi and I lucked out since i think they didn't have cucumber salad and gave me 2 pieces of egg and more seaweed along with their soup? I think it was totally worth it and again fish was fresh. I definitely will be back. read more

First time in a long time since we've been. Unfortunately, won't be going back. Rolls where substandard and service was just as bad. Wasn't server's fault, restaurant was completely understaffed. And with the above in consideration, it was overpriced. And I hate to write a bad review, but if you're reading this, be forewarned. read more

This was the worst sushi I've ever had. We couldn't even eat it and had to throw it in the trash. It was literally hot when we received it. Soup was cold. Not to mention that it was overpriced to begin with. I do not recommend this place when there are so many other better places! read more

I've been here many times, but finally decided to leave a review. The staff here is so friendly and the ambiance is relaxing. You have your choice of hibachi or sushi. The hibachi chefs really put on a good show and their skill is amazing. The sushi menu is extensive and they have lots of raw and cooked rolls to choose from. As soon as you are seated, they bring out a cucumber salad. It's so refreshing with a mild & sweet vinegar dressing. This visit I had the volcano, smoked salmon with cream cheese, and the shrimp tempura with eel & avocado rolls. All three were delicious. The quality of the fish is great and the sushi chef rolls them well. I've never had one fall apart on me here. It's not byob, but they have a good drink list. This is one of my favorite sushi places in the area. read more

This is the best bang for your buck of all hibachi locations. The cooks are fun and the food is delicious! It's a tradition that we go here when my brother in law's mother is in town. She is a fan and they are always so nice and they remember her. That's a good touch. This location is cozy and intimate. The place is updated and clean. They are also very considerate when you have kids with you while you order hibachi. My nephew is known by the cooks here. They always make him a little plate with rice and veggies and meat cut up in small pieces. I think this is very nice of them. Sushi is always delicious there and they have a menu board outside with their specials! They always have coupons so keep an eye out! read more

Walking up to the place looks out of the ordinary in a suburban neighborhood. That was the first red flag. Upon entering the place, it seemed morbid and uninviting. It had the dank smell of cheap beer that had been left to sit under the bar floor. So I get seated pretty fast, no complaints there. I asked for hot tea. The young lady brought back ice water. Second strike. So I am somewhat of a amateur approaching intermediate when it comes to sushi and sashimi. So I ask her any suggestions. She sighs deeply and waves her hand at me in a very disrespectful way. Maybe it was a long day for her. But bad customer service is essential for the life of a restaurant buisness, in fact any business where people are paying there hard earned money in a very strained economy. I politely got up and walked out. Go we're your celebrated, not tolerated! read more

We feel like this is our second home. The staff is great with minimal turnover, so it's easy to get to know them. A recent renovation of the place has been completed and it's looking much better and open inside. I dare say that there is no wrong choice of food here. Both the hibachi and sushi are very good. read more

It's an okay place. It's not spectacular but it isn't horrible. The service is a little slow. You pay for what you get at this place.

I have been going to this place since 1999, it has excellent food. They have great sushi and hibachi and they really put on a show when you order and sit down at the hibachi table. The thing i like the best is when the chef takes the onion, cuts it up, flips it over and builds kinda liek a volcano, puts whatever, wine in it and lights it on fire. They also play around, like with the small water bottle what's shaped like a football player, that "pees" water on the grill to clean it. They regularly advertise in the Clipper Magazine and in the Patriot-News for 15% off entire check, so its definately worth it. The people are very nice and courteous. One of their waitresses has been working there for like almost a decade. We use the all you can eat sushi special, so it really is worth it. "The royal club" which is only 23.95 per person but its all you can eat, with the exception of lobster and a few smaller items such as edamame and spider roll. and you just get at least 5 TNT rolls and its worth it. Ricky, Pink Flamingo, Orange Flamingo, Wang's you name it, black dragon, their rolls are fresh and tasty! The sushi man himself is very polite, and always talks to my mother-in-law (also chinese) very respectfully. They usually start you off with a small cucumber & crab dish, a hot towel and if you order hibachi or from the menu you get onion or miso soup. They also have a selection of wine and alcohol, before that they had BYOB. I have only had stuff once there. You can order domestic, imports or japanese beer. If you look at my photo uploads they had a free all you can eat invitation event on christmas one year, it was for all the royal club members, it turned out to be really decent, all the parking spots were full, and there was literally no room left, we waited in the corner for awhile till a table opened up and finally got to sit down. cant go wrong with free sushi! regarding the layout / landscaping = this used to be a 7-11 conevience store back in the day, it closed down and was vacant for a number of years, it has been the Tokyo Diner for at least 10 years, since 1998 or longer. The other relatives of this guy have since opened up their own branches in York, Mechanicsburg, Hershey and Selinsgrove. It is right behind Lowe's & the BP gas station in Union Deposit, and right now it actually looks good compared to before. The reason it's like that now is because they added booths, and moved the enterance down a door, it actually is 2 addresses, one building. the Ancient China Tea Bistro is also owned by them, it was to be branded as another business, and they had a grand opening, but I think not that many people understood / knew it was there, so it eventually closed (it was basically the same building, same kitchen, same workers.) but it really was nicely laid out and done up, with new fixtures & equipment and a huge tv, and shelves. Also: they have toys and stuffed animals all over there, they werent always like that, its since 2005. but I remember at that party they gave everyone for free. I dont know if they're for sale or decoration. read more

11/13/08 6pm (3rd update) Went back for AYCE. My last review holds true, the sushi chef talked in a foreign language over my head to another employee behind me again. I am a logtime fan of Tokyo Diner. The sushi is very good (though not great). The hibachi is excellent (with minimal theatrics... thank goodness... yeah catching a shrimp in your pocket was cool five years ago... now it just seems like a blatant health code violation). The service is a bit lacking. Below average at best. The decor is... well... bordering on scary. As so often is the case of the best ethnic restaurants it ain t much to look at but the food is excellent. The service and appearance though are easy to overlook given the quality and consistency of the food. I highly recommend the Harrisburg or Mechanicsburg location. read more

Long story short: Having enjoyed sushi from New York to Buenos Aires, and London to Costa Rica, this little joint in Harrisburg PA really is as good as you'll find anywhere, no joke. Granted, when you pull into the (usually empty) parking lot, apprehension is forgivable. It's a converted convinience store, and it looks like it. The interior is passable, but that's it. But I honestly don't go to a sushi restaurant for the decor, I go for the fish. and what fish it is! First off, if you haven't gone in the past few months, you're missing out. They've hired a new chef (straight from New York, which is about as good a credential as you can have as a sushi chef anymore) and definitely upgraded their quality of ingredients. I've always enjoyed the fish there, but it's on a whole new level now for sure. This place is exactly what you want when getting sushi: Excellent quality, reasonable (for sushi) price, and FAST service. Personal favorites of mine include the orange flamingo, TNT, and jungle roll, as well as the green mussels appetizer. They've had oysters too recently, which are also excellent. It definitely pays to be a regular. One, their special board changes regularly, and there always seems to be a least one that catches my eye each time. Second, the aforementioned new chef is very personable if you let him, and will sometimes suggest his own creations once he gets a feel for what you enjoy. Best example of this is his "sushi pizza". I kid you not. It's not on the menu, but he suggested it one time and I figured what the hell. Solid life decision. Anytime I have friends or family in town that like sushi, I bring them here and they're always blown away. I've also made plenty of new fishheads by bringing them here. Explore the menu, come a few times so the staff know who you are and what you like, and I guarantee you'll be glad you made the trip. read more

Pretty good sushi. Service was typical... Servers English wasn't good but hey what can one expect when going to Tokyo diner. Overall good experience. Still think I prefer Okini because you save money with byob. Free cucumber salad if you eat there. Okini gives free edamamies which personally I prefer. Used a 15% off coupon from coupon clipper. You do get 8 pieces of sushi vs okinis 6. Prices were very reasonable. Would go again.... If Okini was closed read more

Overall a pretty good place. The location is awful. It is literally right behind lowes. The decor and restaurant itself is kinda lacking, it needs to be renovated and updated. Would be nice to see the windows not covered like its boarded up. The heat didn't seem like it was really on, they had a freestanding heater to supplement. One thing that was cool were the sliding doors for the private rooms which were elevated from the rest of the restaurant. Seems like they used those for bigger groups. The food however was very nice. Hibachi steak was very moist and tasty. I loved the flavoring they used. The hibachi chicken on the other hand was a bit bland. Portions were much much larger than other hibachi restaurants like Benihana and Sapporo East though, which is a plus especially since it is pretty reasonably priced. $11.95 for Hibachi Chicken and $13.95 for Hibachi Steak-- not bad. The combinations were $15.95. The sushi was excellent too. The service was friendly and they are great with kids. If they has a nicer place and decor/plateware and more heat I would have given it 5*'s. UPDATE: I've been back many times since my review and have been less impressed with each return. The hibachi while still ok, is not as good as I remembered the first time I had it. The vegetables seemed way overcooked and the chicken not as fresh. I still don't like the unkept feel of the place which makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like. For take out, the older lady is always unpleasant and gruff even though we would order pretty regularly and she knows my face. The sushi which my wife still gets has been varying from great to subpar, when before it was excellent. I'm knocking down to two stars for the timebeing. read more

Dined-in midday on a Saturday in late 2012, before the fire. Mostly empty. Caveat: Not one for special rolls; tend to stick to the "neat" stuff. The good: Prompt, polite service. The bad: Mediocre maki (roll) sushi. Small, not flavorful. The ugly: Surprise charge for green tea. Usually complimentary. Errata: Companion noted all-you-can-eat is $27.95, up $3. Entryway sign touts complimentary beer or sake; not offered. read more

Great food and awesome deals! My friends discovered this place after going to the same restaurant, but in Mechanicsburg. They have a really good deal for the all-you-can-eat-sushi. I think it's definitely worth the $25 dollars. And what i like about it, is that the sushi rolls you order are made to order. Their hibachi is amazing too! I had their steak hibachi and the steaks they used were tender and absolutely scrumptious! The owners/ employees there, so far for the past 2 times I've been there haven't been too friendly, it might be because I've gone with my college friends and we gave off the vibe that we were going to eat everything. (which I don't blame them, we probably could ;) ) So i would take half a star for that. read more

I've experienced a ton better.. what happened to this place? Its been 5 years since I have been here, not only has the remodel changed.. service was pretty bad, not once did she refill our water. also i expected the complimentary cucumber salad, did not get it, for as long as i remember you get it if you eat here. sushi roll were not rolled tightly, falling apart with every time I picked a piece up. the fish didnt taste as fresh as i am used to, i didnt even eat all my leftover they next day, had to trash it. we dropped $80 here on a dinner for 4, very poor quality & NOT worth it. very sad to say it, as i used to be a Tokyo Diner Member for a discount since i was a regular. Okay.. I love me some sushi. I keep Tokyo Diner on the back burner once a week of the grand ol' ALL YOU CAN EAT membership. As far as sushi goes its not bad. I tend to go for plates and plates of salmon and tuna nigiri. As far as rolls go.. well it could be alot better. They sometimes fall apart and the minced spicy fish is not the best quality. Its the all you can eat that brings me back because I love nigiri and can pile it up high with my membership. As for hibachi it isn't bad, I ask for white rice because fried rice over seasoned kind of no longer makes the hibachi a light meal. They are more than happy to sub. The AYCE or Tokyo Diner membership is $10 a year, you head to your favorite TD (except the hershey branch) and ask for a membership. Well the food came out for us and we found hair in it. Personally I can overlook that, but my wife refused to eat the sushi. We sent it back and to their credit the dish was replaced gratis. But if you've got an issue with hair in your food it's probably better to skip Tokyo Diner. The sushi was actually kind of decent but their chicken tempura actually made me physically sick. It had to have bee the greasiest dish I've had - ever. I mean there's enough grease to collect for a small candle. I laughed because they offer white meat chicken fried and spoiled by grease. Why bother with the white meat at all? Why not feed us thigh meat and go all out??? Anyways I wasn't impressed. read more

If there was an option for 0 stars, I would rate this restaurant worth NOTHING. They take reservations but that means nothing. It took over a half hour just for drinks to be ordered. In an old seven eleven store and could use a face lift, the sushi is good, but six out of eight had sushi and you got some of your order where one roll was what you ordered, the other no one ordered. It was an all you can eat so you took what they brought and one in the group couldn't get the waitress to take his order sheet and he got very little of what he ordered when he got anything.
